The barn is way different. . . . I cleaned his feed pail out last night--he didn't eat much the night it happened--but I can't quite bring myself to clean out his stall completely. I told Sean no one else is going to use that stall right now; as much as I love all of mine, I just can't bear to see anyone looking over that door besides Doodlebug. Faci (he had been with Dan for almost 18 years), who isn't the most "please rub on me all over all day" type, came up to me in the barn after I sprayed everyone for flies and just put his head against my chest. . . . Right now the other horses are my biggest comfort as well as my biggest heartbreak, if that makes sense. It's like he knows and he wanted comfort too.

Β I had a really different experience today.I was at the hotel near the hospital my new grandbaby was born at.I walked outside to check the weather. Its a beautiful day with rain.So I did my praying outside in the rain.I thanked the Lord for bringing our baby into the world safely, and for keeping my daughter safe as well as many other things. Then I thanked HIM for the rain, and prayed for rain for our BHW folks that desperately need it.Then I THANKED HIM for all of pets, the ones we have, and the ones that have been in our lives, which brought me to pray for Dan and for peace in your heart. Those empty stalls hurt so bad,but eventually it makes sense to fill it with joy and another loved animal who deserves it too.ALL OF US ON HERE ARE SO BLESSED TO HAVE WHAT WE HAVE. And it's so hard to let them go.Im thankful your Dan didn't go during the winter,in the cold, and im thankful you had to watch the fish that night.Im still praying for you,and sending you hugs my friend.

Don’t feel any guilt about not being there when Dan left. I’ve yet to lose a horse, but we had to put our Mastiff down last September, unexpectedly. We were at the emergency vet and I told my husband it’s our duty to be there for her, but I couldn’t do it. I think it was better for us to not see her leave.

Sending prayers for you and your sweet family.

OH I am soooo sorry for your loss. To have to make the decision yourself is so hard to do.  You were not a coward, your heart is too big to see him go.  I did the same thing when I have to put mine down. I couldn't be there, but had someone special holding him. He was so lucky to have you. Hugs!

Prayers for you Chandler'sMom...it is always the toughest decision but one that is always best made a little too soon than a little too late. Rest easy knowing you did more than most for him and that love showed.

I teared up just seeing the title to this post - I did not even want to open it and read it. I am so sorry for your loss - I pray our Father gives you the peace you are seeking!

I'm so sorry to read this. It's the hardest choice we ever have to make for babies. But know you did the right thing in taking his pain away.

Oh goodness Debra, my heart fills with sadness for you and your family. You gave Dan a better life than most horses ever experience, and I know he took the best care of you too. Animals (and people too) come into our lives for a reason, and he was there for you throughout the ups and downs. Take comfort in knowing you were there in his greatest time of need, and he is running through green pastures with all the tall grass and mares he could ever want!

I cannot begin to make each and every one of you know how much your words of encouragement and love mean to me; I simply don't have the words. . . . God bless each of y'all.
