NJJ - 2016-07-30 10:48 AM Β We have had sorrels, roans (bay and red), bays, palominos, grays (even flea bitten), duns, buckskins, no wwhite, with white, etc, etc, etcβ¦.so I guess you would say that color doesnβt mean much to usβ¦.if they are winners, I could care less if they were blue, green, had three eyes or two tailsβ¦..If you have passed up a horse primarily because of color, chances are you have passed up a winner some where down the lineβ¦β¦.. Totally agree here, I dont care what color a horse is as long as I like it or it takes care of you and does its job, I would never pass one up because of its color.Β
Edit to add; I agree with the OP, I think that this is a silly thread too.Β
I'm always stunned at people who will pass up a colt that is otherwise a perfect fit because it is not the right color. Like color ever shut off the electric eye.
I think it is kind of an interesting thread. If you are a breeder, it is always interesting to hear people's answers to a question like this. Not that I think color is important in a barrel horse, but it affects the click through rate on ads! And in 2016, you can't sell 'em if you can't get people to click.
I love Paints and Appies both. I've ridden some good ones of both breeds. But then in solids I love a plain old brown horse. Go figure.
We rarely buy a sorrel because they are harder to sell. My Dad keeps reminding me that he can remember when sorrels were the hot color. It was in the 1940's.
And I have always said I wouldn't buy a gray but we could breed a gray mare to our QH or TB studs so maybe I would now. Still wouldn't buy a gray stud though, we have too many Paint mares and I don't care for white horses with white spots . . . . |

The colors that really catch my eye is a bay or sorrel, if they have good conformation, nice hip, nice head and neck that ties into their shoulder real nice. Ooooo I cant keeps my eyes off a good looking sorrel or bay. But I like any color that has the right conformation.. But Who can pass up a good looking dark Copper colored sorrel.. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | I tend to agree on the cremello thing. Other ones I am careful of but not an absolute no on. Pale horses are just huge cancer risks. I am not a huge yellow horse fan. I love DARK horses, brown, black, grulla, blue roan. |

^^^Also this...and include the medicine hat paints in that category for me.
I actually love a nice sorrel and would love to have one again!Β
This too. I'm not a fan of the pink skin at all so cremello, certain paints, etc are not usually in the question. I'm boarding a cremello at my place right now and I'm not a fan. I dont care otherwise... A good horse is a good horse. |

Location: West Texas | Every color can be ugly or can be beautiful, depending on the horse that is wearing it. I like pretty horses. I like all colors when it's on the right horse. I am the least fan of sorrels in general, but I figure I would be a fool to be color specific instead of merit based. There are some flat gorgeous sorrels out there too. |

BLACK! I had a black mare and she would bleach out so bad in the summer. It made her look so unhealthy. It was the ugliest color. I will never own another black horse. Ever.Β
Both my horses are dark brown and I don't mind at all that they bleach out. I get black in the winter and then lighter in the summer. My tb almost looks buckskin. I will say I like my tb darker but my quarter horse looks nice either way. She bleaches out more in the flanks and my tb bleaches all over. |

I was thinking about this thread this afternoon when I went to the pasture to check fish. My black mare is now the prettiest grulla!!! I feel I get "pretty" in all 4 seasons. . . . |

Location: South Central Florida | I have favorite colors and I think I have owned about them all. If a horse is winning, I don't care what color it is. If I had to pick my least likely it would be Gray. Every single gray horse I have known has had melanoma. I realize it is really not the same as when people get melanoma, but I know 1 that lost a beautiful gray recently and the cause was an internal melanoma broke loose and caused rapid blood loss internally and the horse passed away. BUT with that said, if I had a chance on a winning gray and I had the money, I would at least look and think about it. |

Location: South Central Florida | Okay, thought of another. A paint with a lot of white. Two have had terrible skin problems. Sun burn, Scratches, skin cancer, just lots of skin issues. Probally a South Florida issue, but I don't think you could talk me into an pink skinned horse again even if it was winning. |

Seriously.
These horses are friendly and never so much as give the stink-eye to another horse, and a palomino comes around and they just turn into monsters. When I was a kid, I had my little pony try to give both back barrels to a palomino! |

| I love my sorrels! Chestnuts are possibly my fav! I usually pass on ads that are paint, app, or cremello because I would never buy a prospect that color. I would buy anything for the right price no matter the color, but in general I enjoy buying stuff that nobody else "wants." I love palominos and buckskins but all of them Iv owned were either crazy or had problems staying sound. So I pass on those, but they are pretty! |

LOL, I feel that same way about Palomino's .... I usually don't care what color they are, how much white or?? that they have. I'm a sucker for a Red horse that's for sure. But, I really don't have a preference. What I've noticed the most is the Palomino's, Buckskin's etc are usually brats because they were bought for color vs brains. |

Location: Northwest Florida | I guess I don't have a color I won't buy. Never thought of it, but I wouldn't turn down a good horse based on coat color alone. I certainly have preferences, but I've got two red geldings in my back yard right now which is probably my least favorite color, but they're two of the best horses I've ever owned! |

| I recently was horse shopping. Told a good friend my criteria: no geldings, no sorrels, and nothing with less than 90 days on it. Guess what I bought? A sorrel gelding with 30 days on him! Moral of the story never say never!

Location: Southeast Louisiana | I'm in the "Good horse is never a bad color" club. If all we're talking about is barrel horses, there is not a color I won't buy. Like Tdove said, it depends on the horse that's wearing it. A well put together horse that can clock, nice conformation, is pretty to me regardless of color. |

This just cracks me up! Our purebred Santa Gertrudis cattle HATE any other color or breed of cattle. It is hilarious to watch them run the "inferior animal" away from their feed and hay. They won't even let them join the herd in any capacity. It doesn't matter what color they are - other red colored breeds, Charlois(?), cross breds, whatever. |

| My favorite color is green. If they clock, I think they are BEAUTIFUL. Any color looks good in the winners' picture. |

Location: bring on the heat, NV | Cracking me up! so ill play I will say there is no color I wouldnt buy but I do have colors I judge more than others... Im not a huge fan of tobianos but overos trip my trigger (and I like them either more white or more solid not 50/50). Leopard appys but not the roany appys. Im not a fan of palominos or buckskins and have/had both. Brown, red roan, red dun, claybank/sooty buckskin are my personal oh la las and ... i own not a one. Honestly, my fav color though is whatever is in my corral. Now if you want a giggle there is no way! Period! my husband would allow a double dilute on this place... no reasoning behind it other than color. He also wont bet on a gray at the horse races. |
