I get one every year. It's not a big deal and I have not gotten the flu on the years I have taken it thus far. It is required by my employer and they pay for it, so I just get the vaccine every year.

Already got mine and my employer paid for it. My shot covers 4 different strains of the flu. I get one every year and have had the flu one time since getting the shots. I can tell you that having had the flu when I didn't get a shot was 100X worse than when I got the flu after taking the shot. I will continue to get them.

rachellyn80 - 2014-10-27 8:46 AM  This is the first time I've ever taken one.  Our babies Neonatologist recommended that we all get one this year since we have preemies in the house.  So far they have been incredibly healthy.  I could not forgive myself if they were to get sick from something that we could have easily prevented.
That would be one of very few situations I would actually consider getting one.  It's always risk vs benefit.

We also took the Tdap vaccine before we left the hospital.  There are so many scary things that can alter a babies life when they have a compromised immune system.  We were told that if they contracted RSV in the first year of life they were almost guaranteed to have asthma.  I was able to keep them on breastmilk for four months to do the most I could for them.

I hate all the vaccines, but I'm also very aware of the diseases that are crossing our borders daily.

I have been getting them for years, first when i cared for my dad who,was old and the flu was bad for him. Now i have severe asthma and when it flares up it is bad for me takes me weeks to get over, i also have ra. The flu makes people with health problems very sick. If ypu where to,see me when i am well you would never jnow i have asthma but when i get sick it is bad. i got a bug with a sinus infection, went into bronchitis and it has flared my asthma terrible. Problem is doctors dont see people like me much, i am allergic to 3 antibodics and when i first got sick and it didnot quickly resolve i went to a doc in a box, he undertreated me on purpose he did not believe i would get sicker. Then i went to my pulmonary doc she gave me meds, and went my o2 sats dropped my friend that is a nurse made me go,to,er and that doc told me nothing wrong but i needed to,followed up with primary care. Called pulmonary next day they told me to, x y z and i did not i am really no better and pulmonary is gone for several days. I will probably end up in hospital. it was a small local hospital, and the doc saw me a total of less than 5 min then2 times he was in my room more worried avout cardiac. Just a,quack. The healthcare system just sucks anymore.

I only got one when I was pregnant. It was only for the baby. My kids are young enough they get enough vaccines, I usually opt out of the flu one for them as well. They are healthy and rarely sick. We did all get the H1N1 flu last year though. It was awful. My son that was 1 at the time didn't seem to get it. It lasted about 2-3 weeks, but all did kick it eventually.

Still not a fan of the flu shot even after having that.

I will not get one.
I almost never get sick.  I work in the school system, so my body comes into contact with LOTS of germs.  I like to let my immune system do it's job naturally, not suppress it.
No need to introduce foreign antibodies into my system when they are already introduced through daily work.
I also play in the dirt, eat without washing my hands (around my horses) etc.  My immune system does a fabulous job.

Never had one, never will. My kids - same. I haven't had the flu in years, don't remember the last time. My kids have never had it.  They have had nearly perfect attendance at school every year. The sickest they've been has been a minor 24 hour bug. My husband on the other hand, sometimes gets the shot at work. Every time he gets the shot he gets sick. They say the shot doesn't cause the flu.....BS.  He missed a week and a half of work after the last shot.

It's not BS it's science.  It cannot give you the flu as it's not a live virus that is replication competent.  It's just not.  BUT a person can get sick after the shot for several reasons.

-They were exposed to the flu virus just before or within 2 weeks after the shot and their body didn't have the chance to build proper immunity
-They were exposed to a strain of the flu virus that was not included in the formulation of the vaccine they recieved
-Their body/immune system did not respond adequately to the vaccine to build proper immunity.  I.E they may have a compromised immune system to begin with.
-They didn't get the flu but rather a respiratory virus of another type

To each their own...I don't begridge anyone the right to choose to get the vaccine or not.  I just don't like myths to be perpetuated about the vaccine itself that are just not true.  It's odd that this myth is perpetuated for the flu vaccine but not for so many other vaccines that are made in the same way using killed or modified attenuated virus.  For example...when have you ever heard folks say that giving their pet the rabis vaccine caused their pet to have rabies?  That too is a killed or midified attenuated virus.

It may not give them the actual flu, but it definitely makes a lot of people sick.

I don't get one.... I don't work in a hospital or around kids.  I'd rather just strengthen my immune system naturally.  I very rarely get sick, eat relatively healthy, and in good shape.  Spend every monent I can outdoors in the fresh air.

IF I had a compromised immune system, or worked in hospital - then I'd most likely get one.  Right now I just don't have a reason to put more chemicals in my body.

DING DING DING!!  What good is the shot if there are only only certain strains that are in the vaccine? You can put that crap in your body, I'm not. If I get sick, oh well.

We are in your same boat. My first son was born at 36 weeks and spent two weeks in the NICU for a heart condition (now fixed with no lasting effects). My husband, both sets of grandparents, and I all got the flu shot plus whatever other shots the neonatologist recommended. He ended up with RSV at 5 months old and had to be hospitalized for four days. He is now two, hasn't been diagnosed with asthma, but DEFINITELY gets a more serious respiratory response to any sort of cold that he gets.

Now we have another little one in the house (2 months), he wasn't premature but is of course still super susceptible to illness. We will all (including toddler) get our flu shots to hopefully cut down any risk that our newest little guy might be exposed to.

How are your little ones?

What good is it??  Well its good for the strains they decide are most likely to be the primary causative agents that season and that they know can formulate a good match for in a vaccine.   Sometimes the forcasts are off...they just make the best decision they can from the data.  You can read about it here if you like:  http://www.cdc.gov/flu/professionals/vaccination/virusqa.htm

We all put "crap" in our bodiues on a daily basis...by choice or just in the course of what we choose to eat/drink/smoke etc.  At least in this case I do so knowing exactly what is in the vaccine....not so much that hot pocket I just ate for lunch.  I didn't bother to read the box.

Here is a good blog post to debunk some myths.  I sincerely hope NONE of you or your family members get sick.  Wether you are in the YES to vaccine group or the No way in Heck group.  It's a personal choice.  I'm just trying to offer some science based facts to counter the anecdotal evidence.

Amen!

There's seriously NOTHING scarier than having little ones in the hospital for any reason. We almost thought about not having another after our first pregnancy went to pot at 28 weeks. He went into heart failure and was completely hydropic. I spent 8 weeks on hospital bed rest in the L&D ICU. But we ended up with a healthy guy at the end. Second pregnancy was totally textbook. Lol.

If they made flu shots when my kids were little bitty, the doctors didn't tell us back then. My kids are grown and never get sick, although my son has bad allergies and asthma but that runs in our family. If I had known about flu shots back then I think we would all have received them, since his asthma was sudden and severe. Having said that, no one in my family has ever had the flu, but we live in a small community and are not around alot of people except at work. I think that works in our favor. My dad has emphesma (?) and he and mom get flu shots and he gets a pneumonia shot when it's due. That shot has helped alot. But I am not getting a flu shot and I probably won't in the future. I eat healthy foods and exercise and my immune system is apparently strong. If I get sick I will stay away from my dad or anyone else until I am no longer sick.
