Location: So. Cali. | 7 Days in the hospital, and the 1st one of me leaving there with tears of joy. Cowboy was much more perky last night. He was on a 1/4 of the amount of fluids than he's been on and still holding a good hydration level. As of today they were going to stop antibiotics and continue decreasing his fluids inhopes to prep him to come home!!! His appetite is much better as well!!

Location: So. Cali. | He's home!!!!!!!! He isnt 100% out of the clear yet, but he is home and thats a HUGE step. Cowboy was not only hospitalized for colitis, but he was also battling salmonella, believed to have caused the colitis. He has to remain on quarantine for atleast 2 months while we continue to test him until he tests negative. |

Yeah isn't it 5 consecutive negative tests before they are considered over it? at least in TX thats what it is. they shed intermittently which is why you have to have a series of negatives. |

Salmonella is everywhere, there's a gazillion reasons why horses can get it.. just being a horse in general puts them at risk. |

I've been really lucky and have never had to deal with something like that. And I have had horses for almost 40 years.. OK now knock on wood |

Location: So. Cali. | Just wanted to post an update on Cowboy.
He's going on day 12 of being home. We had to have our local vet come back by last week as his stool was getting a bit looser than comfort for us. Gave him some more bio-sponge and put him on another round of antibiotics. That has thankfully been his only 'bad' day. He's still getting around a bit slow, he wasnt sound to begin with and I know standing in that stall for 9 days was hard on him so this is expected. His edema has gone and you can now see the toll fighting this illness has taken on his body score. However, we have him on a good diet and I know it he will look as good as new again. I am just thankfully he got to come home.
