Location: Texas | fulltiltfilly - 2015-03-26 1:43 PM I have been trying to eat clean and I joined a fitness class over the winter. I will admit, it's hard trying to eat clean all the time. It requires a lot of planning and it's expensive. Sometimes I just don't want to think about food.....it's tiring...
I struggle with this too. Crap food is convenient and always planning meals can be exhausting.
What keeps me on track is routine. I've developed menus with grocery lists and recipes for a couple months. Then I just keep reusing them until I want to change it up.
I also get the magazine called Clean Eating. I LOVE IT. Great recipes, meal plans, menus, shopping lists, and good info. Makes it much easier than clean eating used to be. |

I am going to check out that magazine.....and try the meal plans like you suggested. Anything to make it a bit easier..... |

JK, although I do enjoy some wine every now and then. I'm not just starting this for show season, but I try to eat "basic" most of the time. Fruit, veggies, lean meats, breads. I cut out processed stuff, (I do miss doritos occasionally lol). I mean, there's the occasional processed thing- chocolate, or french fries etc. here and there, but for the most part I stick to the basics. That makes clean eating happen naturally for the most part & keeps it cheaper :) try to drink a lot of water & not much soda. I let exercise take care of itself- between work, horses and life in general I'm pretty active and I add in steps everywhere I can, (AKA I go out of my way to be the opposite of lazy. Ever. LOL)
I'm not a nutritionist, I just kind of "fell into" this way of eating a few years back, living somewhere else, that was just the way of life, health was better, (even my skin looked noticeably better), it was simpler and just seemed to make sense!

Location: Arkansas | I started the 21 day fix by beach body with help and encouragement from a Facebook group. I had been eating primarily healthy for most of my life, but have done some modifying. I didn't start to necessarily lose weight but to be in better overall health (I have type 1 diabetes) and tone up. Since starting I have lost 10 pounds and the workouts have gotten easier. Once I'm done with the 21 day fix I plan on transitioning to a different work out. |

Location: Alberta | Fairweather - 2015-03-25 12:36 PM I have spent a lot of years focusing on diets and fitness thinking I had to be a certain size. I'm not driving myself crazy with that any more.
I'm not cutting out food with the exception of those things that effect my breathing and joints, and just focus on eating more real food, and more veggies.
As far as working out, I'm focusing on getting stronger and riding better and not worrying what my pant size is. I'm not spending a ton of time on it either - I already get up at 4am. I do a few kettle bell exercises (there's a blog post on my Cowgirls With Curves site) three days a week and some stretches and core two days a week for about 10 min max.
This.....
I enjoy going to the gym, but since the year started its not been something I do. I'm focusing on keeping my eating in check and I have a treadmill and some free weights & kettle ball at home I use.
I think the KEY to food and fitness is find what you like and can see yourself maintaining AND to NOT ABSOLUTELY Do NOT compare yourself to someone else. As Fairweather said do what feels right...not everyone has to become a gym rat to be fit!
*fitness classes (get a buddy to come with) *walking on your lunch break or after work (start a group...bring the kids)

| No doubt when ya barrel race, can't be a gym rat. I get my workouts in the morning. 30 minutes at least every day with adding treadmill or abs again at night or at lunch. Gotta exercise the ponies too! So no gym rat here! |

| I think a lot of folks feel that they ride alot, or do so many chores, that a specific workout routine is not necessary. Although you may be very active and work harder than the average person, as a serious competitor itβs important that you use your muscles specifically during your daily routine. You need a purposeful fitness and exercise program beyond your regular riding and chores because those activities do not engage all the muscles in your body that fire during a competitive run.
By doing certain exercises consistently to tone, tighten and strengthen your core, build and strengthen the muscles in your legs and arms, you are setting yourself up to be able to react quicker and in better time with your horse. Normal day to day riding and chores are simply not enough. |

I so agree with this for riding purposes! If you're just trying to be healthy & maintain baseline health an active lifestyle may be perfectly adequate, but to be a top performer we have to work out like any other athlete, just like we ask from our horses. |

Location: Bandera, TX | A year ago, I went from riding three horses daily to only riding one, due to two of them getting hurt. Instead of going to 2 races per months, I went to a total of 6 all of last year. My job is extremely stressful, and all I have been doing for the past year was feel sorry for myself… and sit around and eat bon-bons…. I knew I gained weight as the jeans got a bit snug… I had to visit with some clients earlier this month and my slacks would not button…. Oooops…. Wake-up-call….
Then I watched the “Racer’s Edge” episode on fitness and found it actually quite motivating. It was/is time to get in shape again, especially since one of my crippled horses just got cleared to start riding again (Yay!). In the past I have had really good results with the “30 Day Shred” workout video. I’m back on it and going on a week. I can feel my body tightening up already and getting stronger. I feel better and have more energy. |

| I do not get RFD TV but saw the posts about the episode. I love that they are showing that those gals who make it to the top, are in top physical shape as well. They workout! You do not see one of those girls at the NFR who are out o f shape. THey are all fit. So what does that say about what it takes to be at the top? Why bother with the $20,000-$80,000 horse, (or more!), all the other expenses TRYING to win... then totally ignore yourself. No doubt I've fallen off the workout wagon too these last few years. I got so overwhelmed with Dreaming of Three, my every minute was taken up. My jeans and clothes certainly felt this! Like I say, not gonna purchase a Dash Ta Fame filly and forget what my part is. |

| sample MEAL PLAN:
meal1:
3 egg white muffins
16oz coffee - protien powder for flavoring
meal2:
1/2 cup oatmeal
1 cup blueberries
1 cup almond milk
1 tablespoon sugar free fat free cheesecake pudding mix
meal3:
1 turkey muffin
meal4:
1/2 cup brown rice
6oz chicken
1cup broccoli
meal5:
2 boiled eggs
fresh veggies
meal6:
6 oz lean meat of fish (tilapia or salmon)
1.2 avocado
unlimited veggies
3 liters to 1 gallon of water throughout the day.
Its around 1500 calories and gives room for if I need a snack like a handful of almonds and aple or a quick protein shake.
Other then my planned meals I just try to stick to lean meats and veggies. No carbs after 3pm.
Meal prepping helps me stick to this easiest and it saves money. Measure your food out. It helps and you know exactly the amounts you need to buy.
Rule of thumb....try to stick to eating foods closest to their natural state. So no processed crap.
WORKOUTS:
30 minute fasted AM cardio
PM weights:
low weights
20 repetitions
4 sets
30 seconds rest between set
1-2 minute rest between exercises
(saves time and creates a HIIT type workout)
5 exercises per body part
different body part each day ex: monday legs, tuesday arms, wednesday back ect.
Yoga stretching once or twice a week.
A great resource is bodybuilding.com they have FREE workouts AND meal plans. Download their smart phone app and you can follow and track your workouts right their......its amazing and extremely helpful.
If I expect my horse to be an athlete I better expect myself to be one too!

| I just ordered the 21 Day Fix yesterday! Can't wait to get started! I also ordered the PiYo DVDs to try. I love going to workout classes, but it really irritates me to have to rearrange my schedule to work around how the gym schedules classes. I'm all about flexibility! |

| I hear ya! I never liked that when I would try to fit the gym in at lunch, seemed everybody wanted to bs..which cut into my time working out. I prefer doing things on my own schedule too! If you'd like to join our Challenge Group, message me. It starts Monday for 21 Day Fix. |

Also you can win one by giving me an interview as well, as I draw once a month for those. I like to show others what their competition is doing. email me at [email protected] for more info. |
