| I started to wear one this year. No one around here really does...when you go to bigger shows you see it, but not really at any of the jackpots.
Husband and I both decided to show in them.
Mine is a Troxel.
It kills me how in hunter jumpers and cross country it is the norm to wear a helmet, I don't understand why it would not be in barrel racing.
To each their own I guess...and frankly I don't care what people think of me for wearing one. |

| I just started wearing one. It's not easy for me to do it, as I tend to be concerned about what people are thinking, but I keep hearing the stories and people's opinions mean nothing compared to possibly getting hurt, never riding again, or even worse.... Thumbs up to everyone who wears one, sets a good example for everyone!
ETA: I got the Troxel Intrepid, and so far I love it! Its comfortable and doesn't slip or move around and definitely does not get into my line of vision!

Location: Central Montana | I do, every time, every ride. The one exception I will make is if I'm in a show class, sometimes I will wear it, sometimes I won't. There is still a stigma in a show class and I do believe it affects placing.
I have an Ovation with the dial on the back and a Tipperay Sportage. |

| I wear a Troxel. I started wearing one after a good friend of mine died as a result of a head injury. She was trail riding, her horse slipped and fell, when he tried to get up, he hit her in the head with his hoof. |

OOHHH I like the sounds of that one. I know if i didn't already have a helmet, I would buy one of the ones with a design on it and then bling it out with crystals...... |

| I always wear a helmet. I started english so it has always been wear a helmet every time since I started. Kinda mixed in the circuits around here in barrel/poles some wear a helmet some don't but I would say its nearly 50:50. Some even wear the safety vests they wear in eventing/jumping. Your brain IS who you are...its not just life and death an accident could change who you are. |

| I just wanted to say that it is encouraging to see a 3 page topic where nearly every one replying is wearing a helmet or seriously considering it.
I totally agree about being a little self conscious at the jackpots when you're the only one or one of a few wearing them. This is encouraging! |

Location: Bandera, TX | batgirl1 - 2014-02-07 11:59 AM I do. Troxel and Tipperary. I have been running barrels for over 50 years. I am a WPRA gold card member and am probably the only one in a helmet at the rodeos. I used to be more vain and would never think of wearing one. Had a bad accident a couple of years ago and have worn one since. I am also very involved in racing and of course the jockeys all wear them and in the English world, they all wear them, and I thought, are barrel racers just that stupid? I decided that I was that stupid so I wised up.
There will be at least 3 girls running in the San Angelo slack wearing a helmet out of the 282.
I love yes, love wearing mine. Much easier than messing with my hat.
I start all my colts and like to ride by myself so they afford me a little "stupid" moment leeway.
I wear a helmet for all the other "dangerous" activities I love to do so it wasn't a big jump for me. I've been hurt more times riding than Fire Fighting, ski racing or even sky diving. |

Always remember, you are riding for yourself, not everyone else. |

Location: Utah | I plan on wearing one. I've been stuffing education into my head this past year and have a few more to go, I don't want to damage that part of my body. Accidents can happen and since Murphy stalks me all the time, I'd rather be safe than sorry. |

| I just started wearing one. I had to be taken flight for life after fracturing my skull this last fall from a freak accident. I wear one not only for my safety, but for that fact I would never want to put my family and friends through that again. I bought a Troxel, so far so good :) |

| My kids and I always wear a helmet. We have a combination of Troxels and Ovations.
I've worn a helmet since I was a kid .. I know for a fact that while I was preggers with my middle kid, my helmet saved me and my son's life. We were just standing in a creek visiting, when my horse slipped on a rock, went down and came up with her foot on my head, underwater. I am positive that it would not have had a good outcome without my helmet.
I wish more adults would wear helmets and I REALLY wish more adults would make their kids' wear helmets. I do not understand taking that kind of risk with a kid's future. We make our kids wear helmets to play football, ride a bike, 4 Wheel ... just don't understand how some can ignore the data on the long term consequences of multiple concussions.
Just seems like a minor inconvenience ... but could be life saving... |

| I have ridden all my life mostly without a helmet....started wearing a helmet when my daughter questioned me why I make her wear one and I dont wear one....hmm....then I started working in the ER...saw so many head injuries from horse related accidents I saw what it did to the families....I dont wear one just to protect my head I wear one to protect my family from devastation .....those families loose loved ones or they eventually go to a nursing home and live out the rest of their days having someone care for them....it is a huge burden on the family left to care for you....think of that!!!!....Ooh I can tell you somethings about comments made to me about wearing a helmet....you would not believe .....people are so rude and I dont think they will ever change.....

Yep. No one has ever been rude to me about wearing a helmet, but it wouldn't bother me if they were.
What sucks is when my kid just wants to ride around with the other kids and they make fun of him because he is the only one in a helmet. Breaks my heart because he is such a kind kid and just wants to make friends, but I am not changing my mind on the helmet. |
