I might also make sure the pelvic area is not damaged. Many prayers for you and your mare.

It looks now that the joint might be septic and what we thought was her rubbing was actually an abcessing blowing out of the joint. She was pretty sick when I did chores and doctored her tonight. Pretty big turn for the worse :( I got penicillin into her tonight and she's headed back to doctor first thing in the morning.

Unfortunately everything thawed and rained overnight and our barn is down at the bottom of a very steep hill that is the only access. I gave her penicillin last night and she was starting to drink a little and pick at food. This morning I gave her more Pen, and through the night she had drank her whole big tub of water and was eating a little more enthusiastically. Vet is coming today cause she can get down there with her truck. We are starting her on gentamycin today and tummy meds. But with the slight improvement with Penicillin tells me we are on the right track with diagnosis and its septic. she comes by, we are going to talk realistic options. I hate realistic options :( I'll keep everyone posted on what happens. And yes, this is very hard. This mare was a gift to my son when he was 9 and recovering from a TBI that he got in a horse related accident. She got him not scared to ride again. She's pretty important to us.

Gets the vet to culture the joint

If it is infected, the joint should be flushed with litres upon litres of Saliane

omg I'm so sorry!! How terrible, glad there isn't any major injuries that you can tell. Whenever something goes on in my horse I start them on THE NutraWound right away. This will help with the healing process. My bf used to take it too when he worked out and he said that he didn't become nearly as sore the next day. He could lift weights mutliple days in a row without become too fatigued or sore. So I'm sure it will help with her soreness too. Poor girl praying for a speedy recovery

Prayers for your horse and I hope you are not dealing with a joint infection. I have one and it has been a long couple of weeks.
