I have a streakin six/ dash for cash gelding and he is very sweet and would never hurt anyone. But at shows he will run fine for a few classes but then all of a sudden it's like he loses concentration, he won't listen, acts like he never ran barrels before etc. I lope him for a long time while warming him up because it seems like the longer time he has for warming up the better he listens. Any advice on how to get him to focus more?

Animal Element In the Zone paste
All natural.  When I use I will give 20-25 cc's about 1 hour out and lasts about 4 hours in system..

Depending on horse I have dosed when I loaded on trailer to leave for jp and have also given another dose at arrival...  wont take the run out and keeps them eating and drinking etc...

If longer warmup time is not making him better then shorten your time. In whatever you do with him make him have crisp sharp movements, without tipping him over the edge. He needs to be confident in your hands. If you feel his mind wondering put him up to a task. I do this with my two ADHD horses and when I'm breaking colts that have a lot of spook to them. Force their attention onto a task and not the paperbag flying across the path in which your taking. I will make one figure 8 or do haunches in etc. with precision.

How many times do you run him at one show? Sounds like hes getting tired.

I love my Oxy-Zen paste! takes any anxiety out of them. Really makes my nervous hot horse pay attention. Still very alert but so much more focused.

I have to concur that I love the focus that the Zen tends to give one! I don't find that it "calms" one per se, simply allows them to be more "dialed in".

Yes! I have a horse that was having alley issues (not terrible) but would bulk if another horse came running out while you were making your way up. Also he was a huge handful to warm up just hot and could not get his attention. Ever since the first dose I gave him I can warm him up (and he is perfect!) then walk for awhile go stand next to the alley and he has not even tried to bulk since. He might still prance for a second on the way to the alley and after his run, but the difference is unbelievable. I really think he was getting anxiety. He is a fragile minded horse to begin with. It just takes the edge off. Love it! It is pricey tho.

I have a horse that needed a lot of warm up time. Took him off any and all sugars in his feed. No molasses, no corn, no grains that produced grains. We now have "normal" warm up sessions. Have started hauling another horse with him. He gets a tad buddy sour and have started back on his calming cookies. (he does fine when I am riding him, gets p*ssy when I am riding the mare.

It could be that he is getting bored and/or sore and acting out. Like Southtxponygirl said the longer warm up also probably tires him out which probably takes the edge off. Is he conditioned enough, or does he get really winded? Aside from vetting/chiro and stretching, I would recommend lots of trail riding and working outside the arena. Cross training can also benefit if he is getting bored with his job.

Agreed. It would be helpful to know how many events he's doing. AND How many are repeated!

If you are running, Practice barrels, Novice barrels and then Open barrels, He's probably sick of barrels by the third (or more depending on practice) time!  I know my horses would be!

I have a streakin six/ dash for cash gelding. He is a great horse but you are correct the concentration isnt there. I bought him when he was 4 and he is now 6. He was a little spooky and got bored with the same routine. Now that he is older he is more dialed in with the pattern and his concentration is alot better. I really think its the breeding....... Ive been told by alot of people and trainers that a horse with this kind of breeding takes awhile to mentally mature.
