I did use a 5 Star for a while and liked it.  The I bought a CSI and use it all the time now.

I use an Ortho Equine saddle pad with mine and it fits the best on my horse. I have a Wade pad and don't like it as much with that saddle.

We use the 5 Star's under the Crown C's.  With them being in different thicknesses, you can get the one that compliments the fit of the saddle, and if you have to shim, the shims work well w/the 5 Star.

I have a 3/4" Tod Slone pad and a 1/2" 5 Star pad. I mainly use the Tod Slone because the 3/4" thickness works better for my saddle fit, but they are both very nice felt pads.

I have a Zone pad under mine and love it!  I've never had a 5 Star so I can't speak to that.

I honestly think it depends on your saddle fit and your horse.  I went through 8 pads on my hard to fit mare, trying different shims etc. and found the Wade pad to work best.  It was extremely frustrating, but now I'm really happy with my set up.  I felt like the Goldilocks of saddle pads...this one's too thick, this one's too thin, this one needs a shim, lol.  Good luck!

Brian from Martin suggest you use a 5 star or a Tod Slone. I have both and I am very happy. My Tod Slone's are thicker and my 5 star is thinner so I can switch it out for whichever horse and saddle.

It's funny how they always seem to switch like that..

Imo saddle pads are a personal decision just like what saddle you ride in. If you have a perfect fitting saddle than a thin pad would fit best, the thicker the pad the more it will interfere with how the saddle fits.

Agree with you! Every horse's back is different and every saddle sits a little differently. My horse hated the Impact Gel pad with her Crown C.
