I gave my farrier a tip, I told him to pull his pants up or buy longer shirts! I hold my horse and feed him treats so he will stand for trimming. My husband is also my farrier.
That's too funny!!!!
I'm ashamed to say I've never thought about tipping him, but now I will. He puts us on the schedule for the next visit before he leaves the barn, takes good care of my mare that has some issues as well as Dan (37) and his old arthritic legs, and has even come by to check out one of the horses when I couldn't get my vet. Y'all have opened my eyes to something I should have been doing.

Location: TEXAS | I tip sometimes. If my farrier comes out when I'm not home and he has to catch all my horses and turn them back out, I will tip him. I appreciate him doing that for me. But I also pay cash, so I feel like that is a tip (he doesn't have to report it on income tax if he doesn't want to). |

No. I have never had a cheap farrier, they price their work and I pay the price.Β
See this is how I feel about it..... He is setting his price and I pay it. Yes he is good and will always show up by the time I really need him but the check is always there and half the time he fills it out. I couldn't really tell ya what he charges for sure ( I ain't good with keeping track of my money... whole 'nother story lol) I just have a really hard time tipping someone when they are setting the price for their work. If they think they are worth more then they need to raise their prices and if I can afford it then I will pay, if not I will find someone else. But I will most likely find a way to pay as he's really the only one close that I think does a good job besides the jerk (lol) that up and retired on me hehe |

This.^^^^ He is not cheap and gives me sometimes less than 24 hour notice he is coming. I am always on time and hold my horses and make sure he never has to do a bad behaving horse. He is good with the horses and a really good farrier. I feel it balances out. However, if he has a helper with him that does some of the work on my horses, I will tip the helper. |

We also have to haul our horses to our farrier as do a lot of people anymore. He should be tipping us.

Good ones are hard to find and the guy I'm using comes a long way and doesn't see his family all week because of his work. The least that I can do is make it as nice as possible for him. I will also say that the last guy I used lived 10 miles from me and I got charged $25 gas fee. My current guy lives over 2 1/2 hours from me and doesn't charge me a gas fee. Some guys shoot themselves in the foot. |

Location: Phoenix | Β I do not. Β I provide him with a easy to shoe horse, cold water, shade, Popsicles and a mist from the hose on hot days. Β I'm so sick of tipping in certain industries! Β Call me a cheapskate but you should not be tipped to do your job. Β Β

| I don't tip every time: but I catch him on Christmas and his birthday and of course our anniversary (LOL). I have been using him for the last 5 years.
I also tip if we are working on a problem that takes a good bit more time than a regular reset.
Good farriers are hard to find and I don't want to lose this one.

This is what makes sense to me! I dont tip my farrier because he prices his own work and isnt working under another business. There is certainly nothing wrong with tipping, but i feel like if i did it once i would have to do it every time, which would really add up! |

| Yes I tip... Every time... Usually 10%.
I think it is disheartening to read that so many people do not tip. However you keep doing what you are doing so my farrier will stick around. XD |

Why is it disheartening? I honestly don't understand tipping anyone besides a waitress/waiter/bartender.
I do tip my hair lady because I am in a small town and I know it would be hard to get an appointment at that salon if I didn't, but I don't feel like I should have to. My opinion is that she (or anyone one else I'm paying to do a service) can set their own charges to what they need to pay their overhead and earn a living.
The hairdresser having to pay rent to the salon owner is no different than the mechanic paying the mortage on his shop, the plumber paying for his van & tools, the veterinarian paying for their office overhead and student loan payments, etc. Yet you don't tip all of these people. Where would you draw the line if you started tipping everyone who had business overhead to pay? When I had my own chiropractic office my patients didn't tip me. And I didn't expect them to.
As someone else said, why are we tipping people to do their job?
But considering my farrier just fired me, maybe I need to start tipping the new one. Though it is upsetting to think even though I pay promptly at each appointment, have horses caught and waiting for him, have safe horses to work on and keep a standing appointment every six weeks β that I wouldn't be considered a valued client because I didn't tip. |

Location: Oregon | Have had the same farrier for about 8 yrs. He is awesome. Makes my next appt before he leaves. When my old mare was still alive he held her hoof low so as not to bother her arthritis. He is always early and if he happens to be running close to scheduled appt he texts me to let me know. I tip him every single time. I don't want to think about losing him ever. He has tried to give the tip back in the beginning but I refuse. Now he just accepts it and doesn't bother arguing with me. |

Location: Phoenix | I feel like if you own your own business--I don't need to tip. You charge what you need to. But if you're working for someone, (hair salon, delivery driver, nail salon, waitress, masseuse...) then I will tip if you do a good job. Providing my shoer with optimal shoeing conditions is enough in my mind. I know he charges more for problem horses so I leave it up to him to tell me what he wants to charge. |

IMO I view a tip as a sign of appreciation.
You provide a service. I will pay you for the service.
But did you do it in a way that went above and beyond my expectations?
If yes, here is a tip to show my appreciation.
I really don't care what your job is. If I feel like you went the extra mile I will tip.
Obviously there is a time and a place to do it. But if it is at all appropriate... I say why the heck not? |

I agree with this. I have a great farrier, but he is quirky and I do cater to him quite a bit.
I do understand that if he goes out, catches the horse, and does it all on his own, I would probably tip. |

My farrier is beyond quirky. I put up with him because he does a great job. I have promised him if he ever shows up on time for an appointment I I'll give him an extra $100 for the day. Β Haven't had to pay up yet. |
