Ashton94 - 2015-02-22 9:41 PM What's the point of this? Does money go to the contestants or the American or charity or something?
The one who wins the bid gets his/her business name on the contestants back.  85% of the money goes to OKC Cowboy Hall of Fame, Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Ft. Worth, and another hall of fame... maybe PRCA Hall of Fame.  Then 15 % of the bid goes to the contestant.

Actually it is the other way on the %, 85 to the contestant and 15 to the charities.  Pretty cool!

This is what I thought. No offense to the HOFs, but I just don't see these companies paying all that money to donate. It seems more like a buddy-buddy deal.

Calcuttas are too much fun. I do not think calcuttas are legal in TX. (paramutual wagering) I think all they money is going to three different charities.

The third charity is the Texas ranching and Heritage Foundation

The starting bid on each contestant is $500, the buyers get the back patch with their logo and 2 seats in the VIP section at The American.  also if the contestant wins their event, the buyer get on stage and a Bohlin buckle.  I think it is a great concept, it just may need some fine tuning in the years to come.  I hope other rodeos pick up on it!

This is going too late. It should have started sooner. The bids would be better.

What's a Calcutta?

A Calcutta is when the riders are auctioned off. It is a completely separate pot from the barrel race. Whoever bought the winning rider gets the pot. I don't know if it pays like 1st, 2nd, 3rd or just the winner. This is done in golf a lot. It really is fun. The really good riders usually bring big bucks. Years ago at the Texas Barrel Racing Futurity they were innocently having their Calcutta when they got raided!!! It was one of those cold days in TX when it was raining about three inches per hour. Some friends of mine had to slip out through a crack in the tarps around the building to keep from getting arrested. Scared the crap out of them plus they really got soaked. We still laugh about that one.

Patrick Smith's family. If you have his new video you see them on there. Trevor even owns part of the company I think?
And more proof that behind most every rodeo contestant is a LOT of money.

I was super surprised to see Charmayne only bring $2500! I was about ready to scrape up a few dollars to have my name on her back!

I personally think it went fairly well  for a totally new and untried concept.  It was a great opportunity for some of the total unknowns to get a little bit of sponsorship and additional exposure as well as some contributions to decent endeavors.  I bet it will expand expotentially in the future.
