Around OKC there are a ton of indoor arena's and barrel racing is like a way of life out there. It is a year-round gig and there are barrel races that happen every day of the week. There are also a lot of open arena nights and practices. I guess it would be about location. I know the Running R and OK Corral have open arena nights/barrel/pole practices. There was an arena that was doing open barrel/pole practices more South but I believe they charged $10 a person/per horse but I know they recently relocated somewhere else. I would be more inclined to be more north of OKC in my opinion.
The warmer weather and more abundant pasture/moisture are the bigger draw for us at this stage in our life. North of the City can get a little frosty. Barrel racing is just one of the things we would like to offer, but our main interest is cutting/cow horse and calf roping for affordable fun. |

Location: Oklahoma | I would LOVE one down in the Yukon area. That is my biggest problem. Piedmont has an outdoor club, but the ONLY time the ground gets worked is if there is a play day. We need something this way. Shawnee, Pauls Valley, etc are all too far for me to try and go to on a regular basis. |

Everyone is welcome at our place, now and in the future with some ground rules. I even have the sign for the entrance. It reads: “Leave your gun, dog, temper, politics, and complaints in the truck. Zero tolerance.” I hope we can follow those rules on here while we try to find a place that everyone can enjoy.

As long as you take your cap off and leave it in the truck, you are welcome to come in. Remember the ground rules. We want to have a place that everyone can enjoy, but if you feel the need to force your political leanings on people, I’m sure there are numerous other facilities in Texas that don’t mind that sort of thing, we are just not going to be one of them. We are more interested in bringing people together, not tearing them apart, and I did ask specifically that we keep this clean and to the point, and I’m sorry you and your friends felt the need to insert yourselves in that way in what has been a really constructive conversation amongst people just looking for a place to ride and practice. |

In Nebraska, there is a club called Western Nebraska Cutters. It was designed to be a low cost, fun family event, judged by other contestants and usually held at ranches that let people use their yearlings. Usually two a weekend, either at the same ranch or ones pretty close. It was great fun, affordable, and you didn’t have to have a high dollar cutter to participate. The more seasoned competitors were willing to help those of us that were learning.
That is one of the things I would like to try in OK if we can get the cattle together. We have a “ProCutter” thing with the little cow, but the real thing is so much more fun. |

We aren’t qualified to be therapy people but that is another thing i would hope someone who is might be interested in using the arena for. Not only for things like handicaps or PTSD, but also troubled kids. I saw a program about kids choosing horses instead of gangs, and it really makes a person wish they could do that as well. We have several old “pensioners “around the house I think would enjoy that. |

I know that sorting has gotten really popular, but we are not very interested in that event. A little too wild, and since we both grew up on ranches, our fathers’ voices screaming at us to slow down when you are sorting has forever ruined it for us lol.
I have never completed in Reined Cow Horse, but that is on my bucket list. I would love to talk one of those people into giving a clinic.

Riverbend Arena near Tulsa seems to be pretty successsful at exactly what you're describing.
I know Running R at Meeker is a really great place too, so maybe look hard at those businesses and see what they're doing.
There's nothing like that south of OKC. Wynnewood had a good indoor pen, but it costs a fortune to open ride, and it's not set up super great for barrel racing.
I'd look hard at Purcell and Norman.
Is the one you are talking about Anja Equine Rehab, the old arena for Nedpoint? I see they let people ride for $10 with additional horse $5. I don’t know what size that was. Otherwise I’m not sure I know where the other one is. |

ANJA does have an covered pen, the ground is great, it's fairly small. Not really set up to jackpot and I don't think they're interested in doing that there anyway.
There's a much larger covered pen that Dusty Watkins has on the east side of town. He hosts some jackpots. |

Location: LouLouVille, OK | FinneyQuarterHorses - 2018-01-27 10:01 AM Do you think something at Stratford or Wynnewood would be a good place? There is some land at both places that might work. We would like a 130 x 275 so big enough to rope and run barrels . What is a fair price/hr to ride? I go to Torrington, WY periodically and it is $45/hr with the arena worked, lights, heat, etc. We would like to do it less expensive than that, if we can stay busy.
I am in Wynnewood and I would love to see a nice indoor that has shows here! There are a few around and I enjoy going to them, but they are not in Garvin county! |

And Dusty Watkins is a SMALL pen, well it was a small pattern when I went to the only JP I knew they had there...but they had small places to lope in the covered pen because it was so muddy otherwise no place to warm up... and he moved, I am thinking it's being rented by a roper... :)

| We tried to get a contract on the one at Okemah, then planned on fixing it up but that giant house is throwing the budget a little curve. We just wanted an apartment in the barn lol. We are waiting to sign papers with the new owners of our place so in about 30 minutes we’ll be homeless. Coming back to Oklahoma tomorrow to see some more places so we’ll cross our fingers. Thank you all for the input, and let us know if you think of anything else. |
