My farm sitter who was a reproductive specialist at several breeding farms told me about the Foalwatch test and it has been a life saver for me.  I used it on my mare and one of my miniature donkeys and it nailed time of delivery within 12 hours.  I usually let my donkeys do their own thing but this one had prevoiusly lost 2 foals so I was able to get her put up and be there to help pull if needed.  She had a healthy baby about 8 hours after I took the test reading.

Good info - thanks!

I've also heard you can use pool stips to test PH balance. Stud owner told me you can taste the milk; goes from salty to sweet as foaling approaches. I tried to squeeze a little out and she raised a warning leg so I backed off. LOL. I don't have a stock to hold her but will see if I can get someone to hold her while I get her up next to a gate to get some out. I'll give it a taste test... lol

Another friends just foal at 360 days. Ugh. I guess I'll go back to work tomorrow and save PTO. A friend said she would drop by at least once a day to check on her. It's hard when you have a full time job - don't think I will do this again unless I'm retired and can just sit and watch them all day. lol

That's why you need a live feed cam! Then we can all watch and alert you when something's going on.

I didn't have a way to hook up a camera in my barn either - my internet doesn't reach and it is too far away from the house to run a wire.  I tested my mare's milk every couple of days for about 2 weeks and honestly didn't think the test was working.  Then one Sunday morning I did the test, it turned blue and by that evening she was foaling.  I randomly tested my donkey but didn't think she was very close and wasn't entirely sure the kit would work on a donkey but it turned blue and just a few hours later we had a baby.  It's pretty user friendly but the instructions make it sound way more complicated than it should be.  If you do get the test, PM me and I will send you the way my sitter had me do it.

I kept thinking maybe they should have tried the test on April the Giraffe as many people they had awaiting that birth

Haha hopefully this works! Down With Promises x Hawkish stud colt! We did the PH test strip and it read between 6.2 and 6.4 and she foaled 24 hours later! We also wormed her 24 hours before hand too which some say can induce labor

worming mares before foaling is for some parasites that can be passed through the milk, it doesn't induce labor... you don't want to induce a mare, let her foal on her own time.

Exactly to what Casualddust said about the induceing labor, horses are not like human babys, foals need to stay as long as they need to be, the mare should foal on her own time they will know when its time to have that baby.

agreed.

Day 347... still dripping, but seems to drip more at night than during the day. She's still just chillin, eating hay and hanging out in the shade. She's in no hurry to give me that baby. lol

A friend told me the milk taste will go from salty to sweet - once sweet, will foal within 48 hours. Well, since it was dripping this morning I did a little taste test. It wasn't salty nor sweet so idk. My mom said I'm going to get worms from tasting the milk... I used to eat dirt when I was a kid so I'm sure I'll live. lol

Since she has been dripping milk for a couple of days, I would consider getting colostrum from a vet once she does foal, or milk her and freeze it. They only make it once and if she's dripping a lot she can be losing it to the ground. Not anything to panic about, but I would have it on your radar.

I've read that... certainly something to consider. Started as slow drip only at night but has progressed to a pretty steady drip all day today - this afternoon when she kicked at a fly there were bouts of streams. He said nothing to worry about so far. Vet office is 5 min from me so that helps my anxiety a bit.

Really hoping the Grand Entrance is tonight!

It sounds like you are prepared and that is the best thing. As long as you are aware of what to look for, you can avoid all the potential issues that others may not see until they are very obvious!
