Location: Central Texas | I could write an entire book on building your own barn. LOL I've been working on mine for 9 months. It's a lot of work but in the end I will come out way cheaper. I have done every bit of the work myself including clearing the land and building the pad. Dug the holes for the post with a small tractor and then finished them out by hand. I have been saving and hoarding materials for close to a year so that I didnt have to come up with all of the money at one time. Mine looks a lot like LRQHS right now except I have a raised center aisle type of roof and I am only two pieces of metal away from having the roof completed. I debated a long time and watched a lot of videos on how to do the roof. I decided to go ahead and make my own trusses. They weren't as hard as I thought they were going to be.....the hard part was getting them up there. I enlisted the help of a couple friends and discovered these giant rubber squeeze clamps that held them in place until we could get them lined up and nailed. (I did invest in a nail gun) We have a couple of metal manufacturers close to me and I was able to get R panels at a 1.00 a linear foot. I discovered that most of them have a scratch and dent section if you ask. I didn't mind if they had a few scratches....the horses won't care and the only way you could see it was if you were standing on my roof. ( the roof is the only place I'm using the metal...the sides will be wood) I didn't get to have a lot of choices on color but for the cost savings I didn't care. I'm still not done but I am on track to finish right at $5000. That is for 3- 12x12 stalls and a 12x12 feed/tack room and a 12 ft alley. At some point I will sit down and put all my pictures and videos in order. Craigslist has also been helpful. I managed to get an exterior door in great shape for FREE and that will be the door to my feed and tack room. I got a couple of other doors for super cheap and I'm still deciding on how and where I'm going to use them. I'm off for 4 days this weekend and we are supposed to finally have some nice weather so I'm hoping to get the last two sheets on the roof and start getting some walls up! I have never built anything this big in my life (disclaimer: I am not new to power tools and have built a couple small sheds and furniture items) If you have any building knowledge at all you can do it yourself and save a ton of money.

| I was thinking about this thread this morning and saw this local to me add for lean to type shelters/barns. If you're on a serious budget, these type will provide a nice shelter without breaking the bank!

We have one like this. We used telephone poles for the corners and the framed it all in. We also brought out the front of the roof at an angle so there is some hangover. use panels to make runs. Works good only took a weekend to get done. The poles where free, tin was free, and we asked a farmer for some wood out of an old, caved in barn, the only thing we had to buy was a few 2x4's, 2x6's, plywood, and tar paper. I think we spent, maybe $500-$700. |

um... when we lived in Colorado, there was some individuals up the road that would go and get all the pallets from construction sites and stores and they were making a home. |

lol if I built it, it would look like the Weezley's house in Harry Potter lol.

You know I am really considering something like this. I actually wonder if we could then add a front wall and Dutch door so I could close them in during really harsh weather. Make it into something like a little shed row barn :) |

missroselee - 2015-01-13 6:43 PM We got lucky with ours. ย When we bought our current property it had a 30 by 40 foot metal building already on it. ย Full concrete floor. ย I did NOT like the idea of them on concrete, but we made do with it. ย Hubby literally build the entire of the inside, stalls and all, 100 percent by himself. ย From March 29th of 2013 until June 2013 when I came out with the horses. ย And with mats down, the concrete has been a blessing. ย The horses don't seem the least bit bothered by it at all.
ย
ย Wow!! Very lucky!! That's a nice building!! Unfortunately there were only two building on our property when we moved here.ย There's an old corn crib that would cost probably just as much to convert as it would to build new. And there was an old barn on the property. Had concrete blocks about 4-5 ft up and then wood rest of the way. Had a HUGE loft and would have been a nice barn had the prior owners maintained it.ย The roof had a huge hole in it for many years and the rain and elements had rotted the trusses. On top of that, the owners had decided to try and convert it to a body shop and cut through important supporting beams and had things dangeroulsy "rigged up."ย So yet another building that would have required a small fortune to make useable.ย We just recently knocked the barn down this August to make room for a new building. But I suppose that's what ya gotta work with when you purchase a foreclosure home. On the plus side we got a place in the country, by a dirt road (perfect to exercise horses down ), on 5 acres for an incredible price.ย So, silver lining I suppose!
Did you salvage any lumber? Planks and such for the walls and possibility stalls will cut the cost down. Some of the beams that weren't cut? |

yes you can!! That was what we did with my little 2 stall barn when I was growing up! It worked well, just be sure you place the barn correctly for the wind in your area |

No we didn't save any of it. We were going to but most of the wood was very dry rotted. Our corn crib has a bunch of lumber stacked in the bins though so we are hoping to use some of that. |

Location: Texas | I love this thread. Such great ideas. Here's my barn. It was built out of old pallats that my husband found behind the feed store. We didn't buy a single thing. That's right-$0 invested. The stalls all have lazy susans in them so that the horses don't even have to move their feet to turn around. They poop in a special bucket that uses vacuum suction to suck the turds up thru a system of plastic tubes (think Habitrail or the bank drive thru) to move it to an outside manure dumpster. We have skylights and fans too. When we build our next one I am going to leave the palm trees out -every time I go to the barn, my horse wants a drink with a little umbrella in it.
