I told my husband before it started that I thought the could have chosen better for the exemption. That it should be someone who was out there winning. That it should at least be someone who has a shot at placing, not just a recognizable name. Boy did I stick my foot in my mouth! I just don't understand the people with your frame of mind on the choice for the exemption. She's a household name, she's proven herself year after year. Not only a recognizable name that drew tons of people but she's also a hell of a hand. Plus I think the whole point of the exemption part is that they bring someone in. I agree Charmayne blew me away. Ote Berry in the steer wrestling was pretty cool too. Ote gave me goosebumps! What determination on his face! If that dang steer hadn't hung a leg he sure as heck could have been in the top 4. Dean Gorsuch even said - Ote was giving them all a lesson in how it needs to be done! I would love to see that man get the itch to compete again.
That was awesome! To be honest, I wasn't sure how his get off would be without him jumping a steer in years... but wow that was amazing!! I was screaming at the TV, I thought he was about to slam one down!! Stupid hung leg..... |

Ote had gone to a qualifier before he got the exemption. I saw it on the American facebook page. I think he did great. |

Hmm, I did not know that! I know everytime he was interviewed they kept asking if he'd jumped a steer yet and he said no... He was just doing ground work... but regardless, he looked fantastic!! |

Loved watching her! I like the idea of maybe bringing in a NHSRA winner for an exemption in each event, what an AWESOME opportunity for a HS kid?!
Kirstie Peterson would also be an AWESOME one to watch! |

| I know the organizers said one of the criteria for being an exemption was you needed to be a world champion. |

I would rather see Kelly Kaminski if being a World Champ is a criteria. But having that as part of the exemption really limits them in the barrel racing since Charmayne has as many World titles as she does.
I do find it funny that they consider the qualifiers "underdog's". Especially in the barrels. Look at everything Happy and Robin have won. They can hardly be considered "underdog's" IMHO. |

I had heard the same thing that he hadn't jumped a steer so maybe there was a late qualifier after the interviews we heard? Either way he did a hell of a job and no way in heck did he look like he'd had so many years off. True Champion! |

How strict is the world champion criteria? World champ in PRCA/WPRA? Or could it be IPRA, BFA, NBHA, BBR, etc? Or how about NFR average winners? |

Loved watching her run. She will always be one of my heroes. I don't think anyone will ever come close to touching the record number of championships she won.....on a bronc that she trained as a kid. Then to buy Cruiser at the sale barn and make a champion out of him too. Amazing. I've watched that run over and over. She barely got that first, Grasshopper ran as technically correct of a pattern as there is. Would love to see her crack back out. |

Location: Oklahoma | SHARON SMITH!!!!!! Her and her amazing horse, that she trained, Speed Money (affectionately known as Bumper) were a force to be reckoned with before his tragic untimely passing. She qualified for the NFR numerous times, shattered arena records at Lazy E and other arenas, won rookie of the year, won countless futurities and she won the Calgary Stampede! Her name didn't stay out there because she decided to start a family after losing Bumper, but the girl can train and ride the hair off a horse! |

I had chills. I ran into her in the bathroom at a restaurant after the rodeo and I couldn't help but gush about how nice Grasshopper was. I was like a jr high girl talking to Justin Beiber! She was really nice and she was really proud of him, she smiled so big when she talked about him. It made my weekend That would be me lol, chasing her to the bathroom and asking her questions while she tried to pee lol....poor girl......
ummm, hey Charmayne can I get a picture with you here in the john???
and, can I borrow Grasshopper?
and........and.......and........
Bahaha!! Okay, I do have to admit something...my husband went to the bathroom first and when he came back to the table he said "I think I just saw Charmayne headed to the bathroom". I hopped out of my chair and scooted over there as fast as I could go! At least for her sake when I opened the door she was washing her hands so I didn't stand outside the stalls waiting to pounce LOL. And I did stop myself from asking "is that your Bloomer out front?? Can I go pet Grasshopper?" I think it's so awesome that my husband recognized who she was, I told him he deserves husband of the year. He wasn't a horse person until we got married (only 5 years ago)and he doesn't seem too interested in barrels. We sat still on the freeway for 2 hours yesterday because of the ice in TX and it took us 10 hours to get home (should've been 6) but it was still the best trip ever because I got to stalk/meet Charmayne. |

Location: Displaced Iowegian | IMO, it would be very hard to find a bigger draw than Charmayne (from "past" champions).....even people who aren't interested in rodeo know her and her name for championships. This year, the BBR was allowed to add an exemption to the qualifiers and they chose "their" champion. I think it would be neat to add the current High School Rodeo Champion as an exemption. |

| So many viable options for exemptions. I'd almost rather see a few more exemptions and maybe only last years top five?
Not sure how you could get a bigger name than Charmayne but if you did look back at the most recent one to rack up multiple championships and really dominate it would have to be Kristi.
The other thing to wonder about in all the events is how many were asked and said no for whatever reasons? Maybe banged up, just done with it or .... It was an amazing event regardless and there were just so many great competitors that we'd see a smoking run and it wouldn't even be close to the lead. Bravo RFD. |
