I am also a huge fan of anything Peppy San, Peponita, Peppy San Badger (Paddys Irish Whiskey is a son of Peppy San Badger).
Doc's Oak, Docs Hickory, and Miss N Cash.
I've had several really nice cutting bred barrel horses in the past. Most recently I've switched over to race breeding because they seem to sell better (for me) but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for a cow horse. To me the biggest debate about the most influential barrel horse sire in the north would be, is it Docs Jack Frost, his son Sun Frost or his g-son Frenchmans Guy.
We have a 5 year old by a Real Gun son and so far she is super easy to get along with, trainable and talented. We really like watching the Playguns work, the Freckles Playboy in the pedigrees seem to transfer to the barrels pretty well.
To me its Docs Jack Frost. He doesn't get a lot of credit IMO. Everyone looks beyond him but he was the start to a huge line of great horses in the north. I'm like Amy. I have a huge soft spot in my heart for those old lines.

For me, Docs Jack Frost is a "What Could Have Been" kind of story. Stanley Johnston sold him to a syndicate in the early 80's---if he had lived out his whole life under Johnstons care, with the mare power he had, the sky could have been the limit. He is still a great one but I think he could have even been bigger.

One of those woulda coulda shoulda type deals. Hind sight is 20/20 and yes he could have made a much bigger impact. I'm proud to have him on many of my horses papers.

Location: Oklahoma | I grew up riding cow or ranch bred horses but somewhere along the line, got away from them. Well, I'm back. I just lost a 5 year old who was Blue Valentine on top and Driftwood (Drifts Chip) on bottom. He reminded me why I love that type of horse. I just bought a 3 year old to start who is Dash For Perks and Sunfrost on top and Freckles Playboy, Doc Bar (Docs Last Chance) and King Glo on bottom. After just a handful of rides, I love him. Very smart, trainable, quick footed and willing. I'm excited to see what he will be.

| I am going to say that I had a Peptoboonsmal grandgit-was a good horse, but was SLOW and took a while to come on.
Her heart was not really with running, but boy did she LOVE to turn. If I knew anything about cows I would have made her a cutter because I feel like she really had a natural ability for that.
I probably would not go for another Peptoboonsmal, but would go for a Reminic or Peppy San Badger. I had some luck with those cow lines with my first barrel horse. She ended up being a great youth/beginner barrel horse and that was what we sold her as.

| Love my 3 year old filly by Bucks Hancock Dude. Bought her six months ago, and everything about her has impressed me. She is so calm and patient. Knowing that I am going to saddle and work her past a sweat, she will still run from the front pasture when she sees me at the gate with her halter. Will she make a great barrel horse? Who knows! | |

| The Gelding im running now is all cow
On the top he is a grandson of peppysan badger and down the line Doc o'lena
the mare is all Foundation, on her papers she has King and Wimpy, and just off her papers one generation she has Leo
He is a pretty cool horse, Gritty, But can be on the lazy side. But I also own his Full Brother and he is the Complete opposite, Im just getting him going and he is alot of work tho, but once it all comes together he should finish out really cool!
They definatly eat up the barrels! I have a harder time getting them by them than running past!

I avoid hancock bred horses. I'm breeding my mare to a peptoboonsmal bred stallion on the time side and he goes back to lady bugs moon on the bottom. I'm very excited!!! Just out of curosity, why do you stay away from Hancock bred horses?
Genunine Doc and Docs Superstar Bar horses have proven to be good ones. When I had a 3 year old hancock bred filly attempt to kill me, and she broke the trainers arm....I've always been leery about them, but I wouldn't pass one by if it was good looking and super broke Well I can understand you being leery now! They are really tough and gritty horses. I think that's what makes the good ones good. Some of the toughest horses we've had in the NW go back to Hancock.
But don't get me wrong.....my jaw will still drop for hancock bred horse if they are shapey and a roan!!!

I just bought him to resell, but I'm liking him so much, I think he may have to stay at the Guinn house for awhile. www.allbreedpedigree.com/rafter+jet+jud
lol.... Just cause I can, I had to quote this... ;) Welcome to the other side DG!
