| Vickie - 2014-05-29 11:52 AM Personally I am a true has-been, been there, won that, got the buckles to prove it. And I am proud to be an old has-been rather than a never-been. LOL
I'm right there with ya on this one. I have always said it is better to be an "has been then a never been"! No one can take away the saddles, buckles and wins that I have from my past. I was very lucky to have the horses that I did at a time in m life that I could really Use them. Now days I have my eyes set on different things. |

It doesn't bother me when people claim to be barrel racers... fake it till you make it, but holy god don't claim to be an expert when all you win is gymkhanas! >.< Any idiot with a 4D horse can do that.
Pretty ignorant comment.
I don't rodeo for obvious reasons, but I am pretty serious about racing. My daughter and I do run at most of the jackpots in our area and do pretty well, but honestly I enjoy going to local gymkhanas more. I want to keep racing fun for my daughter and running for money all the time can be a bit stressful so we go to the fun show where she can just ride and have fun.
That said most jackpot runners have a hard enough time running poles much less any other event, sure your 4D rider might do well in barrels but would get their butt handed to them in any of the other events. I enjoy running other events and think it helps keep my horse focused on listening to me rather than just eating barrels on her own.
Just because someone does not run rodeo or jackpots does not mean they are some yahoo that is ignorant of how to barrel race or inferior in ability to those who do. I really enjoy and most weeks would rather run for a silly trophy, but when we do run the big jackpots we usually run half a second off the fastest jackpot riders in MI.
So you should really not look down you nose at those of us who choose a different venue to race. |

Location: NM | I don't particularly like being called an idiot. More over, who are you to be calling people like me idiots??? I've not run for many years. I'm doing it now. That's the key. I'm getting out there and doing it. I have no aspirations of going down the rodeo road. I'm quite content going to jackpots. Call me an idiot if you will. I'll keep my opinion of you to myself. |

As a past hunter, this made me lol so hard.
But! I do know what George Morris would say to all this sillyness: "all of you shut up.... And then something surly and profound about nobody being better than anybody, only harder working."

Location: Indiana | I always go back to "When you know better, you do better." People want to fit in and be part of something. I had a lot to learn and will always have more to learn. The last few years I haven't gone as much because we are hauling the kids and running a business, but I still think of myself as a barrel racer. (Although I'm starting to think I'm a "Once was" if I don't enter something soon). I say don't let it get to you, they want to be part of something and maybe it's all they can do to just dream the dream. There's room for everyone in barrel racing, we need fans to cheer us on, people to promote the sport, professionals to give us something to shoot for, and even some space for the "Once Was"ers who miss it and go as much as they can like me.

Location: North Dakota | I'll admit it, I am an armchair critique. But don't automatically hate on people that tend to be this way. I am not doing it to be nasty, or to make myself feel superior, or whatever. It's a habit ingrained in my being from the hundreds of horse shows I watched as a child, comparing my picks to the judge's. Also, regarding barrels specifically, my sister is new to barrel racing and if she's watching with me and I can pick out something that a rider does really well or poorly, then that's a visual aid for her.
I give every rider credit. I mean, they are the ones riding. They may have things to improve, but it's all part of the learning process and I'm certainly not going to look down on any rider, nor am I going to go up to them and tell them "hey, you should do x, y, and z. Trust me. I am really good at sitting in this chair." I'm not thinking in terms of "oh, well I could do it better". I don't compare myself. Whether or not I could, I'm the one in the chair. I've gone back to dressage anyway. |

| Haven't read the whole thread...but...
One of the things that drew me to barrel racing when my confidence over fences was gone and I was just riding what needed ridden and starting babies was the people. At the end of the day, if you ain't fast enough you ain't fast enough. The only thing you have to compete against is the clock, presuming you are an ethical and moral person there's not a darn thing you can do about who runs faster than you. As someone who was burned out on judged show pen events, it was like a new awakening.
Taking that element of judged competition away, I have a blast going to races. People are friendly, they're having fun, and a lot of them are willing to give you advice if you're struggling somewhere. I remember having a rough 2nd barrel one day and made a comment to my boyfriend that it kind of felt like he cross fired coming into it. A bit later another gal who had been in the drag came up to me, said no - he had a beautiful full lead change and gave me some advice about what she saw, after asking if I wanted any As a beginning racer, it was invaluable. In he hunter world people would have just talked behind my back...
I haven't been racing long. I haven't ran a ton of different horses. But I try to do it right. I have a good background and knowledge of a what a solid foundation a horse needs. I read a lot, I watch a lot of videos, and I lurked here before I was ever brave enough to throw in my 2 cents. It's been a journey with my current horse and I can't wait to be able to afford a second in a few years to make the journey with them.
I've always tried and prided myself on being the best horsewoman I can be and do the best by my animals.
Because of that what frustrates me the most is when I do go to a show or gymkhana and see terribly ill fitting tack, horses who clearly hate their job and many who scream for a Chiro or vet they appear so sore, being whipped and spurred around 3 cans. That makes me sick. Those are the people who give barrel racers a bad rap. |
