At speed it is about 50% of the time he gets his booty under him and works and the other half he will throw up his head, hollow his back and loose his lead. So that's why we are doing the slow work to try to get him to consistently turn correct but I am failing at doing that....

There are a few things that give me some clues about your horse... and you. One thing is that he hasn't figured out he is a barrel horse yet. If you are having to snatch him at the barrel then he's not rating and turning on his own. That is the first thing you need to fix. These horses need to be on their honor on the pattern and we need to just stay out of the way and let them do their job. OUR job is to get them to that point so that they can be confident in and out of the arena.

So what would you advise for getting from where we are now to him choosing to turn correct most of the time with out me having to snach him? Or do I just need to trust him?
I'm am trying to get a video up as we speak**

Honestly... It's a "feel" thing. You need to make sure that he is relaxed and responsive away from the barrels first. He sounds like he needs "bitting up" so he can figure a few things out on his own. Once that is done he needs some speed control exercises. Then, when he is responding correctly there, you can begin barrel work... not pattern work... there's a difference. Use one barrel, collect him up and he should be able to lope around that barrel, in a quiet relaxed manner at least three times (close to the barrel) before you start pattern work.

I didn't read the whole post so apologies if I repeat someone. I had similar trouble a few years ago. Check how your riding on and off the pattern. I was riding so calm and relaxed at home, never in his face, then when I went to a barrel race I only rode his face and he hated it. When your riding around off the pattern maybe you use your body and never the bit and once your on the pattern you using your bit alot and he's not used to it.

Just an idea, what if you set up a different type of barrel pattern. Something where you are aimed at a barrel but he doesnt necessarily know what he is doing. See if he respects you then. If he stops nice in all your slow work then I tend to think hes being a bit of a hot head in the barrel pattern. Maybe he needs some pattern/barrel work without actually doing a barrel pattern. Get him lisening again.

And maybe I missed it and I believe you said youve tried multiple things but my gelding only like dog bone mouth peices, he becomes a real jerk without one.

I did not get a video because I followed your advice and it helped ALOT.
I bitted nim up in the round pen and let him figure it out. He had a couple angry bucks, liced his lips and worked nice. So I set up the one barrel in the middle (he does this 3xrerce alot and he gets mad if he is doing the pattern or a random barrel the same) but to dau I trotted up to it held my hands and instead of getting mad and tossing his head and towing a fit he just locked and chewed! So I tryed it at a lope and dame result. So I set up the pattern and lope go the first and I got a NICE stop RELAXED. I could not be happier. I will keep yall updated.
Thank you
