If you bring a stud to a barrel race you should be able to handle him. Flame away. Yeah, I don't walk around the warm up pen checking for man parts. I try to give space to everyone because I don't like getting kicked, but in crowded situations, crap happens sometimes. I have sat on mares next to studs many times without having any idea until the stud rider told me. It's hard to tell a lot of times without getting under them and *looking*.
Do you prefer your man parts fully exposed, or tucked away neatly? Do they still make jock straps for horses? |

If your not sure how he is going to act then take him to a smaller show first and see how he acts...you worry about keeping him safe and keep your distance! You cannot expect people to give you space...people just simply don't care anymore so you have to worry about yourself and your horse. How about the ones that turn their studs loose to graze at the jackpot? Seriously?! Several years ago I had taken my futurity horse to a local jackpot to exhibition. She was in heat and tied to my trailer. All of the sudden I heard a bunch of squealing and commotion at my trailer. My husband and I ran around our rig to see what was going on and this lady's stud was ON MY MARE BREEDING HER, my expensive Caldwell saddle was on my mare. She was parked all the way across the parking area from us but she'd just turned him loose to graze after her run. All the lady said was she never thought he'd do that. WTH? He's a stud and he has balls. And my mare was in heat. She laughed about it but I was piffed. I had to lutalyse my mare 2 weeks after the incident just in case. Fortunatley neither my mare nor my saddle were hurt.
ETA: I hauled 2 studs for 10 years. I usually had mine hobbled and tied to my trailer both. One of my best rodeo horses was a stud, he spent lots of nights in a hotwire pen next to my trailer when I was hauling him a lot, never a problem.
I'd never have dreamed of ever letting them loose to graze in a parking lot.
My yellow stud had a knack of untying himself from my trailer, thus he was tied with 2 ropes and hobbled just in case. At shows with tight parking spaces he'd stay on the trailer if I wasn't running him or I'd buy a stall to put him in.
Dear Lord....I'd love to know who the idiot was that did that. |

He was right next to my mare and not misbehaving at all.... he would rather eat than even care about a mare. He was not tied near another horse and the horses that got lose and came to him were not parked near us. My horse was not making any noise, rocking the trailer or anything until he was "visited". My mare was having more fits about the strange horses than he was. It;'s irresponsible for anyone to not make sure their horses are where they should be. If my horse had been making a scene he would have either been in the trailer or at home. I've been rodeoing for about 40 years and each year gets worse and worse with people not taking responsibility for their own. |

OMG!! You really can't fix stupid. I was annoyed last weekend that some lady thought I was going to let her horse drink out of my water bucket while I was filling it to carry back to my trailer. |

You betcha---we go to have fun and wind down and relax with friends. Hauling a stud is neither relaxing or fun---I do respect the people that have done it and done it well, it is just not for me. We have two studs, one has never been off the farm since we bought him and the other has been a handful of times back when he was being broke. |

It was a question, as you said you gelded him for the reason you didn't want him to get hurt. If he was tied to the trailer, and not in a stall, I don't see the difference of being tied outside versus tied in the trailer, except other horses cannot get to him in the trailer. |

My friend and I had parked way off by ourselves to keep the stud away from everyone else. A lady with a gelding parked on top of us and while I was putting my electric fence up on the other side of my trailer, my stud (who was hobbled) untied himself like he tends to do (after that he got tied with 2 lead ropes) and was grazing right next to my rig. Which happened to be then right next to the lady with the gelding that parked less than 10' from me. Even though there are acres to park in there that had no other rigs. My stud was not running around or causing problems in any way, but she got on BHW and made up a huge story how he was hopping all over the parking area like a lunatic and was a ball of raging hormones. Which some other BB's were there when it was happening and he was eating grass---again--hobbled and by my trailer--saw the post and took up for me on here. I caught and tied him up ASAP with 2 ropes then, put up my hot wire and he was fine. The lady that started all the crap on here with me never responded when the rest of the story came out LOL. Guess it wasn't enough drama to hear what the REAL story was there.  Yes the main reason I have no desire to haul a stud again is because of other peoples stupidity. My mares are much worse to haul than either of my studs ever were but of course no one cares or thinks anything of it when it's a mare.

| I don't own a stud nor do I ever want to! Lol! But I used to ride a bunch of them when I rode cutting horses. Cutters leave everything a stud!! Lol!! U learn to work around them and u figure out the ones that r bad and the ones that aren't. We had one that at a show u had to leave him in the trailer because he would untie himself and could run FAST with hobbles and would still try to breed anything, mare or whatever!! I hated that stupid horse. He was even the kind just leading him u had to have eyes in the back of ur head because he might try to paw u! But then we had 25 others that were peaches to be around and u could do whatever wherever and whenever u wanted to with them.
As far as barrel races I ride two mares so I always check, and I always just keep a respectable distance just in case. Haha. If for no other reason my girls might b ****y some day and I would feel horrable if they kicked someone's horse!! They never have even attempted before but u know how is girls might get when we r having a crabby moment!! Lol!!

I raised him from four months old and raised a lot of awesome horses by him. Once while at a big timed event jackpot I had made my run and had tied my stud back at the trailer along with his rope horse buddy mare. I went out to check on him to find him gone. I looked around and saw a man holding him behind his mare trying to get him to breed her. The mare was in heat very heavily and my stud was just standing there. I confronted the man and he knew exactly how mad I was within a few minutes. I took my horse from him and led him back to my trailer and was on my way back to him when he was trying to get his mare loaded and get "out of Dodge" before I got back. He got some more "politically incorrect" comments and I never saw him again. Little did he know that my stud would not even dare to approach a mare with a halter on. He would only breed a mare in my breeding area at home or in my pasture (with my own mares ) with no halter on. He was a show horse, roping horse and barrel horse that was one of those you could do anything with and in the 30 years I had him he never ever even cocked an ear wrong. I was with him when he died and still wish I had another one like him but I also have to kind of chuckle every time I think of that guy getting frustrated when my "Chubby" was just standing there and refusing to breed his mare. I know that he was one in a million and I would never expect that of another one.

I remember the first time I saw Pablo at Hawley. I didn't realize he was a stud or who he belonged to. I just thought he seemed like a good looking cool horse laying down all chilled out next to the trailer with that hotwire around him, amongst all the commotion of the rodeo. He was mellow and lazy looking.......and then you got on his back and turned him into a fire breathing dragon! I think you won that rodeo. |

| I've hauled a stud for the last 8 years. He's great to haul and be around but I always have to be on guard and aware of my surroundings. I've hauled him with another stud, mares and geldings. One rodeo trip we had 2 studs, 2 geldings, 3 mares and one was in heat. Both studs were on their best behavior. He's 20 this year and still running awesome, but I'm seriously thinking of retiring him. Even though he acts like a gelding most of the time, it's exhausting hauling a stud. We've always had a stud and I was just telling my husband the other day, I don't think I ever want another one after mine passes. Just too much work. |

Yep, that was Pablo. In the mud at Hawley. His favorite ground conditions. The trashier the better for him. Sure miss running him. But even as nice as he was to haul and run, I don't miss hauling a stud.  |

I have a really good stud but I haven't taken him anywhere since I have bred him and people don't know how to give you room and they like to run into you lol.. So how do you control their stuffiness for a lack of words.... Do you use Vicks in their nose , give them hormones??? What do you do?!?! Get him socialized at home before you attempt to take him to a race. If he is really good you would hate to have him get hurt because no one would give you room
I agree, socialize him more at home. get some people to ride with you at home, or haul to a small practice with only him, so you know what to expect before committing to an all day show. |
