Yes - the powers that be will tell a barrel racer to get off a horse that can become a danger in the alley way to herself or others. It happend to someone in 1992. They had to go on their backup horse the rest of the NFR. This was directly from the person it happened to.
If I remember correctly, when they first moved the NFR to Vegas they actually ran in and out the same alley way, but there was a pretty bad wreck up at the top (the horse coming out ran into one at the top) and that is when they moved it to coming in that gate.Â
Oh really, the whole NFR? Hopefully that's not the case, that little red horse can really mix things up! |

Yup and her backup horse just was not the quality of the horse that got her there and made for not a very fun NFR. The good horse was really bad though (very claustrophobic) and stuck a leg through a panel, reared up, ran over the person trying to help her in so they probably got concerned about liability. That was back when the next horse in was actually locked into the area at the gate (about stall size). |

Fun2Run - 2018-12-11 6:16 PM Quick3 - 2018-12-11 4:18 PM Did anyone else notice Tammy F. helping Taci in?  Tammy was also smiling ear to ear after Taci had a clean, money winning run. I thought that was pretty dang cool!Â
Now, Tammy needs to get a check!!   Taci bought her horse from Tammy. She's been her mentor for awhile now.
Cool!  I didn’t know that.  That explains the very pleased and happy look on Tammy’s face!!  I’m pulling for Tammy to check a check tonight! Â
I don't actually think Taci owns Smash... the last interview I saw with Taci, she only rides Smash but maybe that has changed. But yes he did/does belong to Tammy. They have a pretty cool interview on youtube.

I think Taci does own him, she states that she didn't have the money to buy him outright and had to set up a payment plan with Tammy to purchase him. |

Yes but if you listen to it further, it also says he isn't for sale and goes on to say "my kid and my horse at the nfr" so unless something has changed since the video which very well might... he wasn't for sale then. Either way it doesn't matter. just wanted to pass on the videos as I think it paints a picture of their relationship. |

Yeah how disappointing. I just noticed that girls are running different horses after incidents. Sydney and twisted sister, kimmie and foxxy and there was another that I cant remember the name of. And now Weast hasn't been back on reddy.
I do understand the liability/safety concerns but I sure would be disappointed to have to get off my main horse if that is what they make you do. |

I did notice!!!! I thought she must be her good luck charm! Tammy has been riding really well, I hope she gets in there soon!
I noticed this too and thought it was really awesome. Last night she helped Taci and then had to make her run still. Tammy is sitting 3rd (I think) in the average so hopefully she keeps them up and gets a nice check! |

Taci owns Smash. See link from AQHA in 2015 where it states she is the owner. She wouldn't be able to show Amateur if she wasn't the owner. https://www.aqha.com/shows/world-show/2015/working-orders-and-results/amateur-western/barrels-level-3/ |

But I noticed that the girls seem to switch mounts afterwards. Easily could be due to wanting them to have a mental break or whatever (personal choice) but I saw someone else ask and I am curious. Are they fined or is there a rule in place if a horse acts up in the alley?? Again, horses can get hot and I am in no way shaming anyone. Pure curiosity.
The horse also has to always remain facing forward in the alley too, right? They would get in trouble if the horse (say) spinned in a circle before going?
I've never had a permit or card, but I though that was one of the "rules" for the pro girls. |

As far as I know, it is forward motion in the arena. We have a few side gates out here and so you are suppose to side pass to where you wanna take off but not circle. However, I have seen people circle without repercussions.
I noticed she didn't get on her until right before she ran the other night so they must be willing to work with you somehow. I am glad to see she gets another shot on her. |

I have no idea about the NFR, but the way the WPRA rules were explained to me, you can walk over and do a PIVOT not a circle to set your run up. I was nervous because the first pro rodeo I entered was a trappy indoor (meaning run my hotter, lefty horse) without a center gate so I quizzed people pretty heavily before I made the trip. No one said anything about facing forward in an alley but the only other pro rodeo I entered this year was a big outdoor and I ran my horse who never does anything silly so I didn't worry about those rules. |

| They don't have to remain facing forward in the alley. The rule applies once you are in the arena. And as for the circle/pivot, depends on how harsh the judges are. You may think someone circles without getting in trouble, but depending on the judge they may be waiting on a fine in their mailbox after the rodeo. |

| It would be an incredibly hard decision to get off “the good” horse for a few rounds - but we do see it every year for the most part one or 2 girls make that choice. And usually “the good” horse comes back after a couple days off and makes a better run than the last one.
I also think they have to consider the big picture - as many horses that don’t fit that arena, some also don’t fit that alley set up - it’s like nothing they’ve ever seen - it’s not like if they’re getting uppity you can sandwich them between some steady eddy rope horses and ease on up there like a lot of set ups.
When you get to the point of rearing and almost flipping it’s time to look at the bigger picture - yes it’s the NFR, but crippling one in the alley, or crippling/killing yourself or a helper because the horse just isn’t handling the pressure cooker isn’t worth it IMO. If you have one flip on you in a tight setup like that - very strong likelihood of life altering or career ending injuries to both horse and rider.
I think the Louie’s and Sisters (both of them) that handle that scenario 10 nights in a row as well as they do are true diamonds in the rough.
Kylie did come back on Reddy last night, and she looked to handle it a lot better. I love watching that little mare and I hope they smoke a good one tonight.

Riley Duvall had the horse rear out of the box three times (I believe) and then again with Nick Guy five times. Looked like Riley tried to swap mounts and maybe the Judge said no. Looked like Nick was going to swap but there wasn't an option back there since he was towards the end and all the horses were down the tunnel all ready. Was curious why they didn't let Riley swap (looked like another dogger walked up the judges right after Riley's run) and what Nick and the judge on the chute were talking about after the run. I was talking to another bull dogger about it and he couldn't remember a horse leaving the box like that so many times at the finals. |

I can't remember what night it was, maybe third or fourth, but Rosa was just walking down the alley while Lisa patted her neck---and Joe Beaver said there's the horse and rider I want to help in! I have utmost respect for those ladies/horses and the nerve it takes to handle that arena. . . |

Yes! Lisa is not only a hand but having been there so many times certainly must have fewer NFR nerves than a lot of riders out there and just keeps everything so level and calm.
And remember so many of these horses are only 6 or 7 years old. Talented, but by a lot of standards barely seasoned to rodeo, this is really the first year for a LOT of them to crack out on the rodeo trail full time and even attempt to make the big show. |

| Just for the record. Kylie Weast’s grandmother, Florence Youree, qualified for the first NFR in 1960. Her mother qualified for the NFR the first year it was held in Las Vegas. She has grown up in the rodeo world. There is a lot of pressure on horses and riders— in any event—-having to perform 10 days straight. I was so happy to see her win round 10. She certainly deserved it. |

I really like that little horse, I was happy to see them come up with a plan to make it work and smoke a run!
We met her folks last year in Fort Worth at Cattleman’s while we were in the bar waiting on a table during the American - super nice family and had a great time chatting with them. |

| Everyone needs to remember that ALL of those horses were good enough to qualify those ladies for the NFR as were the horses in the other events. Several contestants were there competing under not so perfect circumstances. Do you realize how hard it is to hang on to that caliber of barrel horse with your arm messed up? Just getting on is an effort. Tyson Durfey lost his horse that he qualified on two or three weeks before the NFR. I noticed Caleb Smidt was from Bellville and did not make the connection. His brother in law and sister in law were the Byler couple that were killed in the helicopter crash. If you noticed Caleb was a little emotional when they interviewed him. Was SO glad he won. Kelly Bruner didn’t have the best NFR. I felt so bad for her. Again that is the horse that she qualified on so the horse has to be good. Apparently the horse just did not like that arena. She does have extremely nice horses. I am sure she will be back. |
