Murphy - 2016-05-16 11:38 AM I'm planning on 7 days. Here is the "direction" I'm planning:
Sept. 10th-17th
Arrive on the 10th - Salt Lake City to Yellowstone
Yellowstone to Billings/Little Bighorn
Billings/Little Big Horn to Deadwood/Mt. Rushmore
Deadwood to Rapid City – Departure on the 17th
Â
Yellowstone is 4.5 hours from Salt Lake, most of it not being very scenic.  I'd try flying into Cody or Jackson if possible.
No way!! My hometown is Bondurant, just a few minutes from Jackson. There's a gorgeous drive from Salt Lake, you just catch Hwy 89 from I15 and follow it all the way to Hwy 26 to Hoback Junction, then head into Jackson. Gorgeous drive.
You're going at the right time of year, too. The heavy crowds are gone, and it usually hasn't snowed yet. My favorite parts of Yellowstone are the mud pots and hot springs. Have fun! |

Different strokes I guess. The best thing will be that september will be peak elk rutting season. Should see some giant bulls out pushing the cows around. Be sure to take a good camera. |

Did you look into Casper, Gillette, or Idaho Falls?? |

Location: Buffalo, Wyoming | I would suggest going up I-15 to McCammon, Idaho and go up through Lava Hot Springs and through what is called Tin Cup. This route will kick you out in Freedom and Thayne, WY. That is my favorite way to get to Jackson. You will go through what I think it the pretties places in the world. |

Billings isn't too bad of a price either from SDF. |

This is amazing too! Lava Hot Springs is so cool! Love this drive. Anybody who says anywhere in this area is ugly probably hasn't ever been anywhere else... |

 Brains Behind the Operation...

Location: Arizona | I live about 30 miles from Bozeman and went to Yellowstone for the first time last summer. It is beautiful, but the tourists are a bit of a trial to deal with. It is entertaining watching & guessing who will get attacked by an animal... Lol many just have no common sense and think nothing of trying to walk right up to buffalo and elk and bears like they are in a petting zoo. We just made a day trip so didn't get to see everything. Came in through West Yellowstone and left through Gardiner. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is beautiful, as are Mammoth Hot Springs. The Hayden Valley provides excellent buffalo and elk spotting, as well as some geothermal features. Didn't make it to the geysers on that trip but would like to go back to see those. The constant stop and go traffic and road construction get old, but there is a lot to see and do. |

Location: Arizona | Definitely look into flights in Bozeman and Idaho Falls, Allegiant flies into both airports and are usually very cheap. |

Nothing near me flies into either of those cheaply. Billings or Salt Lake is my cheapest bet. |

Location: Oklahoma | There is a train that goes through the Black Hills... I remember how much fun it was. It's called the 1880 train and it's an 1880's steam train. Wonderful way to see the scenery |

Location: lost in missouri | West Yellowstone Mt is the Western Entrance to the park and is a very pretty and neat area. The wolf and bear refuge there is really neat to go thru and at night if u stay in west yellowstone u can hear the wolves howling. Crazy Horse is a must see and Needles highway is a must drive while in the Black Hills. |

Location: MT | Just a thought I had since I've ran into this problem before in my previous life when I used to travel a lot for work. Make sure your rental car company will let you drop the car off at a different location if you are planning on flying into one place and out of another. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. Might not hurt to check before you get the whole trip planned. |

I don't remember the road numbers, but I came out of Yellowstone to Jackson and went west along the Snake River into Idaho. From there you can go south to SLC and it's a nice drive. |
