Cowboy was not only hospitalized for colitis, but he was also battling salmonella, believed to have caused the colitis. He has to remain on quarantine for atleast 2 months while we continue to test him until he tests negative. Yeah isn't it 5 consecutive negative tests before they are considered over it? at least in TX thats what it is. they shed intermittently which is why you have to have a series of negatives.
Sorry to just respond. The discharge paperwork the hospital sent me home with advises 3 negative tests. We were going to send in one after the first week, however because he had a 'bad' day, we decided to wait a bit longer.

Did you ever find out what cause all this yet? Salmonella is everywhere, there's a gazillion reasons why horses can get it.. just being a horse in general puts them at risk. I've been really lucky and have never had to deal with something like that. And I have had horses for almost 40 years..
OK now knock on wood
Yes, unforunately salmonella is everywhere. Prior to this experience I had no idea horses could even get it! It's only passed by fecal, but couldve come from rodent, bird, or another horse. Cowboy hasnt been to a race in months, I wouldve expected my colt to have gotten sick before him, but as always you just never know.
I am going to have my mare Tilly tested, she was stalled next to Cowboy and although she hasnt shown any symptoms, horses can be carries and never actually have a 'symptom' and since she is coming 8 months infoal I'd rather be safe and have some piece of mind.

Just wanted to post an update on Cowboy.
He's going on day 12 of being home. We had to have our local vet come back by last week as his stool was getting a bit looser than comfort for us. Gave him some more bio-sponge and put him on another round of antibiotics. That has thankfully been his only 'bad' day. He's still getting around a bit slow, he wasnt sound to begin with and I know standing in that stall for 9 days was hard on him so this is expected. His edema has gone and you can now see the toll fighting this illness has taken on his body score. However, we have him on a good diet and I know it he will look as good as new again. I am just thankfully he got to come home.

Considering what he has gone thru he looks pretty darn good, great care will do that :-) Hope he is continuing on his road to recovery with few speed bumps. |

Thank you!! Only hard for me to see him like that because he never has in all his years with me. BUT its defiantly only a mild aspect considering all he's fought thru. |
