FYI - i tried a recipe from another thread that was 1/3 downy fabris softener, 1/3 showsheen, 1/3 water.    the smell was FANTASTIC, but it left a massive filmy buildup and didn't really work detangling.   as soon as it gets ABOVE freezing i am going to make some more only with less downy hoping it will work better.

I like to use the really strong conditioner that comes in with my boxes of Nice and Easy or Preference hair color.....I put some in a spray bottle and add enough water to be able to spray it and it works great and doesn't wash off in the rain much either. It will wash out if you are trying to wash it out or if it comes a flood but for regular rains it doesn't wash away. I love it and its free!

aquinnell - 2011-02-10 8:18 AM I may have to try some of these!!  Im sick of un-knotting manes lol

 WD 40

I've tried WD40-it will work in a pinch but definitely leaves a film that eventually gets dusty and grimey.
That's when I found the silicone spray-no dirt, looks shiney and lasts a looong time with just one good dose.  I think I used it the last time in November on my gelding and I can still finger comb through it-even with all the snow, ice and wind making all kinds of tangles.  I'm not kidding-try it, you'll never use anything else ever again.  Oh and I hardly ever wash my horses mane or tail.

What kind of mouthwash? Is there a kind to stay away from? A certain "flavor"?

Mouthwash is drying due to the alcohol.

Oils of any kind will attract dirt.

I like this stuff.  http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-2225&tid=froogle&CATALOG_CODE=1X814&EID=X1814001&zmam=1460880&zmas=1&zmac=49&zmap=X1-2225

It's realatively cheap & lasts a long time.  Works great & smells good.

I use Smooth n Shine, the reapair polisher, it's a gel, smells really good, doesn't make the hair greasy or gum up in it.  I usually put a quater size in my hand and mist the mane lightly with water and work it in. I get it at walmart by the ethnic hair products.
Here's what it looks like

By far the best and best price. They will not collect dust like showshine will!

By far the BEST one out there.  When I got Sidekick, his tail was one big mat.  I tried EVERY detangler out there.  His previous owner invented this and he also invented that Abcess mix that is so good.  He was a chemical phycisist (sp) at one point so he knows how to mix things.

Detangler (close enough to the actual mix, lol):

1 pint Alcohol
3/4 cup baby oil
3 oz Alpha Keri (blue bath oil)

Mix all igrediants in spray bottle.  Shake as you use.  Start at the bottem and work your way up.

This takes out mats in the mane and tail better than any OTC product out there.

After you use it, you can then wash and condition since it does have alcohol in it.

I want a detangler that I don't have to washout, you have one of those.

You don't HAVE to wash it out.  I never do, lol!

Some people freak out about the alcohol being in it and drying the hair.

I've never had a problem becuase I think all the oil counteracts the alcohol.

the mouth wash baby oil and conditioner is the best mixture ever.........I have used it for years. You can buy the cheap stuff at walmart or anywhere. Helps tangles like you would not believe, the shine is beautiful, leaves the hair soft and believe it or not it has helped with thickness and length since I have been using it. And depending on what you but the smell is fantastic and leaves no oily residue......I could just keep going. You gotta try it! (oh and it also keeps the nat eggs out of the mane and tail in the summer :)

1 part conditioner
1 part mouth wash
1 part baby oil

guess I'm lazy - but I don't mix my own and have used Shine by Vetrolin for five years running. No buildup to speak of and even with daily use leaves hair soft and desnarled. I love it.

WD40 or a generic brand. The generic is not that expensize and also works well for what it is intended for.lol We use it only on mane and tail. Dont spray it on there backs or I doubt you can keep a saddle on. My husband the teamroper has always used this and we have never seen a side effect.
