Location: AB | What are peoples experiences with this:
I have a 6 year old gelding who has, over the past month, has started to bring my mares into heat (in cold snowy December in Canada for god sakes) and he is actually breeding them! He started with one mare.. I moved her out right away obviously, and things seemd good but now I notice that he has brought the other mare into heat and is breeding her. (I had horses sorted bassed on feeding needs as opposed to gender groups but now that is going to have to change until I figure out why he is doing this)
So I am going to get some blood work done right away to test for stallion levels of testosterone in case he is a cryptorchid.
I had the gelding out in a 7 horse herd in a big field grazing all summer and he wasnt breeding anyone then.. I noticed that after I took out the lead gelding from that herd that his behavior changed as he tried to establish himself as the boss...
So my questions are:
1) has anyone had a true gelding (not cryptorchid) that actually bred mares? (as in mounting and actual penetration!)???
2) I'm wondering if some geldings just take being the herd leader too far (especially when there are no other geldings to challange them)??

Location: Eastern OH but my heart is in WV | Years ago we had a palomino gelding that liked to "breed" everything, including the other gelding from time to time. I was much younger at the time, but I pretty sure there was penetration.

| I have a friend who says that some of her geldings out with her pasture horses breed the mares. My brother had a gelding that would breed an OLD mare on occasion. He was cut at about 8 years old and I think he never forgot the behavior. |

Location: SE Louisiana | I've seen lots of geldings that would cover a mare.... A lot of times the mares would pester them into it. |

| My gelding is proud cut, gelded at 9 years old and will cover anything that will let him. He's not gifted enough to get it in though. lol No clue how they got him to breed, he doesn't have much in that department. (If you know what I mean) |

Location: Oklahoma | How long have you owned this gelding? Is he a barrel horse? Any chance he could have been given Equipoise before you owned him? If he had, that may make him act like a stallion. I had one that a vet gave a shot of Equipoise to.....didn't tell me what it was....just said it would make him fire and run harder in the barrels. Took him home and a couple of days later he was trying to breed everything on the place!! I called the vet to ask her what she gave him and when she told me, I was livid. I thought she was giving him a vitamin shot or something....not an anabolic steroid!!! Now I always ask what they're giving my horse BEFORE they give it!!! Anyway, he NEVER quit acting like a stud till the day he died. Would smell poop and then pee on it, squeal and strike when he smelled noses, etc...and he only had ONE SHOT. So if I was guessing, I'd say that's probably what caused it. A lot of horses that go to the track have had it.

Location: AB | Huh... Intersting stuff guys, thanks! I have had this guy since he was 2 and no he has never had an injection of anything... He has never been a typical easy docile gelding but I always attributed his rankness to his heavy to Peppy San Badger bloodlines lol... I've always thought he had some slighlty pronounced stallion like features, like muscley jowls and over muscular neck. I sent a message to the girl who bred him to see if she can remember actually seeing two testicles when he was castrated. My work is not done!

Are the mares under any artificial light at all? Like in a barn with lights on after dark? |

| Yup sure have, actually had 3 very annoying behavior. That's why geldings don't live here anymore and if they do they have their own pasture |
