I have had lots of parking and riding "events" but one thing that I will not forget is when someone's dog bit my son! We went to a 4H show being held in our area. As I walked up to the table taking entries a large dog rushed out from under the table and bit my 6 year old son in the face through his nose and mouth! My son started crying and screaming and I grabbed wet wipes from my purse to put on his nose which was bleeding really bad! One of the women sitting at the entry table jumped up and  said, you shouldn't touch other people's dogs! Not a sorry or can I get something for you or anything at all positive. I was holding my sons hand so I know he didn't touch the dog it simply rushed him and bit him in the nose and mouth! I gathered my son and walked towards my truck. As I was walking off I heard a guy start shouting at the woman saying she knew the dog bites and why would she have the dog around other people. They were all staring when they saw me pull out of the facility without entering! I never entered or went to that facility again!!!Â
Did you take him to the ER, I know if you take someone to the ER for a dog bite they report it to the law and the law/sheriff go and have a talk with the owner to check out the dog and why it happen and if rabies shots are in order. I know they do this in my area,, If not I would have reported her... Poor little boy I hope that he healed up find.

Oh dear!! Poor baby!!!! That just hurts my heart. And for her to immediatly lay the blame on you (your son) without even appologizing?!? How insensitive! You could have been a much bigger pain in her rear if you had wanted to. I know people who have been taken to court for less, and had their dogs quartentined/paid fines and medical bills. Â
All dogs bite (they do have teeth) Why people think they have to bring their dogs to a barrel race is beyond me. You do realize that the dog should have been quaranteened?

All dogs bite (they do have teeth ) Why people think they have to bring their dogs to a barrel race is beyond me. You do realize that the dog should have been quaranteened? I was bitten in the face while holding my little girl in my arms. I layed on top of her until someone could pull the dog off me. It was a GSD. My brothers dog actually. He was visiting from out of town. The dog had never shown agression before and was around 7 or 8 years old. We were taking family pictures when it happened. My brother wanted to shoot him but we decided to get the sheriff involved to quarantine him. He had no rabies. We euthanized him and did an autopsy. He had cancer. Very well could've spread to his brain and could've easily been the reason why he snapped. It was a sad deal. I had to have a polastic surgeon sew my face up but my 3month old was fine. Just had some bumps from laying on the ground.
The dog should've been quarantined and the owners should have lost the dog. The owners should have been charged with child endangerment. I'm sure lots of people would've backed you up and said the boy never touched the dog. The lady who yelled at you was probably worried you were going to sue the facility is why she said that. Sheriff told me that had we not called and not done anything with the dog we could've easily been charged with child endangerment. He said we made the right choice by calling him and not shooting him. Even though all the men in the family really wanted too shoot him LOL.
ETA: The state would've pressed charges for child endangerment. You would've owed no money. Just a testimony and hospital records showing pictures and reports or treatments.

All horses kick and can bite too (they have teeth and very hard feet)! Why people take annoying, spoiled, with not manners kids to barrel races is beyond me too! :-)
I take my dogs to barrel races all the time and I will keep doing so. They are our four legged children and we take them everywhere with us! Both of them are well behaved and very loving but I rather people not petting them without asking us first and it scares the crap out of me when little unsupervised kids come running to my dogs and want to hug them!.
If dogs are allowed in the arena we always sit away from people with our dogs and if they are not, they will stay in our trailer. But you bet I won't leave my house without them!

The only thing that I have to say to you is that a barrel race is for HUMANS and horses....take your dog to the dog race. I am so sick of people acting astonished when their dog (who would NEVER do anything) bites a child, chases a horse, barks incessantly at the trailer, sh*ts in the stands or is just an annoyance to everyone. Unfortunately, it is not the dog's fault when they have ignorant owners!

But as long as they are not specifications in the entry forms that the races are ONLY FOR HUMANS AND HORSES, I guess, even if it is not ok with you, I will still be taking my dogs :-) And... If you are a responsible pet owner then you probably aren't the one being addressed.
I'm on both sides. I hate that I can't let my dog down (who is ALWAYS on a leash) because other dog owners won't be responsible and leash their dog (my dog has been jumped TWICE while tied to MY trailer). And at the same times, unsupervised, ill-mannered children that have no sense of respect or public decency also irk me.
ETA: the poor kid bitten by the dog is ridiculous. I cannot believe she tried to make it sound like it was you/your child's fault. Good grief. Poor baby

Location: Georgia | I went to a barrel race over the weekend. They have an outside warm up pen with barrels set up. I had to make a horse change last minute and decided to take a horse that hadn't seen a barrel in 4 months. So needless to say, we had a little refersher course. Anyway, during the entire time I was working my horse (about 20 minutes worth) there were three young girls on horses who used that time to race each other back and forth down the pen. While I will say they that never actually entered my personal bubble, their parents should not have allowed them to do that in the practice area. They are just lucky horse I was riding was the even tempered one and rarely gets flustered. If I had been on my other mare, I probably would have nicely asked them to leave. There were some close open fields they could have easily taken their fun to. I know these were just kids but some barrel horses are so fragile minded. Parents have to understand they cant just let their kids run wild at barrel races.

I agree with you! They are many irresponsible pet owners that give the rest of us a bad name. I take pride on how well behaved my dogs are and as I said, if we can take them in the arena, we try to sit away from people. And of course, they are ALWAYS on a leash.
What happened to that poor little kid is awful, there is no doubt about it

Warm up pens are INSANE these days.Â
Kids make me so nervous. I really wish parents would teach them how to warm up their horses without getting in everyone's way. It's just going to end up getting someone or someone's horse hurt.Â
While we are talking about kids...the banging around and running up and down the bleachers drives me nuttttssss. I had a kid run over my feet with a scooter at a race this weekend. Literally, ran over my foot. My pinky toe nail fell off today actually. Ughh..let them play behind the bleachers.
I'm the type of person who will "shut that sh**t down!!

Why people take annoying, spoiled, with not manners kids to barrel races is beyond me too! :- ) I take my dogs to barrel races all the time and I will keep doing so. Oh wow, geez, who the heck ****ed in your cereal this morning lady? I was not aware that barrel races were only for humans and horses but I am glad you cleared that out for me! But as long as they are not specifications in the entry forms that the races are ONLY FOR HUMANS AND HORSES, I guess, even if it is not ok with you, I will still be taking my dogs :- ) And... No worries, if my dogs every go potty in the stands, which in all the years that I have been taking them they never once did, I PROMISE you I will clean the mess. I think this goes back to: if the shoe fits.
Good grief. Poor baby I agree with you! They are many irresponsible pet owners that give the rest of us a bad name. I take pride on how well behaved my dogs are and as I said, if we can take them in the arena, we try to sit away from people. And of course, they are ALWAYS on a leash. What happened to that poor little kid is awful, there is no doubt about it
You sound like a very responsible dog owner, to bad theres not more dog owners like you

I went to a barrel race over the weekend.
Why are people so afraid to tell a child/kid to stop doing what they are doing? I am not!! If they are making noise in the grandstand running up and down, yup, I am going to go up to them and tell them that they can't do that anymore,( i have done this on more than one occasion) if there is a child/kid in the warm up pen with NO manners, yup, I am going to say something to them!! I am not afraid of their parents either, bring them on!! I don't understand why everyone stays quiet?? Good grief!!

Location: Where the buffalo roam | I too take my dogs to races, but very rarely do they get to go around the crowd (they have always been good with people) as they don't belong there unless there is some kind of dog activity with the race. My biggest pet peeve with dogs - people who let them run loose around the barn area and they pee on everyone's hay, blankets, carts, etc. Dog parents with no sense of responsibility are the first ones that complain about the kids running around unsupervised, but let their dog annoy everyone. They make it difficult for everyone that haul with dogs. I actually have not entered a very large race due to the fact that dogs were completely banned from the facility, even outside, so that's something I have to accept.
If your dog is protective, then keep it locked in your trailer. My husband had one sneak out from underneath our trailer (yes - not the person who owned the dog) and tried to bite him. What he told her is not repeatable, but since then she has been very careful with her dog and we are still friends and there have been no other incidents.
FYI to the person that says races are only for people and horses - I have no other option except to take my dogs with me as they are a part of my family and are inside dogs so cannot just stay home alone! Dog Sitters every weekend are not an option.

Because when you do tell the kids who are acting this way - you are setting yourself up for a huge mess. I actually had a 19 year old girl walk in front of me while entering the arena. Needless to say it didn't turn out pleasant. When I finished my run I told the girl what she did was rude, but more importantly that she could have hurt us all. Her reply - "I didnt bother you". Then he father proceeded to goose my horse, knock me to the ground and my horse walked all over me. Of course, my husband came over. Her father actually hit my husband and he had 9 stitches. Then they actually had the nerve to call the cops. People are asses and self centered. They don't give a crap about anyone. Warm up arenas have become a total crap house and no one cares.

Kids make me so nervous. I really wish parents would teach them how to warm up their horses without getting in everyone's way. It's just going to end up getting someone or someone's horse hurt.
While we are talking about kids...the banging around and running up and down the bleachers drives me nuttttssss. I had a kid run over my feet with a scooter at a race this weekend. Literally, ran over my foot. My pinky toe nail fell off today actually. Ughh..let them play behind the bleachers.
THANK YOU!!!! I can never understand how such tiny persons can sound like a hord of eliphants running up and down the bleachers!!! Drives me bonkers! And 9 times out of 10 the parents are sitting right there..... I guess they have perfected the "ignote the child" feature, but some of us that don't have kids haven't! if they need to play, let them find a safe place away from the arena/ warm up area/ alley etc!
And I am known to bring my heeler to most races, particularly when it is an overnight one. Most of the time she is very good dog, but when I am not there she is very protective of our trailer. And she got worse in the last couple of years... guess she is a grouchy ole girl... lol... And I have seen her lunge at a dog running (not on a leash) by the trailer, so now she only stays outside when I am there, and is always tied to the trailer. When I run, or go watch or something she stays inside the trailer.
And yes!! We have several arena's around here with lots of parking space... but.... you have to walk a bit to get there..... so of course every one wants to park inside and on top off each other....
