There is an article on barn fires, THE HORSE.

Expounding on barn fires, what the heck is it with people that smoke in barns? Last weekend, at a local big barrel race, a guy was smoking in the barn. I asked him if he always smoked in barns,,,,, yep, he says. I told him barn fires are not cool. Next time I see him in the barn he hides his cigarette.
I wish they would post no smokeing in these barns!!! Some people have no sense

Β A few summers ago we had a major drought here in Texas. Β  Summer pastures were a brown crisp. I had 200 bales of hay delivered, paid the guys to stack it in my barn. Β  A few hours a later I was pulling in from running errands and notice small flames starting up right behind my barn. Β  I grab a bucket and douse the flames. Β I found a charred area about 3x3 with a cigarette in the middle of it. Β I guess it had been smoldering and just caught fire when I saw it. Β One of the yahoos delivering hay threw the cigarette there. Β Stupid people.

I'm a smoker and I would never even THINK about doing it (smoking) in a barn. I don't even smoke when I have a horse in hand..

They do put "No Smoking" signs in those big barns and they are usually fairly close to the "All Dogs Must Be on a Leash" sign...both signs are ignored by people  who are going to do what they want regardless of rules/regulations.  I see people smoking in the barns all the time...at NBHA World, at State etc.  It makes me nervous just like it makes me nervous when I see people smoking at the gas pumps at gas station!

One time at a gas pump, I told a guy to put out his cigaret. He thumped it up the hill and it came rolling down to the pumps. Stupid stupid stupid

They only post signs for the people who follow them to read. It is always the people who smoke that never see these signs. Scares the crap our of me to be in barns with people smoking and hay all around.

I don't smoke in a barn the sameway i wouldn't smoke in someones house. Its just rude and disprespectful...  But those of you worried about a cigarette catching a barn of fire really should pay closer attention to the overloaded outlets, bad wiring, heat lamps and dirty fans that are everywhere  because they are more likely to cause a fire then someone walking thru a barn with a cigarette.. (not that I condone that either) Its really more difficult to catch something on fire with a cigarette then most people think.

Twenty years ago when my husband had cleared land around a house and sloped to the bulkhead to the water. He always had straw in the little shed we where out so he sent the guys to get 100 bales and put in shed. He told the guys no smoking, of course they did not listen. I get a call on the radio from the guys to tell me that the rollback or flatbed was on fire. Of course we had a fire extingishers they started putting fire out and my husband was two minutes away and had a couple more fire extingishers and got fire out. Of,course they denied smoking. Overloaded circuits, smoking anywhere, waste from woodstoves, chimmney can cause fires, and smoking in any barn is just stupid. I caught some guy walking down the isle at nbha world, could not believe.

Quite a few years ago now I was at a 3 day barrel race where like many places the stalls and indoor were in one huge building.  I walked by a very well known couple sitting on chairs by their horse stalls smoking.  I lost a lot of respect for them that  day.  I also got up many times during the night to check the barn, I had myself so worked up imagining the worst.

Smoking is a habit and many Smokers do not even think twice about their location when they light up.  It is rude. I am not saying all smokers but enough of them to make it seem that way. My dad was a horrible smoker and although he would not smoke in My house he would smoke right outside the door and in my barn when I was not around. I finally told him if I found 1 more cirgarette butt on my place he would not be welcome. Even that did not stop him.  When I found out that he believed that if he rolled down the window in the truck while driving it was OK to smoke with the kids in the truck he was not allowed to take the kids anywhere.  He even believes his smoking has nothing to do with the fact that my mom and I have issues with our breathing.  He just never believed he was harming anyone with his smoking - not even himself.  So Sad - they are like an alcoholic -they just can not see it.
