I wish it was easier to make friends at barrel races! I don't have any friends that barrel race...would be nice to have someone there to talk to sometimes. I've tried making friends, but after giving compliments, asking questions, most of the people stick their noses in the air and turn back with their group. Oh well, guess its not meant to be =p
are you serious? this is so very sad... I am very sorry that you feel this way and that you are having such a horrible experience. Don't give up, I assure you there are very nice people out there at the barrel races |

| I'm not sure what the attitude is with a lot of horse people. I come across a lot on Facebook and they make themselves sound like complete a#$holes. Cocky, rude, or just crazy. I think the thing that gets me the most is the level of dishonesty. Lots of dishonest horse people. Praising Jesus one day and screwing someone the next. Then they have the audacity to act like the person they just took advantage of should have known better. See it all the time. |

| I've competed in both the english and western world. Both have those nasty individuals who will rip every rider and horse apart. The difference I've seen is in the english world they are nasty directly to you. Believe me, you know their true character from the get go. When I switched to western and then eventually started barrel racing, I was overjoyed with the warm and helpful welcome. Then I started hearing the comments that were accidentally recorded in my runs by "friends." I'm too broke, too fat (which apparently makes me abusive), ride an ugly donkey, and don't deserve to be in the same arena as them.
Like the above posters said, every sport has these type of people. Find your small circle of friends that are a positive influence and support you no matter what! |

You get charged with assault if you do. Speaking from experience. Although it was lowered to disorderly conduct. Still, on probation for a year.
In my defense I told her if she didn't shut up I was going to hit her. Don't think that just because you're over 200lbs that the 110lb girl won't make good on her promises |

Location: Texas | I think a lot, but not all, horse people get wrapped up in their own ego. They develop cliques and it becomes cool to stare down their noses at other people, gossiping, harshly criticizing. Sometimes being around other horse people literally feels like high school all over again. I see it all the time. The key is to not let it get to you. They try to drag others down to make themselves feel better. Who cares what they think? Who cares if your horse isn't the best looking one there, or that you pulled up in an old trailer that's seen better days? What matters is what's in your heart, your mind, and how you treat your horse. Go out there, do the best that you can do and have fun with it. |

Location: Texas | I think part of taking care of yourself is not sitting in the stands and listening to that crap. Do not give others the power to determine your mood, self-esteem, confidence level, etc. It's toxic. Just walk away. Definitely try going to a different event...I am in TX & we have lots of Cowboy Churches that put on playdays. There's usually lots of choices when it comes to where to spend my time and $. |

| Last year at our local fair and rodeo, one of the fair board members made a sh!tty comment about my daughters rodeo run. She ended up being right in the middle but it was a bit off the fast time. We were happy as it was only the 6th run the mare had made and my 15 year old daughter trained her herself. From round pen stage to rodeo, and my dad bred and raised her. An ADULT fair board member said "maybe she should've stuck to the western games". I was livid to say the least.
The next morning, I happened to be watching slack while I drank my coffee. I watched this women's 22 year old daughter run on a much more seasoned horse. She ran over half a second slower than my daughter. And they paid more money for this horse.
I walked right by her, caught her eye and gave her the most disgustingly sweet smile you could imagine. I knew and she knew that karma came knocking.
These types always get handed their @ss. You may not see it, or know it but I promise you Karma gets them in the end. |

Passive agression is always the best answer.

Not usually my style, but in this particular case it was effective. And satisfying. |
