I have a 1/2 inch on her, and flip between a short and longer cinch. I recently switched from the mohair to a fleece CE.
Here is the Mohair and 7/8 5 Star.

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | ajs2002 - 2018-01-10 11:23 AM are all the pads you tried felt or wool? maybe try a fleece pad? Not anything I would want to run in.... Yikes... but might be worth trying for a few work outs.
That 1/2 inch is a Coats saddle pad, which I believe is all fleece? The others are 5 stars, so wool. |

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | Dash4KJ - 2018-01-10 11:26 AM It looks like your cinch is too long. It may be meeting the pad when shes working and causing a pinching action of sorts with the pad.
I make sure to not have it up too high where it would pinch her, but that could be part of the problem. I'll try a shorter cinch. It is rubbing where the offbillet and latigos sit though?? |

I KNOW! My brain hurts over it!
I don't think so since the rubs are above where the guard is :( blah. |

Location: NE Texas | OK, so now seeing this all in one place with the pics and not on sc or messenger, looks to me like what you have is front to back movement. Her shoulders are pushing the saddle back, then her hip is pushing it back forward and with the latigos touching her, you get a little bit of back and forth there. Do you not have any friction like that under the pad? I know you've mentioned rubs at the loin a time or two. |

I had to post on BHW for you to give me a question.... LOL rude.
Only time I've had movement under the pad was last night when I tried a Corriente and 1/2 in pad. And I had rubs across her loins. |

Well I can see it all in one place here, silly! Rather than on my tiny phone scolling all over the place and through 3 different social media apps.
OK, ride the Coats, shim the front with a no bow. Try the same thing with the corriente. It may be where the billets are hung, too far back. You may need something that sits the saddle back behind the shoulder or at least a little further back with how she's built and filled in over the last couple of years. |

Location: lone star state | Thin skin horses can be really sensitive to tack. Put your saddle in place with the pad on but before cinching up tight put your hand under in the area where the rub is and feel for pressure or anything that may annoy your horse. Maybe a leather knot thats holding your billet/latigo in place, possibly the dee(metal) coming from your saddle to latigo...look for something simple that most horses/people dont notice...also look for signs from your horse telling you somethings irritating. Head bobbing, ear pinning, stamping feet, swishing tail, these may also give clues when its bothering. |

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | I may have figured something out. It looks nice and balanced on her, have zero rub marks underneath the saddle, and so far only one on the off side. Now this is after 2 rides of this set up but fingers crossed!!

Of the pictures of your mare saddled up you need to draw a arrow/mark on the spots that are rubbing so we can see exactly were the rub marks are if the rub marks start to show up again. |

Location: Where the long tails flow, ND | horsegirl - 2018-01-18 9:23 AM What did you change? Thinner 5 star, took the back cinch off, and switched cinches. However, I think I want to try a shoulder relief cinch so I can customize placement a bit more but so far so good!
Before when I took the back cinch off, the saddle was slapping me in the butt. But I think it was because I over padded??

Location: Lewisburg, Tennessee | Hi there, you might have figured your problem out already, but it looks to me like your cinch is too long. Every time my team roping hubby uses a cinch that's too long, he'll get those rub marks too.
?I was always taught that the cinch should just come above the elbow and be 6-8 inches away from the saddle D ring. I don't have to cinch up nearly as tight either.
?I can't find the video I'm thinking of, but here's a quick video of Bob Avila:
