R Bar B sells the Equilix tubs - I believe they have a smaller 25 and the 50 lb tubs. They also have FORCO and several other supplements. | |

I have had mixed feelings about a tub for everyday use for horses that are kept up. I didn't want them put in stalls where they would be in the way. We have worked for two years on this project at the Twissleman Ranch in California and are just finishing testing up at Potter Ranch with some of Sherry's horses.
I would be scared it the horses are kept up that they will lick it out of boredom. But it might just work in the pasture. Please keep us updated!  | |

Yes, turn out tubs are not designed for use where a horse is kept in a stall. But,There are many horses that are kept out on large acreage that have nothing but what they stand on to eat. In some cases this may be enough, in some cases not. Where it is not, a tub that provides an overall nutritional boost can be appropriate. Consumption can be adjusted by both formulation and by how far the tubs are placed from the water source. We were looking for 3/4 pound to 1 pound per day per head. It took a while to hit that consistently, but in the end we found that it is possible. Changes in pasture quality effect consumption, as do weather and herd size. | |

I would be interested in this product when it becomes available. I would most be interested in cost. As you are talking turned out horses that need help nutritionally, without adding labor cost of feeding, I am assuming broodmare bands are the largest target group. Feed costs are very important to this group, so I would be very interested in cost to use and feed. Thanks. | |

| I used the equilix tubs in a corral. They didn't over consume them. There's no molasses in them. They licked as needed. I quit using because of cost and I don't know if there is too much selenium in my forage for the tub. | |

Oh I agree it will depend on a lot of different things if they work or not.
But just the fact that it will be an option is exciting!

As you would imagine, the pricing on this is all about how they are distributed. This is not a typical distributor to feed store item because of freight costs. We are trying to get them to Texas and out to broodmare bands at a delivered price that is practical. More information to follow as we work on a unique distribution arrangement. I did not intend to steal this thread. There is a lot to the idea of what a nutritional tub can or should be. During the California drought we had a pretty unique chance to see what broader spectrum nutritional support in a 125 pound tub could do compared to just providing a vitamin and mineral package. We conditioned all 50 colts used for the Horsemans ReUnion event last year on these tubs while the drought was in full swing. The result was all we could ever ask for. A product like this has an application for horses on questionable quality turn out that could not easily be supplemented in another way. With better forage available you might get along fine with just a Vitamin / Mineral formula, and there are a number of options to do that. | |
