Many yearsago, my youngest son told me that the way you could tell if a snake was poisonous was by the shape of their scales. This was after his father killed a 5 ft Go copperhead behind the house. Good Golly Ms Molly! As if I was going to get close enough to a copperhead or any other snake to access the shape of their scales! My motto is a good snake is a dead snake. Then, after they're good and dead, I'll check out the size and shape of their scales.

Sooooo... I guess you would not get close enough do this.
In North America, the pupils of a venomous snake are in the shape of a slit.... Non-venomous snakes have round pupils. Examples below...

And most of the time you can tell by the shape of their head. Rounded head = Venomous. Long, pointed head = Non venomous. There may be some exceptions lol but most of the time it holds true.
