| I couldnt really care less if a horse has a brand on it if I like the horse. I owned a horse with 5 different brands and She was a great horse. I called her my hippy horse. lol
The only thing I will say, is I don't really like when people who are not trainers, or breeders make their own personal brand and put it on everything they own just because. It just doesn't make sense to me. . . but maybe Im weird? |

Brands distract people from stealing them. If they go missing, or have to be turned loose due to flood or fire, the brand is proof of ownership. The brand inspector will contact the person who owns the brand.
Yes, this ^^
I prefer brands and could care less if a horse has multiple brands. I'm more interested in having a very easily identifiable way to find one of my horses in case of a fire or hurricane or theft.
And honestly, each to their own, but whether it has a brand or not doesn't make it better or worse running down the alley....so aside from cosmetic issues, I really don't get why anyone would care so much? |

Location: OH | I had a girl that had put a deposit on a colt and it stated in the contract that the foal would be branded---she obviously did not read it. Came time for weaning and we told her she could pick it up once branded and she said she did not want it if it was branded and I said, well, it is not leaving here without a brand. She forfeited her deposit and did not take the foal. Ours is a small brand---just JJ on the hip. Personally, I think the girls situation had changed and she could no longer get the filly and she was looking for an out, because it was very out of character for her. |

Location: Canada | They way I look at it is someone cared enough about their program (Breeding/training etc) to permanently mark the horse as having been part of that program. Unlike papers that can get lost a brand is a permanent way to say I had a hand in this horse and I'm proud of it.
I personally think well known brands help sell horses. If you go to a rodeo you have no idea how the horses are bred just by the looks of them but if you see 5 or 6 horses that are winning in multiple events with the same brand you're probably going to check out that breeding program.

I brand mine with my own brand after I have had them for awhile, if I know for sure that I will be keeping them for the rest of their lives then I brand with my own for reasons of being stolen are getting loose.

But there is a person that I have a real deep unfondness for and she brands all of her horses and I wouldn't take one of hers for free because of all the negative energy that the brand stands for. |

Β Is this a serious question? Idk would you buy an "ugly" horse if it won everything... ? This question just kind of cracked me up... Have we become that vane of a society that a brand can make or break a sale?!?! smh...Β
Yes, it is a serious question. I saw a post on SM recently regarding folks not buying horses with brands. I found it unusual so figured I'd ask the question to see how prevalent this actually is.
I personally feel if a person has a problem with the brand we use, they don't deserve a horse we raise. That brand is over 30 years of genetic crossing, up to 5 generations of horses and now 2 generations of people.
Β This is how I feel. Although my program is not nearly as established. But I put a lot in to what I'm producing and I'm proud of my horses and want people to know where they came from. |

This would be my opinion as well. If I did not want to be associated with a particular person be it for whatever reason, then that might detour me.
We brand at the point we are okay being associated with that horse for the rest of his or her life. Not every horse that comes through ththe barn gets the brand. |

| The worst purchase I've ever made was branded by the breeder on his left hip and a horse trader on his left shoulder.
When people see the hip they call it the bucking brand and when they see the shoulder they just shake their heads. Lol! I'm happy for the brands because I would never go near either one of these again. I hope those two keep branding :)
Now I have two horses that I adore with brands. I would look for these brands again! |

Each person to their own, but to discriminate all horses wearing a certain brand?
The owners could have changed their breeding program since, it could have been the horses life experiences after leaving the breeder.
You could be missing out on some exceptional horses |

After the weekend I've witnessed, they will be branded soon. For a brand's true purpose-identification.
I have seen so many FB posts of people looking for horses, do you know how many sorrel/bay/etc horses there are??
I want to be able to say, horses will have Flying W brand on right shoulder. |

I agree, a brand should have a purpose |

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | We brand everything we raise...for that matter, pretty much everything we own gets a brand. I wait as long as I can on the babies so it doesn't get so big. If I keep them until they are yearlings I will do it then.....but before they leave our ranch they are branded. I live in ranch country, and brands are a fact of livestock ownership.

| I was just asked this question from a breeder. I personally don't mind brands from the breeder, usually if I buy a horse from a breeder, I like that breeder and if the horse does well, I like that people know where it came from. I don't like multiple brands or people that brand everything they buy. If you raise it and want to brand it, I am okay with that.
It doesn't deter me but I would rather have a brand than initials in papers. With that said, I just like the actual name without it. Flows better without initials. LOL |

I already didn't like the horse...these were multiple strangers at different venues approaching me with the same feedback about both the breeder and the trader.
So no, I think those odds are pretty good that there is a consistent pattern there.

Location: MD | I will admit that there is one particular brand that a lot of newbies and gunsels see and go running with their checkbook. When I see it, I stop looking at the horse, no matter how much I might like the looks of them. Beyond that particular exception, the size, location, or number of brands on a horse doesn't impact any decisions that I might make about them. |

Bless your heart, you are sure seeing the purpose a brand needs to cover. . . . I can imagine the peace of mind having a brand on your horses would give you in situations like you're involved in and witnessing right now. |
