Location: The edge of no where | rachellyn80 - 2015-03-09 3:14 PM CarpeDiem - 2015-03-09 2:46 PM Well she is entered in Diamonds and Dirt. And has stalls. I would not want to be stalled next to her for anything!! Be interesting to see if she goes! Purpura is not contagious. When traveling and competing you just need to be responsible and do all you can to care for your own horses and prevent what you can, sometimes stuff happens.
This situation is not acceptable no matter the excuse....but, educate yourself on diseases before you overreact. There are plenty of other people that skip out on vaccinations that will be there as well.
Very true. I alwasy disinfect stalls thoroughly before putting horses away.....maybe this will be a tough reminder to all of us to use caution. You might be stabled next to someone whose program has turned out some superstars, but do not let your guard down in assuming that their horses are healthy and things are great at home. |

Location: DUMPING CATS AND PIGS IN TEXAS :) | I read they had strangles first, that's where I was confused. I know what purpura is. I've seen it in humans, just never on a horse that bad. I've seen strangles too, just never that bad. He has a picture of the jaw busted open from the strangles. |

There are plenty of other people that skip out on vaccinations that will be there as well. Purpura is a sequela to strangles so yes, those horses and other horses at her facility are likely infected with Strep equi and contagious. Not all will develop purpura, it is a very case by case immune mediated basis. But what initiated the purpura in the first place (strangles) is most definitely contagious.

I thought they had ran through a fence and had strangles. I, also, wonder about their vaccination status, because that sure is an argument for everyone that says don't vaccinate. Those horses are going through Purpura, way worse than Strangles. You can let Strangles run it's course, Purpura needs treatment. That is an incredibly painful illness.
Those legs are so swollen that they have broken open and are seeping serum and blood. That is intolerable negligence and cruelty. The civil side of this may be expensive, but criminally the charges are not enough for this kind of abuse.
Here's an article that explains it well: http://www.extension.umn.edu/agriculture/horse/health/purpura-hemorrhagica/ Thanks for that. So, the purpura can come from the vaccination and following a case of strangles? Is that how I read it? There is no way that someone could look at that and not realize something needs to be done.......even if it's euthanize.
It has never been fully proven that vaccination for Strangles can put horses at a higher risk for developing purpura but it is highly speculated. Purpura happens when antibody/antigen complexes deposit in the blood vessel walls, causing a vasculitis. |

Location: Where I am happiest | Appearantly her Dad is a horse trader/kill buyer. So there ya go. She was raised not valueing life and the ability to turn a blind eye. No excuse to not contact the owners in the first place so they could decide what course of action to take and there is no excuse to let these horses suffer like that, and that stall, was disgusting filthy! Talk about a h*ll hole. |

Location: TX | In my opinion - I don't care what her side of the story is.. there's no justifying what these poor horses had to go through and what the poor horse that is still alive is going through now. To sit back and watch an animal suffer like this is sickening and unacceptable. She LIED to the owners, who I'm sure would have been more than happy to take these horses to the vet at the first signs of strangles. We are all horse owners and know how easy it is for a horse to catch. But she chose to ignore it and she deserves to suffer the consequences. I pray she never takes in another outside horse and I'm sure she won't be able to show her face for quite a while. |

Location: DUMPING CATS AND PIGS IN TEXAS :) | We keep seeing things like this. What we all need to learn is to inspect the facility before sending, get references, frequent videos of your horses if they are off or frequent visits. I feel like the only way to try to protect ourselves is to be aggressive owners and share information on who not to use. It's a shame, but you can't trust anyone anymore. |

| My horse had strangles and pupura and has never had a strangles vaccine. SO vaccination was not the reason for the strangles to be the "bastard" Type and for the purpura to develop.
I am seriously considering vaccinating for strangles this year and I never have. I always practice safe horsemanship. They never graze away from home, always take my own water, use only my buckets and disinfect stalls prior to use.
My horse was at the vets within 18 hours of becoming sick and he stayed for 3 weeks. He would have been there sooner, but my kids feed in the morning and he came in and ate. At dinner time, he nibbled his food and had swollen legs and of course a 105 fever.

There was someone that posted a product you mix with water and spray the stalls down to sanitize, it was an alternative to using bleach and about $50 a gallon but you got a lot of uses out of that. For the life of me I cannot remember the product name. |

Completely agree with this. I'd sure as heck want to know if someone had done something like this before sending one of mine to them. |

We move from track to track all the time and just use a 20% bleach solution in a sprayer. If there is caked poop on the walls we will scrub it off then bleach. Not really sure how much it helps because we still get sick horses, of course the track is kinda like horsey kindergarten and they get exposed to everything. |
