It was Gail Shanahan and Maggie Green. I don't know if they were BHW members. They lost their lives in the bridge collapse over the Arkansas River. |

AQHA MOURNS LOSS OF TWO MEMBERS, FOUR HORSES IN ARKANSAS RIVER BRIDGE ACCIDENT
The American Quarter Horse Association today mourns the loss of Gail Shanahan and Maggie Green, two victims of the Arkansas River bridge accident that occurred Sunday, May 26, 2002.
According to news reports, Shanahan and Green were returning to their Texas homes from the Old Fort Days Barrel Futurity and Super Derby in Fort Smith, Ark., after a successful weekend at the show.
In the early hours of Sunday, May 26, 2002, a 500-foot section of the bridge on Interstate 40, near Webbers Falls, Okla., collapsed into the Arkansas River, after a barge hit the bridge. Numerous cars, trucks, tractor-trailers, one motor home and the Kay Blandford horse trailer carrying four American Quarter Horses plunged into the water.
Several of the automobiles, including the horse trailer, were recovered Tuesday. Only three horses have been recovered, including a five-year-old sorrel American Quarter Horse mare, EARLY TRAIN, owned by Blandford.
Shanahan and Green are the only two victims who have been confirmed. Friends who also were returning from the Futurity witnessed the accident-giving the media a personal aspect to the breaking news story.
Forty-nine-year-old Shanahan, an AQHA Member since 1989, was awarded a 10-year Cumulative Breeder Award in 1999. Her four-year-old American Quarter Horse, ECSTASY INTHE DECK, claimed 13th place at the Old Fort Days Futurity Finals with a time of 17.461 seconds and earned an estimated $7,000. Kay Blandford, who stayed behind in Fort Smith to continue in the competition, rode ECSTASY.
Shanahan was heading home to meet her fiancé, Hershel Goodman, in Stockdale, Texas. Gail is the daughter of Lonnie Madison Cardwell, deceased, and Jeanne Dolores Barlow Cardwell.
Sunday was Margaret (Maggie) Green's 47th birthday. Green, an AQHA Life Member, had been married for more than 30 years to her childhood sweetheart, Ray. Green was an avid horse racing fan, running American Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds at racetracks in her hometown of San Antonio and the South Texas region.

Location: LuluLand~along I64 Indiana | Christmas Day 2017 HWH, Lorena Roberts got her angel wings. At 54 after fighting cancer for several years she lost the battle. HWH was one of the first that i remember we did a hat drive for shortly after her diagnosis and she recieved hats from all over just because. No names... we just sent hats. She was married for 34 years, and her sign on here was the brand her husbands grandad used. RIP Lorena.

Location: LuluLand~along I64 Indiana | Gwen Rachel Hornbaker-Cheney, known to us here as Nothome-gone racin, 41, left this life for her eternal home September 12th 2018. She was a formidable foe for cancer but alas it cut down a giant force. She was loved and admired by many. Described as a unicorn among sorrels. Gwen left us with a tag line in her signature that showed the strength of her fight.... "FU cancer and the breast you rode in on." RIP Nothome, your BHW family will miss you too.

He didn’t post a lot on BHW but when he did, it was sage and down to earth advice from an old timer that had been there and done that. My sons had the pleasure to have learned from him as youngsters. He was always willing to help the young kids.
I used to tease him that his wife roped better than he did. They were quite the combo.

RIP Maui Cowgirl... you fought the good fight... in the end you taught us what tuff reallyΒ is... 7-19-13 lost to cancer Β
Here is a picture of Theresa Brasier (Maui Cowgirl) at the NBHA World Show shortly before she was diagnosed. I was glad I was able to help her with her lifelong dream of competing at Worlds by loaning her my horse, Buzz, to ride. She won a buckle and made the finals. :)

Location: Southeast Louisiana | Bigfoot was Troy Goode. He was a second cousin of mine. We'd never met or spoken til I recognized his name here on barrel horse world. The Internet has its ups and downs, but this was one of the good points of being able to reach out far and wide. He was an ag teacher and his kids rodeod.
