Nevertooold - 2016-02-10 9:13 PM We just got home.

I would have loved to have seen Kelly win it. Wish she had more runs under her belt with Backdraft as she would have whupped Lyndsey IMO. Pretty hard to catch ride on 2 horses.

One of Lyndsey's horses ran out the back and evidentley doesn't have brakes and ran into her other horse.

I am sorry but I completly disagree- I've seen the Backdraft horse run for two years in AZ and he is 2d, 3d at best- not even a hand like Lindsay could bring him up further- Kelly did her best with what she was offered- and I think she is owed honors for making that horse look kinda good at best- go Kelly!  :$

His last run was a 15.8 plus 5... Lindsey's fast time was a 15.6... so if Lindsey is riding 1D horses and Backdraft is only a "3D at best", are you saying all the horses were running like sh#t last night? That it was a fluke? Maybe the rider you've been seeing run him in Arizona isn't a 1D rider, maybe she holds him back. I think you posting that was disgusting.

Well that's kind of a crummy thing to say when his owner is one of our very own BHW members...and obviously posting on this very thread...

I get that nobody loves every horse but to just put him down like that seems a little mean. Sonya has always seemed like a very nice lady.
I do not think the OP was being mean. Just stating the obvious. I would have loved to see Kelly go in there on a decent horse a really be able to ride. She did the best with what she had and I think made the horse look as good as anyone would have been able to. No discrediting the horse in no way. He just is not the caliber you would expect to see at a run off like this.

The mean spirited comments on a very good horse like Backdraft are just that...mean. Any horseman can see that the horse is talented, and has a great quick turn....just as it is hard for a rider to jump on any horse and make a smoking run, it is hard for the horse as well...to figure out it's rider.
Congrats to both Lindsay and Kelly for being good sports, and giving us some good watching...thumbs up to each horse, it would be a thrill to make a run on each one.
To those meanies on BHW who bash folks who mess up on barrel runs...who choose the "wrong" horse and on and on...they maybe need to stop and think that it is hurtful, mean. Seriously how would you feel if someone made snarky remarks about your horse?

I am really disappointed in the ladies on this thread that have made backhanded remarks about the caliber of horses that were ran last night. Whether you agree with the choices that Kelly made or not, she  picked horses she felt like she could succeed on, those horses were owned by people who obviously believe in them as well. If you do not know first hand information or are a part of the situation, find something nice to say or do not say anything at all. Making assumptions for the world to see makes you look like an ASS... Be the bigger person and just keep it to yourself.

Completely agree here! If he isn't the "caliber" of horse for this event his times wouldn't have been right there with Lindsey's...

He's also placed and won money in the 1D at multiple events. Not bad for a 3D horse on a good day. Wish my 3D horse would pull that off lol

The gray mare's name is Grace, she belongs to Alicia Spann who is one hell of a hand with a horse! So excited for her & Lindsey!

Can't we all just be nice. They ran what they ran, how ever it went just be happy for them that they got to run and we get to watch. I could win every round at the NFR from my seat in front of the TV, put me down in the arena, Different STORY. I am so tired of all the negativity, get happy and get a life.

I think the barrel race was a very good match.  For Kelly to jump on horses she has never ridden, after surgery, and ride within that close of times compared to Lindsay, who rode her own horses and to anyones knowledge hasn't taken time off--very impressive.   Dare we even consider that if she had a few more weeks to ride and get in shape, the winner could have been different?

And we all know that the rider makes a huge difference--I've watched a horse that could barely catch a 5D check outrun the entire field with a saddle change, different bit, and not to mention a rider change.  Every single one of us has seen that.

To have a horse that is great enough to be considered and especially selected by a World Champion to ride in an event like this--with all that pressure from not competing, coming back from medical time off, and the actual event---my hat is off to you and thank you for being willing to put your horse out there.

And remember, if they are cutting you down, it's only to make themselves feel better about their own horse.  Jealousy is a very ugly spectator.

You mean just because you saw him run "2D/3D times" on a huge STANDARD pattern in AZ means he is not a good enough for this level? Good grief. Ever think horses just do better in certain size pens?

If you wouldn't want to come on here and read a post from someone you don't know cutting your horse down - then you probably shouldn't do it either. It amazes me the things people will say without thinking.

I've seen this horse in Az too and I think he is an awesome horse. Not all horses like the pen where the Arizona races are held - South Buckeye. I had a horse that just would not run in that pen - ever - I could hustle and come running or I could sit there and enjoy the ride .. the result was the same. I quit running her there for that reason.

Horses are not machines. Just because the particular horse was running a certain time at 1 pen doesn't mean the horse isn't a pro level horse. There are horses that run better outdoors vs. indoors and vice versa. In looking at the times, it appears that this particular horse can run. SMH

Sonya is happy with how Backdraft did according to her post on FB. Kelly did not get any practice runs on him, just some slow work. I think they did great with the situation. He is a nice horse and is producing some nice horses.

Agree- Kelly did awesome with that horse- I was super impressed!
I personally have not seen Backdraft run in the 1d for the last two years here in AZ in a variety of pens- and I'm not saying that to be mean, it's just a fact and the results are online if anyone wants to see what I'm talking about. I personally would have thought Kelly would run a horse that had been running and winning currently, but it doesn't sound like she had a lot of time to choose a horse let alone get some runs on it before the match race. I also would have liked to see her champion winning smile on TV again! :)

She didn't say anything mean or degrading about Backdraft, just made some observations about how he's been running lately because she's seen him in person.

Everyone here was a past World Champion and since Charmayne dominated for 11 years, in the sport of barrel racing there aren't very many past World Champions that are still running. I've seen Kelly hauling her daughter but have not seen her personally run a horse for some time.

It was something different to watch and the Team Roping was the best to watch as many are still on top of their game and still running down the road.

sodapop - 2016-02-11 6:32 AM  I thought  it was advertised as 2 runs on 2 different  horses. Kelly ran 2 different  horses, but Lindsay ran 3 different  horses I am pretty sure. She ran a gray horse at the end that she only ran the one time. So technically Lindsay ran  one horse twice and two other horses once. Anyone  know anything about that? Is this just one more example of the American making it up as they go?
 Anyone know the answer?

That is what was stated and then all of a sudden they said they could ride one of the same horses or ride a third in the last set. They are great at making up rules as they go so I don't know exactly what happened or if Hemi got hurt when he ran into Moe so they let her ride a third.

I don't have a clue how many horses Lyndsey had with her as she was riding a sorrel horse around earlier in the day and it didn't look like Martha but I'm pretty sure she was there also.

As Hank&Tank (or vice versa) stated earlier. Lyndsey rode "Grace"  who was raised ad trained by Alicia Spann. So happy for them! Alicia is one of the very kindest, hard working, outgoing, humble Christian gals I have ever known. She and Lyndsey are very good friends.  Couldn't have happened to a better team!!!! Congrats Grace!!!
