I don't judge I'm just constantly looking at others tack and saddle choices to see what all is out there. I was never one for bling, but I find the tack sets like Heritage Brand, gorgeous and eye catching. I'd love to have one! (Not to run in. I'd hang that sucker on a wall and stare at it all day every day.)
LOL I have the same problem. A friend of mine bought me a new headstall and breastcollar (not a really expensive one) that has all kinds of bling and fringe and I am in love! So it hasnt left my house! Iv had it since october and keep saying Im gonna use it at the next big race I go to but havent yet. It is really out of character for me to have loud tack so I think I am nervous that I will get just that, JUDGED!
You should never "judge" anyone based on their choices. I think thats childish. People like what they like. As long as it is safe for the horse then i dont see a problem. However, if you see me staring at you at a show, Im not judging, I just like to look at other peoples stuff! |

Like others said, the only thing I really don't like seeing is tack that doesn't fit, or could be a safety issue, like very loose back cinches or boots that have bad velcro...I've seen a horse get one boot stuck to another during a run, and luckily the horse stayed very calm, but it could've been a trainwreck..... |

| When I go to a barrel race, I am usually so wrapped up in what I am doing I don't notice other peoples' tack, trailer or anything else. I try to take care of business (mine). There is one girl that will whip your butt around here. Her horses are groomed to perfection, clipped AND she has the most beautiful tack you have ever seen. She wins enough that she can afford whatever she wants. I do notice if she is there or not because it might be time to go home--laughing.
The message here is take care of your business first so you can improve.

Most of the time I keep my opinions to myself though.
I'm sorry but in the barrel racing world to my mind saddle and tack sets are just one more way that people like to 'keep up with the Jones.' Along with trailers, nice horses, etc. I think acknowledging this isn't a heinous thing. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I would never judge someone on their nylon tack or what type of trailer and truck they use and their appearance, that is just awful, you dont know their situation!!! I knew of a little girl that her daddy would haul her horse to our weekend rodeos on a flat bed trailer with wooden rails on the side to keep her horse on so he would not jump off, that little girl had so much pride and she was just happy to be riding with us, this young lady turned into a wonderful horse women and now is a vet. How dare someone judge another person over their use of tack, this may be the only tack they could aford at the time. I used nylon many years back, who cares what someone else uses.. I just dont care what others use, its their life. If I see a bit not sitting right, are something that could cause a accident, I will say something to the person in privacy. Okay got that that off my chest

Location: sunny california | Not really judging but I do advise anyone new to horses to buy one quality leather set of tack even if it is plain leather for working tack then they can get the pretty set for shows. One thing that bothers me is to see someone work so very hard and not have much money to buy tack then get ripped off on cheap bling- set on trash leather. It might be their only set then they use it every day and it falls apart. I kind of don't like to see someone get a very poorly made saddle that does not fit for cheap; however, it is brand new so they get it anyway. I feel bad for the horse that they did not have the sense to buy a decent used saddle for the same money. |

Okay got that that off my chest Well said! I've been wanting to comment on this post and held off, but you said what I wanted to say, so thank you! If we all worried about our own practice, performance and conduct and less about others the world would be a better place. We ALL had to start somewhere, we have ALL made the wrong choices sometimes, and we ALL have different resources. You never know where someone is in their journey in life. Making judgements about others "stuff" is more telling about you, than them.

Location: Idaho | I am not a judgemental person at races unless I think its unsafe, I might suggest to help someone if their gear is set up wrong (bit backwards, etc) but mostly I stick to myself... Have a $800 tack set isnt going to help you win the race, but having a well fitted saddle will... I just smile and wave and wish everyone luck |

| I started out on a paint horse that would rather stand still, neon pink nylon tack with a polka dot saddle pad and neoprene saddle. In a 2 horse trailer pulled by a ford that usually broke down in the parking lot. Alot has changed but alot is still the same. My tack is leather, my horse is faster and I pull a 3 horse steel bp trailer. But the Ford my husband has, does still break down sometimes. Guess some things never change.
I try to help those that dont have the latest and greatest tack. I was there once upon a time and I know how it feels.
No I dont judge someone based on tack. I judge them on the person they are. Some of the nicest people I have met havent had the newest stuff and some of the snobbiest, most hateful ones are always riding in the newest most expensive stuff. |

Many years ago I had a good friend (a guy) who was pretty tough to beat. He had what I thought was the ugliest horse. He went to a different event from our normal barrel races and a bunch of girls came up to him asking what his horse could do. He told them it was the horse his dad used to plow their little garden. He did look the part. After he beat the socks off all the girls, they came back and told him he had lied to them. He thought the whole situation was pretty funny. I think about that once in awhile and always chuckle. |

| I keep coming back to this thread, and I have been trying to just leave it alone. I just failed. Nobody ever told me Bender was uncool when I ran him in his five dollar nylon headstall. It eve had a knot tied in it to make it fit right. Put it on him to try it, he won and kept winning. I wasn't going to change a thing. I won more $$ in that rig on more horses than anything else I own. Retired the headstall when a buckle broke, but I still have it. Who knew people were judging me? The pictured run, he outran Mary and Fred the year she won the world, but his rider choked and pulled him into the first barrel. That was when I decided I didn't have what it takes to play with the big girls. It is my opinion the OP has too much spare time. I am going to go grab a video in a minute of him with a good rider. This was the fastest run of a two day rodeo...same crappy nylon headstall http://vid212.photobucket.com/albums/cc118/kmcsunshine/Videos/Untitled.mp4

| When I picked up my newest horse from the trainer, she loaned me the bit she wants me to use till the one I purchased arrived, guess what-it's on a nylon headstall. I didn't think twice about it, I put that sucker on and enjoyed my horse. This gal can afford anything and has won more and done more with horses in several disciplines then most of us could even dream of doing. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I still have my nylon headstall/bit and breastcollar that I used on my mare, shes been dead for about 15 years now and it still sits with her bit on it, dont use it on anybody else it was hers.. And got other nylon breastcollars and headstalls from the good old days still sitting in my tackroom. I dont think I was being judged over useing them, I got compliments on mine they were on the fancy side back in the day. In fact these were the Martha Josey line, they had leather cheek pieces and nylon on the top part I think, are could be the other way around. But they were pretty cool looking, got to check them out tomorrow, lol.. |
