I question riders who buy $100 pants/$100 t-shirt/$300 boots but don't invest in their tack, besides that I try not to judge. I like to see what professional barrel racer that rider likes to follow. Example: A young girl had every piece of Sharon Camarillo tack you could imagine on or If I see tie-dyed pants on a rider, I see if they have other Fallon Taylor stuff.

Great quality tack isn't cheap and novice barrel racers need to find what suits their needs. That could take a few seasons before making that kind of investment. My first barrel saddle was $500 and it fit every horse I threw it on.

I'll notice ill fitting or dangerous tack (a back cinch hanging low enough to catch a foot or one not connected to the front cinch) but I don't really notice whether the tack is high end or bargain based.

I will notice a blingy set or pretty set but its because I like shiny objects

This is me!! lol Im the same way.
The back cinch is the only thing that really bothers me but I usually dont say anything. And the tie down not being in something, simply because I have seen a lot of wrecks involving tie downs. Simple fix: rubber band.

And what is wrong with Nylon??? I have leather headstalls that I usually run in but I also have some nylon headstalls on a couple bits and I actually prefer nylon reins. And I have 3 sets of leather reins and I only really like one of them (ed wright).

FLITASTIC - 2016-06-01 9:03 AM LOL I don't Judge, but being a guy I do NOT want BLING...... I had to special order a saddle because it seems ALL of them are just to Blingy these days!!! I need to be worrying about my run, not if I'm leaving a Serovsky crystal at the 3rd barrel. lol
I love bling, If I cant blind them with speed my tack will get the job done

This!! If I can't be fast, I need to at least look good

I have never purchased a saddle with my own money. My uncle had a courts made for me when I was 10. That lasted me a long time and I still have it. I was given a Herford Tex Tan NBHA addition in '07 by my mom as a high school graduation present and I ride it still. Most of my pals have new custom double Js. I can still beat em :).  I would love to have a double j, or maybe a cactus..but I am just too darn cheap to fork over the cash.

We got Double J certificates as awards for a series, and honestly, if I had paid the $3200 for it as opposed to $600 (to pay the difference from the certificate), I would be sorely disappointed. I think just like the Crown C's were a fad for a quick minutes, so are the Double J's. Not that they aren't good quality saddles, they just aren't for everyone, even though everyone seems to be getting one!

I use what I use because it fits me and my horse well. I owe it to him to have good quality, fitting tack because he's doing things for me because I ask, not necessarily because he wan't to for fun. So I did invest in a custom fitted saddle for him to make sure he is comfortable and because I had the money to at the time. But when it comes to headstalls and breastcollars, he has to earn those. Every set I have I have either won on him, or won enough money to buy it for him.

And I have first hand experience of being judged by someone at a race. I was sitting outside the arena before a run and someone walked by, laughing, and pointed to me and my horse and said to her friend "if they think they can get that big horse to run in and turn in that dinky little d-ring snaffle, they've got another thing coming." 5 minutes later I went in there and ran the fastest time of the weekend and the lady wouldn't even glance my direction for the remainder of the weekend.

If someone wants to judge you based on what you use (safety concerns aside), then it just shows poor character on their part.

Not unless it needs to be repaired or does not fit and then not really "judge" because I was that kid in 4-H, I rode bareback at home, didn't own a saddle, actually borrowed one from the neighbor to show in so my 11 hand POA carted a 16 " rope saddle. I learned quickly about pads. I guess the only thing that makes me really judge someone is if they have the latest fads tack wise and clothes wise and their horse looks like it could use some feed or a farrier.

I don't judge people unless their tack doesn't fit the horse or the horse is noticeably uncomfortable because of it (I'm looking at you, chick that yanks all over her horse with a freaking 10"shank twisted wire noseband combo bit, metal twisted wire noseband, etc. and wonders why their horse is alley sour). Do I like and have shiny tack? Yes. Do I run in a nylon headstall if that's the bit I've been using at home? Also Yes. Not sure what the problem is with nylon headstalls?

I dont know if "judging" is the correct word...

But you can bet your bottom dollar that I am keenly observing every tack choice that you make as my competitor.
Heck yes I notice if you stand next to me in a DJ or Crown C saddle complete with heritage brand headstall/breastcollar and 5 star saddle pad.
Heck yes I notice if you pull up in a Bloomer attached to a Western Hauler.

Transversely

I am going to notice if you are behind the times on tack trends.

Am I judging you as a person or horse owner? No.

I don't think there's anything wrong with nylon tack! I just get so aggravated when it gets hard and I can't slide the ends through buckles anymore! I had to pull out a pair of pliers last week to get a bit off of a headstall that's been sitting for a while. Leather is just more convenient for me.. plus I have a cool job where I can get it. LOL - that helps a lot!!

I don't judge I'm just constantly looking at others tack and saddle choices to see what all is out there. I was never one for bling, but I find the tack sets like Heritage Brand, gorgeous and eye catching. I'd love to have one! (Not to run in. I'd hang that sucker on a wall and stare at it all day every day.

I also grew up in Nylon... Red, then Purple. I then switched to leather.

I don't judge as much as admire tack. However, there was this tiny pudunk barrel race and the girls saddle literally rode like 6" off her horses back and like a foot coming into barrels. And she whooped me around the block. Teach me to judge LOL

I also won a black Nylon headstall recently and its become one of my favorites because it has a really pretty award concho on it and I think it looks really nice. I also really like how sturdy it feels. Some of my leather seems to be crap, no matter how I take care of it or how nice of leather I thought it was when I bought it.

LOL, me too, my favorite headstall for years was a brown nylon one that I used on my HS rodeo mare, we had to get the nylon one because pony tack was a little too small and horse headstalls were too big. One of the best little horses with the biggest heart ever to look thru a bridle looked thru that one right there.

Not so much judging others, but I DO notice ill-fitting tack. I cringe when I see the back cinch loose enough for a horse to get their back foot caught in there, especially.

And ok, if you ride up next to me and I see you totally blinged out in Heritage Brand tack (or something similar) and a $3k plus saddle, I will sit and silently ooh and ahhh to myself and I MIGHT think to myself 'dang, how does one afford all that?' But not in a judgey-mcjudgey kind of way.

Interesting threadΒ I don't know what is wrong withΒ nylon tackΒ

The reason why I don't like nylon tack is if my horse gets hung up the leather will break before nylon will.
