Location: 31 lengths farms | What is Heist, can't find anything about it, would love to check it out also??? Also, the Cur-ost is expensive but so was feeding and vaccinating a horse I couldn't even halter. The ENC natural care herb I think was around 65 at the time for a 2 month supply so it is pretty inexpensive and again I had good results on it. Could ride on days that it wasn't blowing 10 MPH or more though couldn't ask for a head set from her. With the Cur-ost I dont' have to worry about the wind and she can maintain being asked to bridle up. It is expensive enough like I said though, during the winter I do go to the Green which isnt' quite as effective on her but I'm not typically running and showing during that time and would like to keep her comfortable without the price tag.

She would stand and toss her head, or rub her face between her front legs so hard she would almost fall down. My fiance and a good friend were convinced she was being a spoiled brat but this mare has always been an over achiever people pleaser. She went from that to starting to mis behave in the trailer (at 8 years old after being hauled since she was a yearling) seemingly over the span of about 6 months and it just kept getting worse. AFter a process of elimination we had a diagnosis of Head Shakers, we did the Cyproheptadiine (sp) and Melatonin and her fly mask 24/7 which helped but the side effects of Cypro concerned me. A friend suggested Equine Natural Care herbs Joint Plus to help with inflammation which was a much better fit and for her. Then about 2 years ago I decided to try Cur-ost on her to see if we could maybe get her even more relief as even with the ENC I couldnt' ride on days that there was wind. I know the suggested routine for head shakers on the Nouvelle website is either the Total Support and Adapt and Calm or Green and the Adapt and Calm but I've had much better luck with Pure for my mare. During the winter when I can't ride much or the pollen count isn't bad I use the Green with good effect. Heist is a Great product. I used it for about a year on a gelding I had but it was so EXPENSIVE and I just couldn’t do it anymore.

| I have one. He will flick his head and strike at his face with his front feet. Rubs his face on things especially after exercise. He will also gape his mouth while riding or exercising, weather he has a bit in or not. He snorts or blows alot also. Mine is the worst when pollen counts are high which leads me to beleive it is both allergy and exercize induced. Often times in the summer he will stand with his face in a corner. I have a uv fly mask for him. I think I have it mostly managed with daily doses of dex thru allergy season(vet perscribed this) I also supplement with turmeric, soak his hay, and feed a higher fat diet. I did try mag restore and that helped too, but i think that helped more in that he is a pretty fresh acting horse. This was all via trial and error to see what works and figure out what the triggers are. But I think I finally have him so he is comfortable. He went from being in my opinion dangerous to ride, at least i was scared to ride him...to maybe only a few mild flicks, which are very tolerable.Oh, and he cannot tolerate bugs..even in small amounts...Good luck. | I have an exercise, sunlight induced head shaker. It took me forever to find a vet that to diagnose and that it wasn't teeth, TMJ, the need of a chiropractor, EPM, ears,etc. UC Davis has some info on this and at one time they would send out urine test kit to rule out things. My horse is almost unrideable during windy sunny days even with her nose net. Otherwise the nose net is the only thing that has worked for her consistently. Spring grass forget riding unless I dirt lot her and that does work. I tried the melatonin, steroids, curost but for the last year the nose net, magnesium supplement, Valerian, keeping her weight down, avoiding alfalfa &, green grass works. I buy last years hay the older the better. I try to haul to only indoor races this time of year. No headshaking. This time of year mine will shake in the pasture. There was a study done in Europe on Headshakers and the relation to over grazed pastures. They determine that when the fresh grass would start cropping up especially after a good rain the horses would show symtoms of headshakers but when the grass was grazed back down the symptoms would go away. That is my horse to the letter. Good luck. |

Location: LA Lower Alabama | LIVE2RUN - 2018-03-29 2:51 PM two head shakers I have known, one had cow ticks deep down in his ears, had them removed and all was good, the other, was some what allergic to the sun, she only shook her head toward the evening(sunset) during feeding, it was crazy, put a fly mask on her and all is good. Just my experiences. Good luck to you I hope find out what it is!!
I have seen one with a seriously deep tick and the headstall must have been hitting just the right spot because it only did it riding. Had to sedate to get it out but an almost immediate release one done. Hope yours is something this simple  |
