I have a mare that rates hard - I carry a hand whip and tap her until shoulder clears the barrel then I "quickly" grab my horn on the backside
I would stay off barrels at home - set up cones and practice turning cones at random areas in the arena to work on your body
position and your hands and teach your horse not to drop until you tell her to.
If she is patterned on the barrels there is no sense in doing a lot of "barrel" work
Set up poles and stakes and quads - track some cows and get her to open up

Ok sorry for disappearing on everyone as they were posting great suggestions. I left yesterday afternoon to hit an open arena time in the evening and didn't start the computer back up until now.
On my way to the arena, I realized that Clifford works great when I just sit there and cruise him through, so I tried that in the arena and am pretty sure I might be on to something. Apparently kicking, whipping, leaning, driving him or otherwise doing anything but switching hands between barrels and holding on is overkill. He smoked a run when I literally tried to do nothing. Go figure - the ratiest horse is the one who needs a passenger not a driver. Now I'm actually kind of excited about running this weekend!
