I am so sorry Bear had to leave you in such a tragic way. I'm glad you were able to spend time with him and say goodbye. I lost my once in a lifetime horse to a broken leg while running barrels as well, it was his front left leg at the knee. At least we know they'll be waiting on us to ride them in Heaven. Prayers for you and your family

So sorry for your loss

These words are too little to say, but I know I can't say anything that will make this easy or better.

I wish I knew you - I deem you a most fantastic man: one that can love "just a horse" like that, one that can express the love and the subsequent pain.  Some day those memories that are causing you tears now will bring you smiles.  Look forward to them.  The good ones never really leave us.  I send prayers for your comfort.

Now you've gone and made me cry, Scott. I'm so sorry. I have watched your story develop on BHW for years. I'm glad he was yours and you were his.

Thanks again, everyone, for the kind words. It helps a lot. Over the past 4 days I've recalled so many memories of our time together. I was lucky enough to enjoy Bear no matter what we were doing. Some of my most vivid memories were of the times when we just went out for a long walk in the woods, over the hills, and even in the lake. No matter how we did in the arena, I was always just proud to be on his back. He had a special kind of charisma and a kind of wisdom, like a wise old man.

This made me cry and breaks my heart for what you're going thru right now.  I'm so so very sorry.  I love all my horses, but every once in a great while,  you get one that's just so special they become your best friend.  Bear had a great life with you.  You're in my prayers.

Well goodness, I am trying to type through my tears trying to think of something appropriate to say.  Nothing comes to mind.  I am so sorry for your loss.  Thanks for sharing the pictures, what a wonderful team you both were.  Though this will be of no comfort right now, just know that through time you will think of memories with Bear and instead of sadness - you will smile thinking of the good times.

So very sorry for your loss! I can feel your heartbreak even through this computer screen! We can only love them and care for them as best we are able! It is easy to see Bear knew you loved him with all your being!

I am afraid I am facing the hard decision of putting my beloved "Casper" down sooner rather than later! It is killing me to have to think about it, but my love for him outshines my selfish desire to keep him with me just so I can see him everyday! I have had to make that decision before and it has never been easy, but this time it is tearing my heart out! I just love that little guy so very much! Scott, may our memories of these gentle creatures who give us so much and ask for so little, keep us going during the dark times! Much love to you, Bear, and Carol!!!

Looking back, it's kinda funny how I tried to hide my red eyes from the vet. I didn't care so much what the other people thought, because they were all bawling anyway, including the two men. The vet was a real nice guy (I forgot his name), and he did a good job of reassuring me that there wasn't a realistic chance of saving Bear. He tried to make small talk when he talked about "the great ones" who always seem to be the ones who meet this kind of end. As he was getting everything set up, I tried not I make eye contact with him, because I didn't want him to see my red eyes. He talked about his real good calf roping horse, and how Bear reminds him of his gelding. I eventually looked up and saw his eyes were a little wet as well. This guy probably spent two hours or more coming and going, but he wasted no time getting out to our place from Elgin. He charged us $200 for all that. Nice fella.....so it doesn't surprise me that he was a tad overcome himself.

Thank you everyone.  What a difficult day that was for everyone there.  Bear was an exceptional horse, not just in the barrel pen where he proved he was a star, but he was just a nice guy, period.  You had to watch him at barrel races because he could untie a knot with his lips faster than a human could with their hands.  As a matter of fact, the day of the accident when he was waiting his turn in the arena, he untied himself and took a stroll.  He had a presence about him that commanded attention, kinda like when Robert Redford walks into a room, I would imagine.

And Scott, you didn't hide anything from the vet and he didn't care.  I have to give a public thanks to Dr. Hebel of Elgin, TX.  He had been competing at a team roping when he got the call, loaded his horses, took them home and jumped in his pickup stocked with his vet supplies.  He was here faster than the vet in Bastrop who wanted more than twice as much (extortion on their part) and a cc number up front before they would bother themselves to come.  Dr. Hebel is a horseman and was very compassionate.  I am sure his eyes were wet, although I couldn't see them through my own tears.
