kgraham38 - 2013-11-18 10:59 AM I LOVE my girl. Harper is Catahoula/American Bulldog.  She is 7 months old and 58 pounds.. still growing.

She is definitely head strong and can hold her own. You have to be the alpha with them for sure but she has not shown any aggression. I've had her since she was 2 weeks old.. her mother passed away and we took her in and have had her ever since.

She was the runt. I'll see if I can post a pic of her brother.

I would have another in a heartbeat but Harper will be my love for now. I couldn't ask for a better dog. She truly is a "Mama's Girl". She doesn't quite like listening to her daddy.. LOL. And she has been cool with the horses since day 1 and goes to every show with me.
Ahhhh.  She is built like my Gus.  Who is also a bullcat.   She is very pretty.
Thank you!

Gus has some really nice color! Here's a better picture of Harper's color. She's taller than she looks. How much did Gus end up weighing full grown? (If he's full grown)

Just curious. We've only owned large dogs so I'm not worried about it.

he is a year old now and weighs 78 pounds

BleuIdGrl - 2013-11-19 9:10 PM I havent had a chance to post about my boy, Biggs (in my avatar). He's a CatBull and I would take a bullet for him in heart beat. Best dogs youll ever deal with. I'll make a point to do that tomorrow. He came from a breeder in West Virginia. Wallers Freedom Kennels on facebook. I believe they just had a new litter. Theyre a wonderful family to work with and truly enjoy what theyre doing. If you dont have facebook let me know. I can get theyre number if youre interested.
Thank you!

We think Duke is a Cat mix?  LOL, he could almost be Harper's brother -- we got him from a rescue in Tuscaloosa, AL --- we were told he was an Aussie mix (laughed my arse off when I first saw him in person).  I'm going to try to post his baby picture -- and if I have anything recent saved.  He's about 9 months old & 70 lbs.  Greatest personality but a little devil.

Trying again to post one from today in his cast -- he knocked a vase off a table Sunday & sliced his leg open, cutting through all the ligaments.  Not sure that I'm going to get it to load?

eta:  nevermind -- can't get it resized & a friend just called me that a friend of hers had a pony just wander up in her yard -- right in the middle of the city!

Talk to yall later

I've heard about 80 at full size so that confirms it for me :) She's a runt and may be a little less but we'll see!

Not familiar with Bullcats, but Ruger is two and right at 90 pounds. He is still filling out - hound lean but getting broader through the chest. His littermates aren't as big, and neither was his momma, but his daddy is close. They all actually have to work for a living, so that may play a big factor. Ruger will work, and seems to love whenever is on stock, but his primary job description involves his guarding the couch, bed, and pillow and in general keeping me company. He will also play ball until your arm falls off, but neither a football nor basketball last long - he chomps them flat.

This is an awesome thread - glad to see it still drawing interest! Around here not many are familiar with Catahoulas. Can't tell you how many times I've been asked if Ruger is a pit. I also had one lady literally steer her son away from Ruger (who was about 7 weeks old and zipped up under by coat), saying they were VICIOUS when I responded to his question of what kind of dog he is. Vicious - no. Protective - YES. Even at that, at 7 weeks he wasn't about to go on a rampage LOL.

Loving seeing all the pics and reading the stories.

I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I believe the correct name is CatBull. Thats what the breeder I bought from calls them and thats how they are listed when I do a search.

Just thought I'd jump in on this post seeing as I have a Catahoula too. Most people when asking about Delila ask if she is an 'actual' dog. They're usally pretty surprised when I tell them she is and has the papers to prove it :-) The picture of Delila and my daughter is how I find them just about every morning. Definatly her dog and not mine. Delila will be a year old in January, have no clue how much she weighs, but is pretty big, and is considered a red & gray leopard with brindle trim, with one glass eye and one cracked

SoonerLawyer - 2013-11-18 12:26 PM They use them for hog dogs in our area. That's about the only time I see them. And that's not a real great trait for a pet. The other dogs they use are pits as "catch" dogs.

A dog's job doesn't alway portray how they will be as a pet. Often time when a dog has a job they make a better pet.

dianea - 2013-11-17 6:11 PM Had to come back with a few pics of my pride and joy (and daughter's too LOL). I love seeing everyone's pics and reading about their Cats. I definitely agree with the statement about knowing when to work. Ruger is the biggest momma's boy going, til it's time to go to work. When he gets in the zone, he is all business. His parents are both top catch dogs. I have to admit, I'm too much a chicken to let him do much with cattle (only with a few bunches who I know won't get too hateful). He is fabulous at helping when daughter's yearling filly gets out..I can tell him to get ahead, and he is ON IT. Truly can't say enough good about these dogs, provided you handle them right. They are NOT like most dogs for sure. Totally different mindset. Ours don't really roam - other than my pasture, but if I yell COME HERE...they are booking for me. Ours are shock collar trained - for us that works the best. They know I can get ahold of them, even if I'm not in reach. LOL Love my Ruger to death - he's my third child, companion, and protector. He has a lot of cool quirks (like if my phone keeps going off late at night, he will either growl/grumble at it, or just get up and take it to another room!

My boy and your's could pass for twins. Mine just has slightly more white on him than your's.  I had to laugh at the orange collar in the pics. Most of my pics of Coop have that same orange collar. It's a great training tool! All I have to do is beep it and he comes running back.

I will say that is so true!
We had a very mean Angus bull that needed to go to the sale barn last summer.   We got him out of the cows and all the way home from the pasture but there wasn't any way he was going on the trailer without a fight.  He was all about running over anyone and anything and he weighed over a ton, so very dangerous.
Brett stood behind the crowd tub gate and I stood along the trailer gate to slide it shut in case we got him loaded.
The dogs took care of that.  One was on his head and one was on his heels.  He was getting chewed on from both ends.  He didn't know what to do so he ran right onto the trailer.  We got him to town and got him sold.
Later that night my nieces/nephews were here at our place playing with the dogs, pulling on their ears, sitting on them, ect.
Just because a dog can load a mean bull or catch a hog doesn't mean they won't make a good pet.
I would not have one that could not do both.

We have and have had several that are primarily working dogs (cows/wild hogs, etc.) but are still good around people and my 3 year old monster boy child. If they start to show people aggression they get tuned on a little and taught that is not ok. We have a cat/border collie (I know, strange cross) that is the most vicious working dog when it comes to a fighting cow or hog but will let kids maul him. My son hugs, squeezes, kisses, pulls around on, and wrestles him every single day and he just tolerates it. He is quite possible the smartest dog I have ever know in my lifetime. I have never known one who had an on/off switch like that. He is the only one who stays in the house and is treated like a family dog. The others stay at the barn, probably to hide from my son. lol

They are great dogs.
