A year and a half ago when I had one of my mare's hocks done, it was about $450. Farm call, brief exam, sedation, surgical scrubbing, and the injections.

kwanatha - 2017-02-21 4:18 PM  Can anyone tell me what they pay for hock injections? I just got a bill for $989 it included two views of each hock. two injection sites per hock. Am I crazy to be upset over this?

In California I would say you could EASILY pay that. I had hocks done without anything else and it cost around $500 at a small vet. I had a lameness on a sound horse with a few x-rays down in Monterey County at a large and well-known vet and paid around $800. In Texas, a few hundred could do it all (at one of the top vets out there)

A little off topic, but just on the line of how vets can differ.. Our dog needed a lance canine removed at about 5 or 6 months. The specialist we were referred to quoted us $500 for anaesthesia in her defence, it was going to be administered by a specialist in anaesthesia but my god my brain almost imploded... after all was said and done we were looking at over a grand to pull a tooth (they also wanted to take about a dozen xrays... to pull one canine). We ended up going to the breeders vet and payed about 200 after all was said and done. Some vets pricing just doesn't make sense!

From a veterinarian standpoint it's always very interesting to see the different reactions to pricing.... It greatly depends on the area you live in and type of facility you are at (referral, academic, private practice etc).

I practice in a more rural area and charge $260 for a set of hock injections (which to me is verging on highway robbery- but it's what I've found I can charge in this area). This includes both upper (DIT) and lower (TMT) joint injections- I inject a combination of Legend (HA), Depo-medrol and Triamcinolone in each joint. I worked for a referral surgical practice closer to the city and we charged close to $400 for a set of hocks there.

Sedation runs about $20, and if I did a lameness exam ($50) + radiographs ($30/view, 2-4 views per hock). That total would be about $500.

What you have to remember about joint injections is you get what you pay for--- You aren't just paying for the medicine that goes in the joint. You are paying for the time/labor it takes to scrub (at least 5 minutes per hock), the expertise of the person knowing where to stick that needle in the joint, etc. along with all of the other medicine and materials you need.

Also, not all hock injections are equal. There are many practitioners out there that still only inject one joint (usually the lower, TMT). There are also many out there that don't use any form of HA in their injection, just a steroid and usually it is Depo. The addition of the HA adds on to the price. Ultimately before judging whether you are paying too much, consider your area, what they are actually injecting into the joint and what other procedures were completed.

barrelracinbroke - 2017-02-21 8:58 PM Was there an itemization on the bill?
exactly it also says 2 xrays each hock.......

I was curious if they listed more detail such as what they injected with or??? And Which 2 joints? I know if they did uppers and added Hyvisc or some sort of HA, it can add more to the cost as well as some other things. So, still curious if there's an itemized bill with a cost breakdown? There's not a "cut and dry" injection. They're definitely not all created equal and the meds differ but, this seems super high! Did they use Hylartin V or something? It's great stuff (expensive) but, some vets in this area are not carrying it in the field any longer due to it being in a glass vile.

My last visit hocks were 750 to inject upper, middle and lower joints. He is fusing and the top and bottom may not communicate.

Hoping to find someone a little less expensive.

Sorry everyone i did not mean to abandon the post. computer problems. anyway. I can't remember the name of the medication but i know it was not the cheap meds. i saw an itemized bill but did not get a copy. they are supposed to send me one. There was nothing else on the bill. there were 4 xrays at $55 each the rest is injections and sedation. that is all. I feel ripped off. I have gone to alamo pintado and got better pricing. the bill came to $989. I am not in a rich area. The high dollar areas are 3 hours from me

I paid less then $500, about $485 for blocking both hocks, and injecting both uppers and lowers in each hock, that's including sedation and i traveled to my vet. X-rays were $50 a shot when I did them as well before I injected.
