Can someone tell me the perks of having a major medical policy on a young horse? What does it cover and when do you use it?

I have had it for years and I have had to use it twice. Well worth the extra $$. The thing is after a claim make sure you never let your policy lapse not even by a day because you don't want them to exclude what they covered before. And when you are dealing in the thousands for claims it was worth it to us.

A major medical policy has covered my butt on numerous occasions. It essentially covers anything that is not routine. Mine covered an endoscopic exam, a course of UlcerGard, numerous blood panels, a leg injury that required minor surgery, etc.

I have had it on 2 and both times the injury wasn't something surgery could help so I paid in a lot of money to end up with nothing.
First was my stud that had an old knee injury. We were hoping it was a chip that needed removed, but ended up being bone on bone.

My 6yr old was diagnosed with a previous broken pelvis. We were thinking OCD or something of that nature in the hock/stifle area since he was back sore after a run.

I do have it on my show horse, because why stop now. That way when he gets hurt, I can guarantee it will be a career ending injury

Sorry it has been an OVERLY bad year for me and my horses. I threw my sucker in the dirt a long time ago.

My boss has hunt seat horses and she carries insurance on everything on her place. Including major medical everytime she has made a claim they exclude that part of the horse lol pretty ridiculous I think.

Thanks guys. So basically it works kind of like health insurance but instead of covering regular care it reimburses you if you have any major medical expenses that aren't normal. I am getting mortallity on both of these horses for sure. I was just wondering if major medical is worth it.

One horse is just a weanling the other is a mare I'm going to start running next spring.

I went thru Excalibur, and insured my DTF horse that im running. I only insured because we got an offer on him at the BBR finals. I bought him track broke. 2 days after i insured him, he came down with basically the Oklahoma Fair Crud, sicker than sick for 4 weeks, had 3 different virus. He has ultrasounds, gutteral pouch wash, etc. Over 1300 bucks. Well we just went to insure our DTF stallion prospect, and noticed that i had major medical on the one im running...Now its what 8 months later, and they were wonderful about still paying the bills on him! So for 550 bucks, it paid for me!!

I'm actually really interested in this topic, too. Thanks for posting! To those who are answering, please post the insurance agency, if you don't mind.

thanks!

We only apply MM on horses that we are hauling. But yes, very worth it for us a few different times. Yes, they will put an exclusion on the area you claimed- say for instance a stifle. But you can appeal it after like a year. I think the benefit far out weighs the expense. For instance- I had a horse that was sore in his stifles. Xray was clean. We injected. Better for a while, then sore again. Injected again. Only lasted about a month. He was not very lame- say a 1 or 2 on the scale but he would not work and should not be sore at all given that he had no evidence of boney or soft tissue injury. Vet recommended scoping the stifles. Sure enough- he had torn meniscus. They cleaned it up and did stem cells- cost was about $5k or maybe $6500 total .And his prognosis is very good. It was over 2 years ago- and he hasnt needed injected since.

Has anyone ever tried to get an insurance company to pay for IRAP? What is their guidelines for if the horse needs it or can just get regular injections to help the problem?

I have not tried IRAP. I am guessing it would be covered but regular injections are never covered. My stem cells were covered. It would depend on the medical history and vet suggestion and then reviewed by the insurance adjuster.

any insurance companies that allow polices to be paid monthly? I'd like it the same way as my truck/trailer insurance.

I just wonder because technically you can usually just inject instead of IRAP. But if I would rather IRAP instead of inject I'm sure the only way the insure would cover it is if the vet said the horse was not a candidate for regular injections

I have MM on my 2 year old filly.  I had her insured for 3 days when she got kicked in the shoulder and broke her elbow.  Insurance company covered all surgery/diagnostic/follow ups ($5,600 less my deductible of $300). Of course the insurance company investigated to make sure it wasnt an old injury (I completely expected this)... But, they were very helpful and my adjustor was great! They even paid the vet directly so I didnt have to pay the bills first.
