Location: Middle TN | Willa is very sore today but enjoyed her bath last night. When her wounds heal up better, I will have to probably cut some of the burrs out of her fur, I didn't even realize how bad and how many of them she had gotten until her bath. I was able to get several out with the water and soap but a lot of them just are not coming out without getting cut out :( She had to have been running from something to have gotten so many burrs :(
We have come across a new possibility for the puncture wounds. We got word that someone in the area has been putting out "dirt traps" to capture coyotes and I guess other types of wildlife. These traps are holes dug a few feet-several feet deep with stakes of some sort placed to inflict injury to wound or possibly kill the animal that gets trapped. I'm not sure that this is legal, and I have contacted our local wildlife agency in regards to this, as the traps have been placed on government land and more than likely on private property as well.
All I can think now is what if someone, or myself came up on something like this while riding our horses, or even just going for a walk? This is absolutely terrifying. |

I'm always amazed at the cruelty some people can inflict. . . So glad Willa is feeling better, and kudos to you for getting officials involved. |

Location: Somewhere between raising hell and Amazing Grace | Yes, it does sound like a dog fight. I witnessed the neighbors 5 dogs attack one of my Aussies several years ago. Had it not been for my mastiff breaking it up who knows what would have happened. He had puncture wounds all over, chest, belly, back, rump. And they did not appear like bites as they were each a single puncture. But obviously I knew they were. We ended up having to put drains in and he healed great. But he was HORRIBLY body sore for a few days.
I bet she got jumped by several dogs, possibly even coyotes. Is she current on rabies? Tetanus?
Prayers for a speedy recovery!!! |

Hoping she heals quickly, what a pretty girl she is! I am very hopeful that this is the result of a trap or another animal and not a person.

I will add that I have a dog that goes for the stomache. I had one witch of a dog. She would start fights for nothing. Well she jumped my sister's heeler mix one day, that poor dog didn't have a mean bone in her body and didn't have a chance. My male jumped in and went for the stomach and ripped her up pretty good before we could get in the yard and get it stopped. It never fails, if 2 dogs are fighting he is going for the gut of the dog that is losing. It doesn't matter if the losing dog is his buddy or not, he is going to cheap shot them. The heeler's marks on her stomach didn't look like bite marks either. Just a long laceration and some punctures. Not sure what it would have looked like if we hadn't stopped it. |

Thank you for the input! We did find some more smaller holes that do look much more like tooth marks on her rump and back. She seems to be doing much better each day, still very sore & pitiful. |

Wow! They sound like my mom's dogs. She has a female coyote mix that is now too old, but has trained all of the pups through the years to hunt, but also keep ANY outside dogs away. My little sisters pit bull has gone after Willa several time, but ALWAYS goes for the throat; She intends to kill and Willa is SOOO submissive.. We do have occasional strays and several strays actually run with the coyotes in the area, so it is extremely possible that she got mixed up with some mean wild dogs. I'm just so grateful that she survived and was able to get home so we could get her the care she needed! |

| Oh no, I am so sorry. Our yorkie-poo survived a coyote attack. We moved her to a specialty clinic, many $$ later she survived. Prayers your Willa does the same. The specialty clinic did exploratory surgery to be sure her stomach was not punctured, which was not. Hope you get to visit and stay with your Willa some. |
