J Cunningham - 2016-02-13 10:58 AM Not trying to be pessimistic, but the announcement doesn't say anything about NEW ground, just that Mr. Davis has asked the best grounds person HE knows to take a look and make recommendations........ hmmmm. Here's the announcement: Petition update VICTORY! Carol Harris Smithville, TX Feb 13, 2016 — Thank you all for your support of this petition. Our voices have been heard. Many people have been working for better ground at the NFR for years. The fan support helped in finally getting it done! Cindy Gillespie to WPRA - Prairie Circuit 7 hrs · From WPRA President Carolyn Carolynn Vietor The NFRC meeting in San Antonio just ended and I have great news to share with you! Shawn Davis announced today to the NFRC board of directors that he has hired the best grounds person he knows of to take on the task of improving the ground at the NFR for 2016. They have already analyzed the ground and the water and have made their recommendations. He said "The ground at the NFR will be the best that we can make it!' We are free to announce that information.
So anyone know who is the best grounds person Shawn Davis knows?  Who is this person?  Maybe he doesn't really know any good grounds person.  So the same dirt, but what if the best grounds person he knows thinks like him? LOL  Sounds like a nice politician answer. Doesn't mean the equipment used or person using it will be any different either.

Absolutely Agree!

I know that Charmaine James, volunteered to put up $50,000 to get new dirt , this was the year that Sharon rode speed money, and we all went in with 5 gallon buckets picked up rocks out of arena during practice mornings. Girls told them about covering the entrance gate with pad and dirt, speed money hit top of his foot on bottom of panel gate bruising it so bad he had to be put down after NFR
Shawn Davis, said that girls were invited guest, and didnt really care if they came or not. So NO didnt take the money offered or change the ground, it's been the same ground since, started, it's wore out and NOTHING can fix it, must have new dirt

Firewater - 2016-02-13 11:00 AM I agree too - I am a cynic - but I sure hope it is better than what it has been in the past.  Regardless, something needs to happen to improve it - I really wish Florida would have won the bid for the NFR  - I think they truly care about the grounds and the animals and would have put forth a top notch effort.

Even if Florida would have won it would be the same people working the ground.  May be different newer dirt but Shawn would have still been in charge of it since it would have still been the NFR....

Who owns the precious NFR dirt? I read Shawn Davis owns it and is paid handsomely for its use. If that's true, how is that not a conflict of interest?

Carol Harris started the petition about the dirt at the NFR so I would think that everyone that cares should send Shawn Davis an e-mail telling him that we want new ground and not the BS story of fixing the old ground.

I did start the petition and have been working with others for the change.  I don't think anyone should contact Shawn Davis at this time.  He made the public announcement that the ground would be analyzed for recommendations on fixing the problem.  HE DID NOT SAY what the recommendations were.  He very well could be planning on bringing in new dirt.  LETS GIVE THE MAN A CHANCE to do what he has said he would do.  It is a positive thing on his part that he has acknowledged the problem and has promised to do his best to fix it.  All the negativity does not help at this point.

euchee - 2016-02-14 9:12 AM  I have to wonder how much of this decision has to do with the ERA.  After all this has needed done for years and they choose now to do it.  Makes me think they are trying to make the NFR better to try and keep some of the girls from jumping ship or the ERA.  None the less I am glad that they have finally came around and seen the light that the ground sucked big time.

Has nothing to do with the ERA.

I caught that, too.  Just the cynic in me--I'm a "believe it when I see it type"!  I do hope that this does mean it WILL be better for all involved, they don't deserve any less.
I agree.....sorry to be pessimistic but he says NOTHING about "new ground".....only that it will be tested and worked....this dirt is what? 30 years old? Anybody that runs in the same arena for 30 years knows that the dirt needs to be replaced or new dirt added. I remember reading last year that, when the ground was questioned, Mr. Davis made the same claim that he had it tested and it was "fine"...... I applaud those that have worked diligently to get something done but I am not holding my breath......

Do you mean come from the same place? I know they do not leave the dirt in there year round of course. Do they take it up and store it somewhere?

You're probably right as it would just give him an excuse not to do nothing which unfortunately I feel will happen anyway. I'm going to step away from the whole thing as it's not my circus and not my monkeys.

IMO It's going to take a high dollar bull or bronc to break a leg for it to change.......mad stock contractors carry a lot bigger stick that crabbin barrel racers.  If you watched the roughstock last year there was a lot of ground issues with those critters keeping their feet under them-I actually thought there were going to be some bad wrecks because of it, but until that happens, there isn't going to be a whole lot of changes.  But when that does happen-they will rip it out mid show and fix it

Yup. My thoughts exactly.
Apparenlty horses that are top notch and priceless don't matter when they have to be put down....

But all He!! will break loose when a bull or other stock is hurt and has to be taken out or put down.
But I would bet money Shawn won't fix it then. He'll make a snarky comment like: If you don't like it I can find more stock elsewhere.... But once his snarky comments get around to the other stock contractors about how he truly does not care for the welfare of the animals competeing... Well....
It'll be hard to have a rodeo without stock.... Those guys will go on strike until somethings done. They won't go after him tho... They'll go after the PRCA as a whole.

His comments about barrel racers being invited guests really ticks me off..... I mean, maybe we need to sit one year out to get the point across....Kind of like: hey world, we care about our horses and don't want them hurt... At the same time that would be a lot of money to sit out on for a strike that most likely wouldn't work.... Ugh.... We can't win until that man gets off his high horse...

Does the WPRA contract with the PRCA to be invited guests at the NFR expire on or after 2017? That agreement resulted when the WPRA won the lawsuit against the PRCA in 2007.

I hope the grounds committee would get it where there was a tractor rake after 5 and 10.Β  I think that would help a lot to keepΒ the ground consistent for all barrel racers.Β

Β They just need to throw in a few commercials like the TV time outs in a college and NFL football games.

Please be careful when using the words "NEW GROUND".

I haven't seen those words used by the directors who have posted the news.

Those exact words never came out of Shawn's mouth.

The ERA does not affect the PRCA/NFR in barrel racing. Using ground up carpet don't think was the best idea for ground at Vegas.
