After the treatment she urinated 2 times at the trailer while my gelding was being done, and again in the trailer on the way home, then I found 4 fresh spots in her pen the next morning also. May have to add this t her routine all the time. Also need to do some asking around for some insight on this part. I found some info on essential oils, 2 of them that were recommended were Lemon and Frankinscense (sp)..applied that how it was prescribed. The lemon oil she was fine with, however the frankinsense she wanted OFF of her. Took about 3 minutes, I had applied it, went up the hill and fed the cat and I see CC turning around and biting at her side...but only at the spot that the Frankinsense was applied, she did it repeatedly and I could tell was very frustrated. So I went down and applied some water to the spot. She quit biting at her side but then I see her pawing and pulling at her bell boots, I had applied it to an area there also. Took her hoof oil and applied it to dilute the area also and she quit and went back to eating.. Did you add a carrier oil such as coconut oil to the essential oils or did you apply them neat? Also did you let her smell them before using them? I have just started using essential oils lately myself.
Yes you need an oil as a carrier. I order the V6 oil from Candace for my carrier but you can use olive oil or even canola oil. I take the lemon oil orally with my Ninja Red and can see why your mare thought it was hot. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | I use both orally diluted in water... thought the first time I used the lemon oil I massaged it in with Jojaba (sp) oil but decided to use it orally also due to the sun reactions that I've read about, didn't want to cause a sunburn on her. I have to be careful not to get it on her lips even diluted...did that one day and she got a sunburn on the side of her mouth.
And yes, offered them to her and she tried to take the bottles out of my hand, especially the Zendrocrine.
It wasn't the lemon she reacted to, it was the Frankesense (sp)...the lemon I decided to use orally diluted in water and the Frankensense I just decided not to use for now.

Location: 31 lengths farms | Thank you GLP, I've kind of used this as a blog I guess of sorts so updates will be coming whether people are sick of hearing about our journey or not :-) This way I have a journal of sorts to go back and look at what and when we started this process, what seemed to be working, what maybe didn't, etc. and hopefully someone that someday has the same issue gets some help from it instead of basically having to start from scratch in a panic like I did. Hopefully one day I can post a video of her first run back too. If not that at least a video or a picture of her at 20 terrorizing turkeys in our lower pasture. This was taken last week, even with her fly mask on you can see the sass in her eye....

Location: 31 lengths farms | Went and had CC bioscanned again on Saturday seeing as last time I had found 4 fresh urine spots in her pen after having it done where usually there are 2 small spots. When she was finished I led her back to the trailer, grabbed the gelding to be adjusted and then bioscanned also, by the time I made it back over to where the woman was set up to adjust CC urinated and urinated again in the trailer on the way home. Got home about 3 o'clock, rode everyone that evening, CC included and when she urinated she didn't pass any blood, and found 6 fresh spots in her pen the next morning. Bioscan has officially been put on her list of therapies.
I also spoke to the herbalist about her reaction to the Frankensense, her feeling was that if CC smelled it and wanted it but then reacted to it the way she did, biting at her sides and pulling at her over reach boots that she felt that meant it was working and she needed it. She told me to try a different carrier oil or dilute it more with the carrier oil. I used Jojabo oil the first time as it was blended with Jojabo oil already. We will give that another go and have water available just in case.
She has not passed any blood in her urine after being ridden since I went back to syringing the herbs to her after the one incident about a month and a half in to starting her herbs when I had started just putting them over her hay and caught her flipping the flake over. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | I have been doing most of my everyday riding in a treeless saddle for the last few years, I run in a treed saddle, but do the majority of conditioning in the treeless as my big mare was having some issues related to saddle fit and it was just easier to toss the treeless on everyone when not at a race. Anyway, I had noticed that CC was a little fidgety when loping the last few weeks. I know I can feel them better in the treeless so I got to thinking, if I can feel her ribs and back better, wouldn't that mean she can feel me also? Maybe the pressure of my seat isn't welcomed right now with what she has going on. So Saturday I switched and rode her in the saddle I normally run her in and the fidgety stuff was gone, her lope departures and circles were smooth as were her lead changes.
This little mare just makes my heart warm, she comes to meet me at the gate, takes her meds, puts her nose in the halter and then marches me to the trailer to get saddled. She still loves her ride time, I pray I have years and years to enjoy those moments with her. |

Location: CA | I haven't been on this site in some time. Life has taken me in many directions at once. My mare was just diagnosed with kidney stones, no blood in the urine, but sore and has trouble uninating. I am a Reiki healer and I do essential oils and aroma therapy. I have been working on her, and she has slowed down the drinking and constant urinating. I will ride her today, as I ahve been off her for a couple of weeks. She too has the shelly hooves, and is hard to keep weight on. I feel it is an adrenaline thing as she is a nervous horse so I have done what I can to keep her calm. One thing you might look into is Kombucha. It will help with the PH balance, much like ACV. If you can find someone with a scoby to make your own it is quite inexpensive. If you are anywhere near Grass Valley, I have a few extra. Thank you for this diary, I have learned so much. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Im in Red Bluff...REiki healer was also recommended by a friend but I googled it and at that time the closest I could find was below the Bay Area...what may I ask is a Scoby?
And as far as Kombucha, I just looked it up, looks like there is a million different types, do you recommend one?
CC also has a bladder stone which is where the blood comes from or did...that is how we found out about the kidney stones. She also is a nervous high strung mare. She has never carried any extra weight but thankfully I haven't had an issue keeping her weight near normal for her thankfully.
I'm sorry to hear about you mare but at the same time I'm so excited to find another person dealing with this too, hope you dont' mind me bouncing ideas off of you....
Edited, just actually read the Kombucha and see Scoby is an acronym :-)

Location: CA | Life is pretty funny sometimes. I was supposed to go to Red Bluff to look at a couple of horses today, but it didn't work out. Are you running at Lincoln on the 23rd? I will be there and would be happy to give you a SCOBY and a recipe for Kombucha....and I would be honored to work on your horse. :) It is quite possible we know each other .. lol |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Hadn't planned on it, this is my barrel horse :-/ My gelding stands in for her at times much to his dismay so I try to keep him in outdoor open pens for the most part as I tend to leave him alone a bit more outside. Let me look at my schedule however and see what I can do. I'd love to talk to you more about treatments and options and your take on essential oils also. Feel like a drowning person that just saw a life vest :-) |

Location: CA | I just went on a trail ride and my mare didn't urinate after, I also noticed she is drinking less water. She doesn't have as much back pain either. I have been "working" on her and I had put her on an anti-inflammitory for 3 days to kind of give her a break and hope some of the internal swelling would go down. It seems to have helped. I just used one bute once a day. I hope things are going better for you too. :) |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Last week was a little harder on her, she was in heat and was a little miserable for a few days, not mopey or lethargic but just constantly doing the mare thing, tail in the air. Had her Bioscanned on Friday and she actually urinated while she was being treated, couldn't even wait till she was done, LOL!!! We had to go out of town for a wedding shower and the horses had to stay in their pens for the two days, large pens, but pens all the same. CC was more than a little anxious to get the heck out of hers come Monday morning. I had taken my big mare down to her end of the pasture, closed the gate and was swallowed by dust, turned around and CC couldn't be seen for the dust devil she had created running and bucking and rearing in her pen, guess I was taking too long for her. I decided to skip the act of giving her her herbs via the syringe as she was not in the mood to stand still, she wanted out and she wanted out NOW. Opened her gate and she grabbed a few gears headed down the pasture, did her sideways slide stop change directions belly roll jump thing she is so proficient at and made a few laps of the pasture before she finally settled in to graze. Thankfully she had a full 10 hours of chasing butterflies and turkeys and whatever else might catch her attention before I got home to ride that night and we had a good session together. It is starting to cool off a bit in the evenings so hoping to be able to start doing just a bit more with her, haven't wanted to stress her system any more than it is. |

Location: Home....Smiling M Farms | I have to say, I'm surprised no one has asked you to try to catch a stone. Stone chemical composition tells you why you have stones, whether it be diet or drug related or otherwise. Also, in knowing where they come from you can prevent them from coming back. If it's a diet related stone, you change the diet. :)
The blood that you see means a stone is moving. Whether it is moving within the kidney or actually in the ureter is the tricky part. Can't know that without an ultrasound. Once they are in the bladder, no more blood, unless it's just residual.
How old is your mare? Did you or do you feed sweet feed? Alfalfa? Sooooo glad to hear you've got her on uva ursi, that stuff is awesome!
When you first went, was your mare completely blocked on one side? Sorry, just read all 4 pages and I can't remember. That would explain the clear urine, kidney not being able to properly filter and kick back out the toxins at the time. Do you know your mare's BUN and creatinine level originally? |
