euchee - 2016-05-17 6:23 PM  We need term limits! Get rid of the career politicians! I'm tiried of them living like kings on our dollars while we have to scrape the barrel to survive.
Term limits do not work, career politicians just move from senate to house, to other elected positions, to lobby positions...
What we need is no golden retirement/pension plan... Â Once they are out of office, they join the SS rolls just like every other none goverment employee... In fact, all government workers should go onto SS... Â cities, counties, states are struggling (bankrupt) trying to meet the promised retirement plans... Â when their annual budget is 50% for retired employees, it becomes a huge financial burden and cannot be substained for long.Â
If goverment retirement plans were discontinued, you'd see a completely revamped SS system!
Term limits work for The Executive Branch i.e. Presidents....................................... |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | I'm all for paying them a good wage, but limit the COMBINED time in senate or house to say 10-12 years makes a lot of sense. It's not a radical change. Also, they should rely on their own retirement plan combined with SS, not the sweet deal they have now. They should be subject to the same ObamaCare standards the rest of us have to abide by. Half of congress is retirement age and we have too many powerful members of the house and senate over age 70.
Basically, congress needs to have more skin in the game. |

Also with his Dream Act designed to win votes in 2012, these illegal immigrants are now eligible for and many collecting Social Security. |

You can hate the President but how about sticking to the truth. Or try the Constitution, Article II, Section I.
The current budget submitted by this administration includes an 18% increase for the Former President Act. Something that ALL past Presidents have had since 1958. As we have more living past Presidents at the current time it takes more money for just the basic Secret Service. And you might do some research as to which past Presidents request the most for office, travel, etc..

I am not aware of any STATE with Term Limits. However, a referendum would display just how many Americans agree with the idea of term limits. And the last I was aware of, American Elected Officials serve at the PLEASURE of The American Voters.................................... |

| I would love to see term limits but congress will never vote this in. It will take an article five convention hard to do but possible. |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | Here's the deal. 75% of people favor term limits for congress. My question is what's wrong with term limits? We have a huge number of career politicians over the age of 65, impacting our lives in a huge way, and they have no skin in the game. People argue that we will be denied the "experienced" politicians in congress. How's that been working out?
I agree with Anniemae that they should have to put up with ObamaCare, like the rest of us, as well as Social Security and Medicare.....like the rest of us.
The problem is how do we compel congress to vote on these kinds of change? There needs to be a movement that pushes for these changes. Actually there already is. |

Karen, why did you not address the rest of my comments? You're always ready to defend this despicable excuse for a world leader but missed the rest of it. Those who paid into SS all their lives "earned" a raise, Obama did not.

Location: Bastrop, Texas | An Article V convention of the states would really be the solution to putting this country back on track. It's a tall order, but we are in desperate times and desperate times call for desperate measures.
Obviously congress has demonstrated they are too self-serving to make any meaningful changes, but an Article V convention of the states enables WE THE PEOPLE to override and bypass all three branches of government. Not even the SCOTUS can reverse a constitutional amendment. An article V can only PROPOSE an amendment. 2/3rds of the states must vote in favor of the proposed amendment, and after that 3/4ths of the states must vote in favor to ratify. Once that's done, it's the law of the land. Congress, the SCOTUS, and the president would effectively be bypassed.
Several amendments could be considered:
1.) The federal budget must be no more than 20% of the GDP in a given year.
2.) No individual or corporate federal tax can exceed 15%.
3.) Voters must have an acceptable voter ID which established an individual's identity and citizenship.
4.) All proposed federal legislation must be published for public viewing for a minimum of 30 days before it can be voted into law.
5.) Term limits not to exceed 12 years combined in both houses.
6.) Congress cannot force a citizen to participate in commerce, such as the purchasing of health insurance.
I think we will see more serious discussion on this topic in the months and years ahead, as it will become increasingly obvious to the majority of citizens that this is our only hope of saving our republic.

I now think we'll see an Article V convention in our lifetime. I wouldn't have beleived that five years ago. If this Supreme Court swings heavily into the liberal balance, all words of the constitution will have no meaning. People who think it's a good idea to interpret the Constitution in a progressive manner will be very shocked and disappointed with the unintended consequence of a treasured liberty lost.
I personally don't think any fiscal policy will trigger a convention. I beleive it will be the loss of a fundamental right. 1st or 2nd amendments are most likely to be attacked....and most likely to cause civil disobedience.....But the deterioration of the 10th amendment is at a point now where people are no longer able to govern themselves. This is where I think the breaking point is.

Location: SE Louisiana | The younger people today think that just because the politicians have been lying to the people for the last fifty years, that's how things should operate. They believe that's normal. Well it's not! Trump threatens to tear all that down. He will discover the truth behind the lies we've been told over the course of the last several decades and the politicians behind those lies are terrified!! He will OUT any backroom deals in his attempt to get it to stop..
And the press has been hounding him ever since he threw his hat in the ring. The press, not the people, have chosen the last ten or so presidents... But their usual BS is not working this time and they can't understand why?? So they keep slinging dirt, hoping some of it will stick....
