Location: Missouri | Every single time. 20% Ferriers are hard to find and if you do find one they are questionable at best. Tipping my guy makes it so when my horse does pull a shoe he comes out that very day or the next. That to me is worth a tip. I don't want to have a pulled shoe and no answer from him. |

Location: "...way down south in the Everglades..." | I normally do tip $20. Only time I don't is when he doesn't give me notice or misses the appointment. My old farrier was awesome about ALWAYS keeping me in the loop if there was a delay and if someone pulled a shoe he would work me in before the weekend every single time. So he got tipped every. single. time. I want him back! |

| I gave my farrier a tip, I told him to pull his pants up or buy longer shirts! I hold my horse and feed him treats so he will stand for trimming. My husband is also my farrier. |

Location: Alabama | I do most of the time. I also make coffee for his thermos in the winter, keep cold drinks in the fridge in summer, have horses caught and tied when he arrives, and have a safe well lit place out of the weather for him to work.
He drives about an hour one way to do two or three horses for me and doesn't charge me extra. He shows up on time and does an excellent job. I want to keep him coming back! Good farriers are HARD TO COME BY! |

Location: In The Snow, AZ | I have tipped when a special trip is made for a pulled shoe, or if I need horses done on a certain day and he has to move his schedule. Other than that, he charges me enough as it is.
I make sure horses are tied. Feet are picked. They're fly sprayed so they don't fuss. And I braid and wrap tails up out of the way. I offer bottled water. Help with the horse if I can. But he makes enough on my two horses. |

Location: North Dakota | I tip $10-$15 everytime for my two horses. I am so lucky I got the chance to get on his short list of clients he still does. He is in his upper 60s and has shorten his client list a lot the last several years. He travels from 2 1/2 hours away. I always offer drinks/food as he spends close to a whole day at the barn I manage trimming and shoeing all the horses. I have a blast on "farrier" day because he is fun to talk to and so full of knowledge. I don't what I will do if I ever have to find another farrier as we have some really crappy ones around here that have messed up a lot of feet. |

| My husband is a farrier and I can tell you that the people who tip (even just a few dollars) are put at the top of his priority list when they need him. He will fit them in or make a special trip out ASAP for those few that do simply because he feels appreciated by them.

Location: Slipping down the slope of old age. Boo hoo. | Yes, I tip my farrier...and send a nice gift to him and his family at Christmas (usually some type of family fun food basket). I also make sure to rinse my horses' legs prior to his visit, have them in their stalls, provide a fan for him, and set out my fly spray for his use. And I worked very hard to teach them to stand nice in the cross-ties for him. Thanks to him - no hoof issues...no lameness issues and he comes quickly if one pitches a shoe...and has even drive to a show to replace a lost shoe. |

| Thanks for all your responses :) had my guy out today, gave him a 20% tip. He works hard and it wasn't the easiest trim on my filly this time around |

Location: South Central Florida | With that said. . . . I had 1 farrier for 24.5 years. I tipped always. He started training his son (he also went to farrier school) I was fine with him doing my pasture horse trims. But the Rodeo horse/horses I wanted my original farrier. He was out of town for a while, and gradually started sending his son for my good horses (a few years into his training), who never really had the talent or love for the trade. I started losing shoes literally monthly, then weekly. The son blamed us (I believed him for a while but had no idea what we were doing). I was never mad, and never ugly, then one day after 24, yes TWENTY FOUR years, he stopped returning my calls. His son said my horse was losing too many shoes.
Did a lot of research and actually interviewed 5 farriers before I picked the one I have now. It's been 3 years-ish :)
But I still tip. This farrier is ALWAYS there as fast as possible if we have a problem, excellent feet. My vet comments on how balanced she is (and she doesn't have great feet). |
