Location: Riding Crackhead. | rodeomom3 - 2014-01-03 11:27 AM CYA Ranch - 2014-01-03 8:06 AM Our high on Monday is predicting -15 actual air temp with high winds. The lows will be -30's. I'll have mine in the barn. Everyone has their own feelings and opinions on this. I choose to baby mine. The wind is the killer. I hate the wind. I only have 9 horses so I have stalls for everyone. You would be laughing and rolling your eyes at me. Our low last night was in the high 20's so of course I act like that is your kind of winters- heavy blankets, more hay than they could ever eat and up in stalls. Mine don't get the extremly thick winter coats like horses up north do and I try to keep their coats at a minimum. I have a race tomorrow and it is suppose to be sunny and high 60"s, if they get too thick a coat it is hard on them.
I don't know how you handle those winters every year. What do you do with your kids??? They bundle up and still go outside? Getting my kids out of the house was sometimes key to our existence. :) I would have gone Joan Collins on them if we were cooped up 24/7 together.
Its all relative to what we're used to though. In your area 20 is COLD! My kids are 18 & 20 now but when they were little and it got that cold they stayed in the house. Then they got a little older and they'd come out to help with chores since its the coldest times are the most work. Now that they're grown, my daughter hates the cold but my son doesn't mind it. He's a Sr and still on winter break and spent his break building a new ice shack. He worked overtime yesterday so he can get off early today to get his shack on the lake so he can fish in comfort during the cold snap. |

Location: North Dakota | Hmm, well Sunday they are saying the windchills are going to be near the -60*F mark, with an overnight air temp of -27*F.
I don't own a blanket and the horses do not go in the barn where I board. But they've got tons of hay, water, and excellent wind shelter. My two will be their usual fat and happy selves. I'll give my guys some extra grain on Saturday and Sunday, but that's just to make me feel better. They don't really need it.

Location: Riding Crackhead. | When it gets this cold my days consist of do chores, come in the house and bake, go back out in the evening for more chores. My daughter and I got the place ready for the storm today since hubby and son are working. TOok us until 1:00 but we're pretty much ready. Now I'm baking kuchen. Sadly Granny's recipe makes 8 kuchen's which means I'll have 8 kuchens staring me in the face saying....eat me, eat me! |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | Here's a couple of good articles. I'd definitely be giving them some wet down beet pulp, cubes, or grain to keep some liquid in their guts too. Colic risk increases during extreme weather like that because they don't drink enough.

I've got it in the oven as we speak. I have 4 peach and 4 cherry. What's your favorite? I should have been better prepared and made something different. |

Its a German dessert sorta like a pie but the crust is more of a bread with fruit, custard and topped off with a sugar/butter crumble. Can we say fattening as heck? |

I spend alot of time ebaying during the winter :)

OMGosh that's so true! I forgot about that. Sadly making kuchen is kind of a dying art. My grammy made it and taught me. She didn't even attempt to teach her 2 daughters (my mom). I'm pretty sure she didn't have much hope in the baking dept for them. LOL |

You and me both. We're probably bidding against each other! LOL Shopping online is a bad winter habit for me. I've been boot shopping this winter and its not like I need any boots! I've bought 2 pair so far and trying to decide on a 3rd pair now for my brothers wedding this summer. Lord help me. |
