There is a lot to take into consideration. If you live close to a river you may choose to leave if its a direct hit because of surge and flooding. If you are on the right or left side of the storm may cause you to consider leaving, one side is stronger than the other. If you think you can or can not get back to your home afterward due to damage is a consideration. How prepared you are with generators, wells, etc. Its hard to choose what animals leave with you and NO you can not always get them all evac-d. You just dont pick up and run each time a storm is headed your way. Its turned into a waiting game for a lot of folks, and I completely understand having lived here forever. Sometimes its if you leave you are stuck not being able to get back home for a week. Last year I stayed. Turned the horses out, painted my number on them, kissed their noses. All was ok with the storm issues... until the tornado topped the trees between my house and barn!! that noise at 1 am made my butt pucker.. walking outside the next morning and seeing what looked like a war zone was not great. But **** happens. Still have huge trees down in my yard. Lots to consider... for me, I would NEVER live in tornado ally! Those things are whack! or earthquakes... NOPE... LOL at least we have a couple days to make an informed decision on how to proceed! This storm... I might have left!!! but I do have friends who are staying in the direct hit area. Its certainly a stress that I am about done with, but what part of the country doesnt have its issues? THATS where i wanna move to!!!
Yep. You know the dangers. We have marked the animals and turned them out. It is about 45 minutes away - the eye. No power, but will turn on generators later.

I grew up in Tornado Alley outside of Memphis. I was trail riding with a group of students during a summer camp once and watched a tornado touch down in the pasture. You've never seen people move so fast. Took bridles off horses, turned them loose, and laid on top of the campers in a ditch in the pasture. We were all okay, thank goodness, but that was something I NEVER want to do again.
Last year I was in South Florida and evacuated when Irma hit. I was thankful I didn't have a horse to worry about then, I don't know how some people deal with the stress.Â
I'm in Az we don't have weather like this, I would have no idea what to do in a hurricane, tornado, earthquake....we do have fires. though.. |

OMG ..... Nancy.... I just read where you lost so many of your pecan trees (thousands) ...... but, at least, you and your animals are safe !!!! |

Location: In The Land of Cotton | As someone mentioned, we are okay. I had to hunt my old broodmares, but we found them and they are fine. Our orchard is about 50% gone in the mature trees. The loss is devasting, but it will be okay. My husband thinks he has lost around 14,000 trees. He has 28-29K total. The crop was just starting to be harvested. Pecans don’t have good crop insurance, so nothing there.
Just thankful no one was hurt and lives lost. They are working on power but it could take awhile.
As my friend says - farming isn’t for the weak.. |

I'm so sorry about the trees but so glad y'all and the animals are ok

Location: Feeding mosquitos, FL | We had a couple of trees come down on the cow pasture fence and block the road, still no power or running water of course, but compared to my friends an hour west of here, we ain't got no problems. I know several people who have had roofs come off their house, barns destroyed, vehicles flattened, etc. etc. I haven't heard of any major injuries or deaths amongst the horse people but lots and lots of property damage. We're headed over tomorrow now that the Interstate is open with chainsaws, tractors, supplies to do what we can. Just heartbroken for them.
It was a crazy storm. Marianna is 72 miles inland and they are torn up badly. Some of the brick buildings downtown are split in half. This storm moved so fast that it was still a Cat 4 when it got there.
