Location: Oklahoma | I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life in college, and I ended up getting a BS in Animal Science. Not a day goes by I don't wish I had waited to go to school, until i knew what I wanted to do. Oh well. I found a carrer I love in corrections. Currently I am a Sgt at a mens prison (both medium and super-max). I just accepted a job down the nothingness of Texas, working a federal contract, so I'm really looking forward to that opportunity. Corrections isn't for everyone, but personaly, I love it. I've had the opportunity to do some awesome training within our company, CLEET, and several other law enforcment agencys. I also became an instructor.....and I just love playing with munitions, and making people cry....so needless to say...I LOVE MY JOB! |

Have you seen the commercial where the mom comes in to the baby's room and tells the baby she needs to take a sick day? There is one where the dad comes in and does the same thing. Makes me laugh every time I see them. lol It's a commercial for some kind of cold medicine.

| ks_cowgirl - 2015-02-01 12:57 PM I graduated with my BS in Accounting in December. I have already accepted a job with a Big 4 firm as an audit associate starting in August. I will be ensuring that the financial statements that publicly traded companies (and large private) are accurate. Basically, make sure companies are not lying about what they telling the public. Currently, I am studying for my CPA and working part-time for a small local CPA doing taxes. There are lots of opportunities in the accounting field and there are jobs everywhere.
I agree with ks_cowgirl, tons of opportunities in accounting. I have my Bachelors in Business Administration with an Accounting focus, then received my MBA, and finally I got my CPA. I chose to stay in private accounting (accounting for privately held businesses) as opposed to working for an accounting firm; it just suited my personality better :)
I am an accounting manager now, although I'm the youngest person in our department, simply because I have my CPA and my degrees. I get to wear jeans to work every day, and even have the option to work at home if the weather gets yucky.
You can get a job pretty much anywhere with accounting and it will most likely be able to fund your horse habit, and there will always be a demand. |

This is my degree also. I am a Marketing/Promotions Manager in the gaming industry. My degree prepared me well for the field I am in, though I never would have picked this particular atmosphere from a list. I have been here for ten years now and it is always changing and evolving. Sometimes, I work crazy hours but the pay is good. If you are the type of person who easily gets bored doing the same thing day in and day out, this type of work may be for you.

| My career is HR focused. I'm currently working in the recruitment office that focuses on the hiring for the entire civilian workforce, from students to journeyman level candidates. I coordinate job fair logistics, work with candidates and manage the student employment program for both our sites as a part of my duties. Our office is so fun, dynamic and a huge array of personalities. This is literally a dream job, even when I want to pull my hair out because we're doing three distinct hiring pushes within 5 weeks, along with our normal college & journey level recruiting. Best job ever! |

| I am a middle school teacher. I will be done with my masters this fall, and want to get my doctorate. I would love to teach at the university level.
Love my job!
Just this past year I was a state finalist for a major grant from Samsung, ended up being in the top 5 out of 3,400 applications just in Kentucky. But didn't make it as a national finalist. Either way, I feel like I don't work I enjoy what I do so much. |

Location: Kansas | I have a bachelor's degree in Communication - Public Relations and Political Science (double major) and a master's in communication, but I work as the news editor at the weekly newspaper in my hometown so I definitely won't claim to be a big success! lol. I'm currently taking English classes to complete requirements for an alternate route teaching program and hoping to be accepted into the program this March and have a restricted teaching license for grades 6-12 English/language arts in time for the 2015-16 school year. Two years of being in the program and teaching on a restricted licenese are required, then I can graduate from the program with full teaching licensure and later take the praxis tests to become certified in other areas as well. I have substitute taught for the past three years in addition to my newspaper job and discovered that education is what I should have done the first time I went through college, but I may not have been ready for it at age 17. Things have changed and I'm ready to join the rest of my family in the teaching profession.....I just got a 14 year later start than they did LOL. |

You don't need a masters to teach a course? I always thought you needed a minimum of a masters degree if not a doctorate. good to know... I have a BS in Animal Science and really wish I would have went with a more broad, better paying degree... |

I do not teach the grad course alone. It is done under the Department of Lab Animal Medicine and the director. But the subject matter is such that there are those of us that are "experts" in various aspects. (Regulatory, transgenic breeding, microsurgery, handling/sampling techniques are my purview for ex.) So there are a few of us teaching the various sessions.
Yeah a general degree will get your foot in the door at least. But it took time and experience/certification to get to the higher paying job that I have now. |

Location: MT | I have a BA in Environmental Science with a Biology emphasis.....that I have NEVER used! I worked for the federal government as a lead aircraft dispatcher for wildland fires from 2000-2011. In 2011, I got married and took a downgrade to an executive assistant position in order to transfer. Fast forward to November of 2014 when my husband landed a really great position and we moved again. I resigned my position and have started my own business. So far it's been worth taking the leap but it is often scary to follow your dreams! I've made tack items for quite awhile but now am working to make them for my online store. It's definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone. An example was that yesterday I was working on setting up my payment gateway for my merchant account on my website. Totally something I have never done before and have zero expertise in, but I'm bulldozing my way through it!
I guess my advice is that it's never too late to change the career track that you are on!
